Game Wrap 9/28/2022: Giants 6 Rockies 3

Joc Pederson keyed the offense as the Giants won a bullpen game.

Joc Pederson RF- 2 for 3, 3B, BB.  BA= .272.  Joc is thriving in the leadoff spot.  He is batting .385 over his last 7 games and .345 over his last 30.  I know what Joc is playing for:  The value of his next contract goes up a little bit with every game lately.  He says he wants to play in the postseason again.  We can hope he thinks that could be with the Giants because he sure seems to have found a home with the Giants.

John Brebbia RHP- 1 IP, 0 H,  0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.77.  9'th "Opening" for Brebbia and 9'th scoreless first inning.

Sean Hjelle RHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 9/0.  ERA= 7.20.  Here's why this was a great appearance by Hjelle:  The wheels could have easily come off in a bizarre first inning of work which involved a walk, WP and 2 consecutive errors on comebackers.  Instead he maintained his composure, got a GIDP to end the inning and went on pitch a solid 4 innings.  Hjelle is an extreme groundball pitcher and sometimes that approach is going to go sideways but in the long run it should enable him to be a solid #3 SP for a long time.

Shelby Miller RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  Miller is also pitching for a contract next season and his signing price just took a quantum leap due to his two appearances so far:  12 K's, 0 BB in 4.2 IP.  This might be working out great for Miller but it might be working against the Giants chances of re-signing him.

Jarlin Garcia LHP went on paternity leave and Sean Hjelle RHP was recalled from AAA Sacramento.

Carlos Rodon LHP goes for the sweep tomorrow evening against Ryan Feltner RHP.

Down on the Farm:  9/28/2022

AAA Sacramento River Cats shut down the Las Vegas Aviators 5-0.

Bryce Johnson CF- 2 for 4, 2B, 3B.  BA= .290.
Wei-Chieh Huang RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.40.

Final game of the season for the River Cats as well as for the minor league division of the Giants organization.  Bryce Johnson and Wei-Chieh Huang both had solid seasons for the River Cats.  Will they get another shot at MLB?

  1. With Hjelle joining Bart in the Big's with SF, the last pre-FZ 2018 draft becomes perhaps the best Giant draft (#'s 1 & 2) since the incomparable 2008 when Posey and Crawford were picked (75 bWAR between them and climbing).
If Jake Wong makes it as a Giant, the Top 3 picks in 2018 will be aboard (when did that last happen?), but, being Rule 5 eligible, unless he is added to the 40-man roster, he could be lost. Given he's still poking around in A+, would anyone want him?
Considering Posey and the late surge by the Giants winning 8 of their last 9 games to get to within 1 game of .500, how good might SF be if Buster hadn't opted out after his team best 2021 (BA)? Giants are only 6.5 games behind the Phillies for the #3 WC - would he have made that much difference?

    1. Is Hjelle showing enough that between him and Kyle Harrison FZ doesn't feel the need to resign Rodon or sign a high-priced replacement? Add Shelby Miller as 1-year, value-boosting agent signing, and I would think Shelby would jump at that opportunity, and that might be all they need to do on the pitching side this offseason.

    2. Do you think the Giants are talking extension with Rodon? Buy out 2023 and add a couple years? Would they offer him 3 years @, hmm, $25M, after he opts out?

    3. FZ has said Rodon has to make his opt out decision before they can discuss an extension so I would say no.

  2. What do the Giants not like about Bryce Johnson other than a lack of power?
True, he didn't impress much in his 9-game, 2 trips to the big leagues this year with 5 starts: 16-PA/1-R/1-H/1-RBI/1-W/7-K with 11 catches, 1 assist, and 0 errors, but is 45 innings enough to say he's can’t help?
4 of his games were against the Dodgers — no pressure there!
His 2 stints in the majors were separated by a month. He got his hit & walk in the 2nd game of the 2nd call-up, making him 1-4 & on base twice in 5 PA. before going to LA to start 2 against the Dodgers in September: He went 0-7 with 2 K, but threw a runner out at home when the Dodgers were mounting a rally down 3.
In the 2nd game he hit a line drive out to deep L-CF.
He's probably not the CF of the future but until one comes along, isn’t he the best they have? Or at least good enough to have a real trial? Wasn’t the dead end of a lost season a good time?
The Giants were 5-3 in the 8 games he appeared — .625 is the 3rd best winning PCT in the National League and it includes playing all or parts of 6 games against playoff bound LA & Philly.
    C’mon, man!

    1. I think the lack of power is a big deal for FZ and Kapler, and generally looking a but overwhelmed that the plate didn't help his case. FZ and Kapler have elevated "catching lightening in a bottle", as Sabes used to say, to a whole new level. If you get your shot, you better bring toonder.

    2. Defense up the middle, power at the 4 corners...
