Down on the Farm: 5/20/2013

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies pounded the Oklahoma City Redhawks 10-3:

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .206.
Brett Pill(1B)- 3 for 4, BB.  BA= .368.
Roger Kieschnick(RF)- 1 for 4, HR(6), BB.  BA= .311.
Tony Abreu(DH)- 2 for 3, HR(1), HBP.  BA= .667.
Johnny Monell(C)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(6).  BA= .272.

A Tony Abreu sighting!

AA  Trenton Thunder defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-3:

Javier Herrera(DH)- 2 for 4, SB(12).  BA= .282.
Mark Minicozzi(3B)- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .312.

High A  San Jose Giants beat the Inland Empire 66'ers 5-1:

Brock Bond(2B)- 2 for 4, 3B, BB.  BA= .294.
Mac WIlliamson(RF)- 2 for 5, 3B, Assist(home).  BA= .253.
Angel Villalona(1B)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .213.
Austin Fleet(RHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.45.
Josh Osich(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.82.
Cody Hall(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.63.
Hunter Strickland(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.90.

Nice recovery from yesterday's 4 K collar by Angel V.  I wonder if Josh Osich would consider trying starting again?  He has 22 IP in 18 games but has only gone over 1 inning once in his last 10 appearances, a 1.2 inning stint on May 2 vs Bakersfield.  Seems like a waste of talent for him to be a 1 inning at at time reliever, unless he's going to eventually be a closer.

Low A  Rome Braves blanked the Augusta Greenjackets 6-0:

Really, nothing to see here.  'Jackets managed just 2 hits and the pitching was meh.  Farley pitched 3 shutout innings.  That's it.

  1. I predict Roger K goes on a tear now and forces his way into the mix. No word yet on how he injures himself a month later though.

I think its time to promote Hunter Strickland. Maybe Osich as well.

Nice for Downtown Gary Brown to jump on a ball. I'm going to go surf Milb and see if there's a highlight.

    1. Took a look at his game numbers today. His contact rate was so-so to OK in the early parts of the season, but then it started plummeting after around 20 games. He has barely been himself this season in terms of batting discipline, he has been striking out a lot more than he had previously.

He barely kept his averages over 80% for much of the season, roughly first month of the season, then plunged down to the low 60's, over 10 games stretches, until it started heading up again in the last week (4 games). Still, the numbers are nothing to write home about. Brown needs to focus on regaining control of the strike zone, he seems to be better in the last 4 games overall, but right now, for him, it's one game at a time.

  2. It would be nice if Osich can be a starter again.

Are the Giants just being cautious with him, which would be understandable if that's what their medical people advise?

    1. Last year, Osich said he is more comfortable pitching out of the bullpen.

    2. Yeah, I recall that as well that he said that. With that type of stuff, closing would be a natural thing for him to take on. But yeah, seems like a waste for him not to start.

I don't recall, what is his health history, was his health issue before the draft just a one time thing or does he have a history of injuries? could that be part of the reason why?

    3. Osich had Tommy John surgery at the beginning of his sophomore season. He came back barely in time for his Junior season. Then near the end of his Junior/draft year, he reportedly developed recurrent elbow soreness. Giants delayed drafting him until the 5'th round because they were waiting for last minute medical reports.

  3. I visit here daily. You are a good reporter.

Brown, I thought, was dead money from the moment they drafted him and said so at the time. A 3% walk rate in college is indicative of serious problems in hitting approach.

    1. Well, I disagree with that. He has shown the ability to up his walk rate when he has to. There is no point in keeping the bat on your shoulders if you can hit .400 swinging.

Brown looks to me like he's regressed. This is pure speculation on my part, but when I see this type of career trajectory, I become suspicious of a nagging injury or off-field issue.

  4. As numerous people noted at the time, Brown's walk rate was low because he was getting on base through hits at so great a rate that it made sense for him to swing the bat; in the Cape Cod league, as I recall, when he was less sensational as a hitter, he had a considerably higher walk rate. My suspicion is that the Giants scouts & FO can evaluate simple stats, or even complex ones, quite ably.

    1. the Gints scouts and FO can absolutely evaluate all stats much better than all the interwebz. And fix little problems like swing mechanics, deliveries et al. They are a professional baseball organization. The amount of words typed to the contrary by Giants "fans"...
