Game Wrap 6/20/2013: Marlins 2 Giants 1

The Giants offense failed to mount an attack against a winless pitcher with an ERA of over 5 coming in and the Giants bullpen could not hold onto a 1-0 lead.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .263.  Belt is hitting .324 over his last 10 games.

Joaquin Arias- 1 for 2, 3B, BB.  BA= .286.  Remember when Arias was the forgotten guy on the bench?  Right now, he has an 11 game hitting streak with a .385 BA over his last 10 games.

Chad Gaudin- 4.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 6/2.  ERA= 2.60.  Gaudin was pitching with much better authority than his last start in ATL although you might not be able to tell from the numbers.  He came out early after taking a comebacker off his right elbow diagnosed as a contusion.  With no fractures, I would think he makes his next start.

Sandy Rosario- 2.2 IP,  0 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.27.  Rosario was, once again, terrific with nasty stuff.  Unfortunately, he walked the leadoff batter in the 8'th which prompted Bochy to bring in Affeldt, who proceeded to allow the inherited runner to score as well as one of his own.  Ballgame.

The Loss dropped the Giants to 2 games behind the idle NL West leading D'Backs.  The Padres climbed into 3'rd place, 2.5 games behind the leaders with a 6-3 win over the Last Place Dodgers who are 8.5 games behind.  The Rockies lost to the Nationals 5-1 to fall into 4'th place, 3 games off the pace.

Tim Lincecum faces Ricky Nolasco tomorrow night.

  1. do the giants bother looking at vid of pitchers they have never faced, who everyone seems to hit, but them?

    tonite was sad

and once again, i must note that belt still hasnt gotten the concept of a tell yet

you dont face a closer, get 2 strikes on you...then let out a huge sigh, before returning to the plate to swing and k

love him all you want, but showing a pitcher how you feel in the middle of an at bat is a huge no no....and this has been going on for 2.5 years....which means the kid is never gonna learn

giant need an arm....put belt in as part of the package...he will love houston...close to home and that band box will make him feel like a stud

really havent been upset with this team all season...but tonite was a joke

miami isnt a team...its a fricken write off....and if you cant beat a write off, you have no biz being in the majors

and i really would love to know what was going on in ahhhhfeldt and bochy's heads...first base open...dont have to give that joke of a hitter anything over the plate...yet they do?

    1. Ball wasn't really over the plate but it was in the same location again and again. Question I have is why didn't he throw one of those sweeping curves, or bust him inside. Rookie hitter, struggling mightily. That was frustrating. I hate the Marlins.

    2. I followed the inning on my MLB APP and noticed Affeldt was throwing fastballs and change ups the whole inning and wondered if he didn't have confidence in his curve ball for some reason. He's struggled in the past because of it. Very frustrating when he hit the 1st batter he faced. Maybe we'll see Dunning or Machi tonight if they have a 8th inning lead. Can't wait for Casilla to come back.

I can't get too upset with this team because they are dealing with a lot of injuries and are only 2 games back. They are in a tough stretch right now.

    3. One question Bacci, how'd Belt look when he wacked that double to start the rally that gave us the lead?

    4. If I had been watching, I would have let out a huge sigh at Belt's double.

  2. arroyo was at the game today. guess the hard cap is very good for quick signings. although i believe that it will lead to someone challenging the legality of the draft.

i dont remember looking that young at 18

headed out to az for rest of the season...guess he goes to salk next year

kid seems to have a good head on his shoulders and a very supportive family...hope he keeps up his education during the offseaon...

    1. No one is going to risk getting blackballed by MLB to challenge the draft before even becoming a pro. But I can see Boras pushing someone to do that, but that is a huge risk to take, plus it would push away precious years of development while you sit and wait. Especially when the only prospect type that would make sense is a Harper, but $20M vs $8-9M, either way you are pretty set up for life.

  3. Ugh, the injuries just keep coming. We now have an unwanted trifecta, Pagan injured scoring at home, Crawford just jammed his fingers at second, and noe Torres at third base.

Pagan if he gets surgery would be out 6-8 weeks, so will not be back until mid to late August, they would have been better off operating instead of that blood thing they did.

    1. And Pagan re-injuring/aggravating the injury running to first in San Jose.

    2. I'm not an orthopedist and certainly not a sports medicine specialist, but I'm pretty sure I saw a recent study that failed to show any benefit from those injections.
