Down on the Farm: 5/1/2013

AAA  Sacramento River Cats beat the Fresno Grizzlies 4-1:

Brett Pill(1B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .368.
Chris Heston(RHP)- 6.2 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 BB,  6 K's.  ERA= 6.06.

Some improvement for Heston who at least got a QS out of it.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels pounded the Bowie Baysox 11-6:

Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 2 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .211.
Javier Herrara(DH)- 3 for 5, 2 2B, SB(7).  BA= .315.
Andrew Susac(C)- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(4).  BA= .297.
Ryan Lollis(CF)- 2 for 4, 2B,  BA= .222.

Nice game for Ricky. Hopefully May will bring more success than April.  He did not get many AB's in March due to an extended stay in MLB camp.

High A  Bakersfield Blaze defeated the San Jose Giants 6-4:

Ryan Cavan(2B)- 2 for 5.  BA= .366.
Devin Harris(LF)- 3 for 5.  BA= .309.
Mac Williamson(RF)- 2 for 4, SB(1).  BA= .256.
Edwin Escobar(LHP)- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 2.16.
Bryce Bandilla(LHP)- 1.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.57.

Williamson backs up his 3 hit game yesterday with a 2 hit game today.  Bandilla has all of a sudden become very hittable.

Low A  Hagerstown Suns scored all 5 of their runs in the first inning to top the Augusta Greenjackets 5-3:

Jesus Galindo(CF)- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .267.
Matt Duffy(SS)- 1 for 1, 2B, 3 BB, SB(8).  BA= .312.
Brandon Farley(RHP)- 3.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.89.
Steven Okert(LHP)- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.50.

The Greenjackets only managed a total of 3 hits in the game.  Okert has 5 scoreless IP, with 5 K's over his last 2 appearances after a tough start to the season.

  1. We were talking about the SJ pitchers on my reg board today, and the topic of promotions came up. How long do you think it will take before Escobar and Blackburn move up to Richmond? They are soooo dominant right now, I wonder what the point is.

They also need the space in SJ for Stratton, Agosta, Flores, Gregorio, etc, etc, etc...

    1. Historically, the Giants have placed emphasis on keeping a successful SJ team intact until they have the first half safely won to guarantee them a playoff spot. Also, they have a history of being hyperaggressive with promoting pitchers but have toned that down a lot in recent years. I would not be holding my breath for any promotions.

    2. Cal Snow - what's your regular board?

I'd look to the skip to Richmond actually as a viable option for Stratton/Agosta before a SJ move personally.

Who has skipped SJ? Not many - Kickham recently.

    4. I would also note that the Giants like to keep their top prospects in San Jose for the season, particularly pitching, so that their local personnel (like Sabean et al) can look at them regularly, since San Jose is so close to SF.

Yeah, the Giants have focused on building a winner in San Jose, not so much with their other minor league affiliates. So promotions from San Jose are usually harder to come by.

Don't recall many who skipped SJ, just Dirty comes to mind. But given that Stratton and Agosta are college draftees, I don't see why they can't be jumped to AA, other than maybe Sabean et al wanting to see what they got by having them stop in SJ.

Still, they are about the same age as the league, maybe slightly old, and while among the leaders, not in the top 10 in K/9 or K/BB (while Gregorio is), so that, for me, would be a good reason why they don't jump SJ, they are not clearly dominant, and with so many good starters in SJ who might get promoted to AA, I think the Giants would wait to end of May, early June, to shift all together, Augusta to SJ to Richmond, and shuffle the deck in that way. I think Gregorio would have a better chance of jumping SJ, he's younger than the two, yet his K/9 and K/BB are both much better or just as good (basicaly, his BB/9 is superb and much better than either of the two).

    5. Cal Snow - thanks for the info. I'll check it out. Not ready to join another forum at the moment, forum fatigue, but sounds cool.

    7. That would be great! The board is a decent sports board. Just messaging though. No content or blogging or anything like that.

  2. Instead of regressing, Susac has taken a step forward in the past 10 games. 333/436/606 with 6BB/7K and 3 2Bs/2 HRs. Nice start, and if he can control the K zone, look out.

Are they stretching Okert out for taking the bump? That would be exciting.

Escobar is looking good. Missing bats, limiting BBs. Good for him to stretch out 6IP.

    1. Yeah, noticed that Susac is kicking butt, it must have really been him focusing on defense last season and now he can focus on offense, as some has suggested. And those are great numbers for AA, particularly in light of the Eastern League being more of a pitcher's league overall. His talent/tools is probably what convinced the Giants to part with Joseph last season. Nice BB/K ratio makes his strikeouts more tolerable as well.
