Down on the Farm: 8/31/204

AAA  Tacoma Rainiers defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 7-3:

Gary Brown(CF)- 1 for 4, SB(36).  BA= .267.
Jarrett Parker(RF)- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .267.
Mark Minicozzi(1B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .298.
Jake Dunning(RHP)- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.57.

Brown gets passed over for a September call up despite already being on the 40 man roster.  You have to think that there is something the Giants are down on him about that we don't fully know about.  Just speculation, of course, but he's a former first round pick who can't even get a call up with expanded rosters?  When he already has a 40 man roster spot?  Not that he's exactly broken down the doors, but if the Giants still have any hope for him at all, it seems like maybe it's time to try a little positive reinforcement and feedback rather than continuing to slap him in the face at every opportunity.  If they don't have any hope, then why not trade him to another organization or simply release him?

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels blanked the Binghampton Mets 1-0:

Angel Villalona(1B)- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .224.
Myles Schroder(RF)- 2 for 3, SB(11).  BA= .252.
Ty Blach(LHP)- 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.13.
Steven Okert(LHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.73.

Blach pitched well enough this year, but you have to wonder about the K and BB numbers.  Okert seems like a fairly good bet to eventually fill a lefty reliever role with the Giants when Affeldt and Lopez are done.

High A  High Desert Mavericks stampeded the San Jose Giants 9-6:

Daniel Carbonell(CF)- 3 for 5.  BA= .344.
Ryan Lollis(DH)- 3 for 5.  BA= .257.
Tyler Horan(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(9).  BA= .317.
Chuckie Jones(RF)- 1 for 4, HR(15).  BA= .258.
Jake Smith(RHP)- 1.2 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 10.80.
Stephen Johnson(RHP)- 3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.65.

Carbonell continues to show a hit tool.  Horan has torn up the Cal League since his midseason promotion.  Can't wait to see what he does in Richmond next year.  Can Chuckie Jones hack the EL next year?  Jake Smith had been lights out in relief, but stumbles badly in his first shot at starting.  Johnson has shown the ability to go multiple innings.

Low A  Charleston River Dogs beat the Augusta Greenjackets 5-0:

Randy Ortiz(CF)- 0 for 3, BB, 2 SB(8).  BA= .264.
Joan Gregorio(RHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 10 K's.  ERA= 3.57.

Nice to see Gregorio finish on a strong note.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Boise Hawks 4-3 in 10 innings:

Hunter Cole(LF)- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .250.
Shilo McCall(RF)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .199.
Tyler Beede(RHP)- 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.70.
Eury Sanchez(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(14).  ERA= 3.48.

Disappointing season for Shilo McCall, who I had high hopes for at the beginning of the season.  I would say his future is very cloudy at this point.  Gotta find some traction somewhere.  I would say Beede's first pro season has been OK, not great.  Want to see more next year, probably in SJ, I would think.

Rookie AZL  Giants beat the Mariners 6-2 to advance to the AZL Championship game today:

Byron Murray(DH)- 2 for 4, 3B.
Jonah Arenado(3B)- 2 for 3, 2B, HBP.
Julio Pena(RF)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR.
Michael Santos(RHP)- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 8/0.
Rayan Hernandez(RHP)- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K.

The young kids are leading the way for the AZL Giants.  Gotta like that!

The Giants called up 5 players for the first day of expanded rosters:

Mike Kickham, LHP- Kickham kind of stumbled down the stretch in Fresno, so this is a bit of a surprise.  He is another LH arm in the bullpen.

Juan Perez- Rides the Fresno-SF shuttle once again.

Chris Dominguez- 20/20 season for Fresno and played a whole bunch of positions.  He still strikes out a whole lot, though.  Added bonus:  He gets added to the 40 man roster!

Guillermo Quiroz- Giants needed to add a 3'rd catcher and Quiroz was the only one who is likely MLB ready.

Hunter Strickland- Hard throwing RHP reliever.  I do want to see any innings he gets to pitch.  Possible future MLB bullpen arm, possibly even a future closer?

No Gary Brown and no Jarrett Parker….yet.  See my comments re. Brown above.  Maybe they will get the call after today's final Fresno game?

And Tyler Horan reportedly gets called to Richmond to help in the EL playoffs!

  1. Best guess about Brown: Brown and the Giants' coaches are deadlocked about some issue of batting technique. The coaches want him to modify his approach to do A, but he doggedly insists on sticking with B. Over time it becomes a battle of wills. The coaches say, see, B isn't working; he says, A won't work, I'm sticking with B. So unless he kills it using his B technique, they won't reward him.

As I said, just a guess.

    1. As good a guess as any. Also just a guess, but I have long suspected that Brown has some sort of off-field issue that is eating at him, although no specific thoughts of what it might be.

  2. Plain and simple. Brpwm doesn't deserve to be recalled...His former #1 status means nothing...Relatively poor at the plate, poor on the base paths for his speed..Only his defense is ML capable right now..Perez deserves the recall over him...

Still, maybe he gets recalled a little later in September depending on circumstances.

Really looking forward to STRICKLAND..might even play an important role.....We'll see..

    1. You really think Perez deserves the recall over Brown? I mean, I really like Juan Perez, but he's, well, Juan Perez! Also, not sure why their call ups would be mutually exclusive.

Not that they play the same position, but adding Dominguez to the 40 man and calling him up while letting Brown languish is another real slap in the face.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Brown is the CF of the future or anything remotely like that. I'm just saying the Giants are making it embarrassingly obvious they do not like something about him and I mean they really don't like it!

    2. The Giants have always gone out of their way to treat players like humans.

They will cut you go early so you can catch on with another club.

They tend not to treat players like commodities, to be bought low and sold high. If you have done well, they will pay you (reasonably close to market rate, unless they make an incompetent/honest mistake in valuation).

      Things like that.

This obvious public embarrassing is not in the best interest of any one, IMHO. Any tough love or teaching is best done privately, I think. Otherwise, they could better use his 40 man roster spot, perhaps, by trading him.

    3. I agree which makes Brown's situation all the more puzzling. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, too.

  3. If Carbonell was raw, he sure has developed rather quickly. One can't do this well on being just raw good or raw great.

On the other hand, if he is doing it on raw talent, I can't wait to see when him is developed.

  4. Alex P tweeted that there may be another wave of call ups after today, so maybe I'm making more out of Brown's situation than is warranted.

    1. That kind of treatment would be unusual on the part of the Giants, I think.

  5. I know Chuckie Jones was a toolsy athletic prospect, but I don't know if they've ever considered him in CF. Has he just been consistently blocked by super-fast players like Galindo and Carbonell?

    1. He played CF several times this season but mostly RF. I think he played mostly CF last year in Augusta.

  6. Went to the Fresno game last night - most of the Grizzlie players looked like they were sleep walking through this one. The only one who really showed some spark was Jarrett Parker who had doubles off the wall in right center and left center. Perhaps the rest were disappointed at not being called up. Jake Dunning looked okay as he stretched out to 5 innings. The 2 runs he gave up were on solo homeruns. He was around 88-89 with his fastball and occasionally hit 91. His offspeed stuff looked okay. Will be interesting to see how he progresses next year. Brownie still has that slightly pained expression on his face when he bats. Not sure if it is his way of concentrating or what. APGiantsfan

  7. Brown is coming up tweeted by Bags.

  8. You guys were reading too much into the delay in Brown's call up, as hypothesized. He was kept in Fresno simply to help with closing the season out.
