Down on the Farm: 9/9/2014

The Binghampton Mets beat the Richmond Flying Squirrels in Game 1 of the EL Championship series 5-2:

Daniel Carbonell(CF)- 2 for 4, 3B, SB.
Tyler Horan(RF)- 1 for 2, 2B.
Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 5 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.
Kyle Crick(RHP)- 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.

Carbonell continues to handle the best the EL has to offer with apparent ease.  Tough night for Blackburn and Cricky.

Adalberto Mejia is the Squirrels starter for Game 2 facing 26 yo RHP Greg Peavey.

  1. Blackburn and Crick don't seem to progressing like big time prospects the Giants hoped they would. It is kinda scary with the condition of the Giants starting rotation as it stands now. Nice game by Petit, but how often can he do that? Hudson seems to be running low on octane and Vogelsong isn't getting any younger. Cain has to come back as the real Cain or "gulp" for next year. These young Giants hurlers have to start establishing themselves or the Giants are going to be at the grace of the free agent market or someone else's hand-me-downs. .I realize it isn't a popular opinion, but I wonder what a WS winning shortstop would bring? Just reaching for straws!

    1. I think Blackburn and Crick are doing fine.

    2. I am afraid Bumgarner set some unrealistic expectations for young pitchers. It may be better to think how Wheeler was doing at the same stage. Bumgarner is an exception in how soon he developed into a MLB pitcher.

    3. After reading the rest of the posts, I want to clarify that I mentioned Wheeler as a pitcher, drafted out of HS, whose development we followed closely until AA levels. It has nothing to do with the trade.

  2. Not sure how you can say that about Blackburn. He had a great season and seemed to get better. Crick had his moments too. I think this is just what it is. Playoffs and they didn't pitch their best game. Maybe more of an issue for Crick, but Blackburn to me has only gone up.

    1. Agree that they got better statistically, but in terms of innings pitched, I was hoping for more.

  3. I am not too concerned with the SPs just yet. In the minors, the kids are working on their weaknesses, not working on building stats. Stratton, for example, looked HORRID in '13, but has actually had a moderately OK season this year, and that is at advanced levels. Perhaps the rumors of his demise were greatly exaggerated? Even if a bunch of our SPs bust, we have enough of them to still get a couple hits (Blach, Blackburn, Crick, Stratton, Beede, Agosta, Mejia, Florres, etc, etc, etc)

Carbonell, to me, is looking like he may be grabbing that #1 prospect label, and not letting it go until he hits AT&T. Nice to see. I actually see our top 2 prospects right now being two kids who are brand new to the org (Carbonell and Beede), and I am still very positive on Crick, FTR.

    1. Have you seen this Carbonell video? What you think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3OpgaDQpI0

  4. I will. First, if you want to drain on about a trade that happened years ago, fine. It's been discussed. Some agree. Some don't. Bottom line it was bad because we didn't win. No one complains about Pence now. Does the trade set us back this year? Sure. Does it next year? Depend on how the kids. But it was calculated. You just don't like the result.

Second, who are you to come here an insult some one who has done nothing other than provide a forum for Giants fans? You want to have an opinion--fine. Be respectful. And show some spine and put a name to the immature, rude and disrespectful post if you want in a shred of credibility. Which you have none of.

    1. Thanks PiLamBear,

Gotta wonder why someone who apparently hates the blog also apparently reads it everyday.

    2. Petit was a NYM pick. He was also the no. 2 Met prospect in 2005 and 2006. Later he was a key minor leaguer in the trade for slugger Carlos Delgado. Giants picked Petit up for free. I'd like to think that was payback for Wheeler. In my mind G's traded Wheeler for Petit … EOM
