Fantasy Focus: 2016 Impact Rookies- Corey Seager

OK, this will be a bit of a downer for us Giants fans, so let's get it out of the way early.  Corey Seager will likely go into the season as the #1 prospect in all of baseball and he's a Dodger.   A former first round draft pick, Seager has raked at every level in the minors.  He got a September callup last year and played a big part in the Dodgers stretch run.  He's listed as a SS and that's where he got most of his September PT, but he probably is more of a 3B in the long run.  He is 6'4", 215 lbs, B-L, T-R.  His line  in 113 MLB PA's:  .337/.425/.561, 4 HR, 12.4 BB%, 16.8 K%.  Steamer's projection for him in 2016 is a more modest .265/.315/.423, 16 HR, 5 SB in 579 PA.

He was a negative defender at SS in his MLB debut, which could improve with experience.  The Dodgers may also choose to move him to 3B right away which is probably his long term position.  For Fantasy purposes, he will have SS eligibility in 2016 and should be drafted in all leagues.

  1. Yes, it is a bummer. However, Logan White, the man mostly responsible for drafting/signing Seager, Urias, Kershaw, Kemp, Pederson and more is no longer with the Doyers. So, it is a big question mark how their drafting will be going forward. They can always just throw their money at every top rated International prospect and hope they hit the next big thing but that has not worked so far. Puig is a cancer in the locker room and on the field and Ryu has had injury issues. Olivera was signed to a huge contract last year and he is already out of the organization. It remains to be scene how all of the recent signings such as Alvarez, Diaz, etc will do. My unbiased opinion is that I like the future of the Giants more at this point. That all could change if the Giants really bomb this off-season but we still have a lot of payroll flexibility next year when Peavy, Pagan, Romo, Lopez and Blanco are potential free agents. That is another $44MM off the books assuming none of them are resigned. The future is looking bright if we can make a real splash this year and the next.

    1. Bay Area native Daniel Nava was DFA'd and elected free agency. It wouldn't be a bad idea for the Giants to offer him a minor league contract at least, since he could serve as a stop gap in LF in case the Giants decide not to go after a long term solution via FA or trade and choose to hold the position for Big Mac and/or J Parker.

    2. If you take out 2013 and Nava hasn't really shown he can hit. He was great in 2013 but every other year and he was exposed. Plus he is 32.

    3. Yeah, I think Nava may still be running on the coattails of one very good season in a lot of people's minds.
