Down on the Farm: 5/12/2013

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies beat the Memphis Redbirds 7-4 in 11 innings:

Gary Brown(CF)- 3 for 6, 2B.  BA= .220.
Chris Dominguez(3B)- 2 for 5, HR(5).  BA= .269.
Johnny Monell(1B)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .247.
Jean Machi(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(11).  ERA= 2.00.

Brownie is hitting .326 over his last 10 games.  Is Chris Dominguez rehabilitating his status as a prospect?  Machi is saying he's ready any time he is needed as is Hembree.

AA  Altoona Curve edged the Richmond Flying Squirrels 2-1:

Joe Panik(2B)- 0 for 2, 2 BB, SB(3).  BA= .301.
Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 0 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .231.
Chris Gloor(LHP)- 6.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.22.
Jameson Taillon(RHP, Curve)- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 2.82.

Panik once again has more walks than K's.  Jameson Taillon is a former #2 overall pick by the Pirates and is one of the elite pitching prospects in baseball.

High A  High Desert Mavericks blanked the San Jose Giants 6-0:

Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 4 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.65.
Cody Hall(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.00.
Bryce Bandilla(LHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.30.

Blackburn had an uncharacteristic number of walks and it showed in the runs allowed column.  Don't know if he got squeezed by the ump or if he just didn't have command.

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets outslugged the Greenville Drive 10-6:

Jesus Galindo(CF)- 2 for 3, 2B, 2 BB, 4 SB(23).  BA= .287.
Matt Duffy(SS)- 1 for 2, 2B, 3 BB.  BA= .299.
Joseph Rapp(1B)- 3 for 4, 2 2B, SF.  BA= .400.
Rafael Rodriguez(LF)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .197.
Chuckie Jones(RF)- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .175.
Eric Sim(C)- 1 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .207.
Brandon Farley(RHP)- 3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.83.
Mason McVay(LHP)- 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.96.
Tyler Mizenko(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.

Galindo is on fire!  Matt Duffy is another guy with a reversed K/BB.  Joey Rapp makes his second appearance of the year after suffering an injury in game 1.  Watch this guy.  He's a major sleeper!

  1. I'd love to know the circumstances of Blackburn's start. No info on Joe Ritzo's twitter feed about it.

I'm sorry I missed Gary Brown's game yesterday. I was there for Saturday's game. Dominguez's HR that day was a no-doubter. And I agree, Machi and Hembree are both primed and ready for the bigs.

Altoona isn't a very good team, but Taillon looks like the genuine article. Gotta love the two walks from Panik.

With 1B such a black hole in the system, Rapp certainly has the opportunity to advance if he's good enough.

Maybe you should start pool to see when Mizenko gives up his first run of the season. I'll go with June 12th.

    1. I think so far, only Escobar and Agostino, among starters, have really distinguished themselves.

Looking forward for others to step up.

    2. I thought Joan Gregorio has done great so far: 4 starts, 1.42 ERA, 18.0 IP, 13 hits, 5 walks, 25 K's, only 21 in A-ball. And Stratton has done nicely as well. Not a starter, but McVay has done well too, as well as Osich.

    3. Yeah, I don't agree that Escobar and Agosta are the only SP prospects to distinguish themselves. Chris Marlowe is pitching really well for SJ. If you look at the peripheral stats for Kickham and Heston and remember just how tough the PCL is, they have actually pitched pretty well too.

    4. ..er I mean Escobar and Agosta AREN'T the only SP prospects to distinguish themselves.

    5. Oh forget it! I've got my double negatives out of control. Had it right in the first place.

  2. 5 Multi hit games from Brown in those 10 games and 6 doubles. Hope he is paying attention to professional instruction and that's the reason for the slow start. What is strange though is the 15 Ks in 46 ABs, that is not Gary Brown's game usually.

Duffy is 15th in the Sally in OPS, hanging with some major bonus baby talent. Tom Murphy, Palwecki, Eilender and Peter O'Brien for catchers, Jayce Boyd, Stetson Allie and Christian Walker for 1B, and the 5MM overslot man himself, Josh Bell. He's ahead of notables Gallo, Nimmo and Brinson. Of course he's older for the level, but its something. Houck and Galindo are on the leaderboard as well.

  3. pegs sent down, pill up

in light of belt starting to come around, this move makes little sense

what even makes less sense are these comments by schulman

Peguero also hit well in Fresno but was 3-for-16 with spotty defense during his brief stay in San Francisco.
These moves are not a surprise in light of Peguero’s struggles and Angel Pagan showing that his right leg is healthy enough to allow one fewer outfielder on the roster.

what the hell is henry talking about? 16 at bats is way too small of a sample size and what struggles in the of? did i miss a couple of e's by pegs? cuz i could swear he made a few outstanding catches in lft

    1. I was just thinking about this. I don't think the problem with Pegs was his BA but rather his AB's. If the last guy on the bench is not going to get AB's, and you are committed to using prospects to fill your bench, then it does make sense to rotate them between the MLB club and Fresno so they don't get too rusty on the bench. Just a thought. I honestly don't know.

    2. That's an interesting thought, Doc. I think Pill makes more sense for the composition of this lineup, but that is a minor point. Cycling in the AAA kids so none of them get too rusty is a good call. This also allows for a better chance to catch the hot hand. I would guess Roger gets his first taste within the month, assuming your hypothesis is accurate.

    3. While 16 AB is too little to tell statistically, the Giants clearly want to see certain things out of their hitters, and apparently Pegs was not showing it.

And I doubt this has anything to do with Belt, who has hit .286/.375/.554/.929 since April 22, in 19 games and 15 starts, with 4 HR in 56 AB.

I think it is more related to other reasons, like he's got a lot more options to go, he's a clear prospect who they want to give a lot of AB's, but if the MLB team needs an OF, why not have our coaches check him out up here and get some instruction? But when they don't necessarily need him anymore, send him down to get regular ABs and prove that what he is hitting in AAA is real and not a mirage of small sample proportions, he's never really hit well in AAA in his career so far, people seem to be forgetting.

Meanwhile, Pill has done everything the team has asked him to, and probably would have made the bench on opening day if he wasn't injured, and the team is heading into the AL portion of their schedule, where they can have Pill take the DH role, since Arias, Noonan, and the other LF could move in on a double switch, but not if they were DHing.

I suppose Sandoval could take DH, but he's young and wouldn't we rather he work off weight fielding than sitting on the bench? Plus, not all players can hit well while sitting on the bench in between ABs, they get cold, etc. Same really for any other position starter. Also, he might view it as an insult, much like why Dusty started Lofton in CF in the World Series instead of Shinjo when Shinjo was clearly the better fielder, he didn't want to insult him (that's where Bochy shines over Dusty, Bruce would have rather had the defensive edge there, damn the player's ego).

And the only other position player who makes sense DHing would be Posey, but if Quoroz went down for any reason, placing Posey at C would cost the team their DH. Pill is perfect for the DH role given the current construction of the bench.

For that reason, I don't see the Giants cycling in the other prospects like Roger, unless there is a specific need for an OF.

    4. Even in your scenario here, one reason for bringing Pegs up was to let the MLB coaches get a look at him and the reason to send him back down is to get AB's and practice what the coaches have told him. If that isn't cycling, I don't know what is.

    5. i have no prob if they sent pegs back to make sure he is getting at bats everyday, just wanna know if henry came up with that blurb on his own, or if someone fed it to him

      isnt pill out of options?

i know that he is probably safe if placed on waivers, but maybe they shouldve tried out dominguez, who can play left and 3rd, and come off the bench with some pop

not really questioning the move, would just like word from the fo as to the logic behind it

    6. That is the croix de candlestick of the situation - Peggs and Pill are both out of options next year. So there is a little evaluation going on - and you can't say Pill can't candle AAA - he has destroyed the league. I am pretty sure Kieschick is in the same boat so he might be next on the shuffle puck if there is an injury.

    7. Hah. I meant to say handle, not candle.

    8. Yes, Pegs was cycled, I was answering the point about cycling going forward this season, I don't see that happening, as I expect Pill to hit well enough to hold that job.

Thinking more about it, what I can see is the Giants deciding that Torres isn't up to snuff and they decide to bring up Pegs or Kieschnick to take a look at them as a regular starter (assuming Blanco continues to be what he has been).

And I don't know either, just trying to add to the discussion.

Pill should still have an option left, I think. He's never been much of a hot prospect until his 2011 season, at which point I believe the Giants added him to the 40-man roster that off-season to protect him. If I got that timing right, then we used options for him in 2012 and 2013, and have one more left for 2014.

And Pill can come off the bench with some pop, he's been busting homers in AAA, and 6 HR in 155 AB in the majors, a good 26 AB/HR ratio, roughly 25 HR season if he played a full season. Also, probably more importantly vis-a-vis Dominguez, he does not strikout out that much, good 82.5% contact rate in majors (ideally best hitters at 85% and higher) so far, nice for a part time player put into tough PH situations most of the time.

But according to BB-Reference's defense metrics, Peguero has been outstanding (again! he was even better in 2012's small sample) in LF (similar enough stats too to 2012) and his UZR has been very good too. By any of the top defensive metrics, he is worth anywhere from 2 to 8 WAR just on defense alone.

Still, I would note that Freddy Lewis was rated as a very good defensive LF, but we all knew that it was an adventure out there with his routes and reaction to batted balls, so Peguero's results could be strongly related to his speed, much like Lewis.

I would guess that a Giants coach probably mentioned to Hank at some point that Peguero still had some issues fielding - eh, nobody's perfect, right? - and that got tossed into his commentary about the demotion. but yeah, it would be nice to see what management had to say about Peguero, but they generally don't complain publicly to the press until the players refuses to listen to them privately (like Belt) or worse, publicly grouses, like Frandsen and others did.

  4. I also think the issue with Pegs wasn't the BA as it was his AB's. Aside from his first AB (double to the wall), didn't see Pegs have a good approach at the plate. Not only did he struggle to go deep in the count, but you could tell he was pressing as he continually bounced weak ground balls to the left side of the infield. Small sample size for sure, but he could have maximized his opportunities and didn't in my opinion. Although I'm not sure what Hank was talkin about with his defense. All that to say, I think this was a good experience for him and I'm hopeful he'll develop to a solid mlb player.
