Hot Tip: Brian Sabean's Comments on Brandon Belt

Hey team! Check out today's post by Carl Steward on Extra Baggs. You can find the link over on the left hand side of this blog. Keep in mind that Brian Sabean never, ever makes positive comments about prospects. Heck, he couldn't even find anything good to say about Buster Posey before he came up for good! Go read if for yourself. All I can say is this is very uncharacteristic of Brian Sabean. Either Brandon Belt is the is going to make all of us forget that Will Clark was ever a Giant, or he's going to be the biggest disappointment in the history of the franchise. Sounds to me like if Belt comes out raking in Spring training, he's going to be the starting first baseman and there's going to be a lot of dominoes fall on the roster.

  1. Yes, this is totally rare for Sabean to gush so much about a position prospect before spring training.

Then again, he hasn't had a prospect who looked possibly ready both offensively and defensively before spring training either. JT was gushing about his defensive abilities at 1B last season, and we all know how well Belt hit last season. Posey, meanwhile, BA said that he needed additional work defensively yet many Giants fans still persist with the fantasy that Sabean held back Posey last season and should have started him earlier.

Not that top prospects are slam dunks, but Belt will probably be only the third position player during the Sabean era to be considered a top prospect in all of baseball after all the Top Prospects lists come out for the 2011 season over the next few months leading up to spring training. I think only Posey and Villalona made those lists. And only Posey was in the Top 10-20, so it will be interesting if Belt joins him in that distinction.

The post by Steward is really amazing, I am just as excited as DrB about the gushing by Sabean. I won't be bothered if the Giants end up letting him start in AAA, it is just a matter of time for Belt, he's the real deal in terms of prospects. Hopefully he can make the transition OK and not be an Andy Marte or Sean Burroughs.

  2. Jason Ellison is a jealous guy.

We lost Paterson and Turpen was taken from BoSox.

For some reasons, I liked them both when the Giants drafted them in 2005 or 2006(I can't remember the year).
I think they were teammates before the draft, it would have been a nice story if they had joined the Giants team together. Maybe they will be able to make it in two different teams. Obviously, Paterson has a better chance.

  3. Since this is sooo out of character for Sabes, is it possible he is making the sell for a prospective buyer? Could we see a blockbuster deal made in the next couple weeks?

I dont really see many possibilities out there, except maybe Arizona with Drew or Upton, but you have to scratch your head a bit with these comments...

You know, I thought the same thing as I read the post. Although I love what Belt could potentially bring to the table, I wouldn't complain if he was part of a deal for a proven, young commodity like Upton.

  5. Given how expensive our pitching is and will be in the coming years, I think Sabean will hold on to every cost-controlled asset he can. I can't see him trading Belt any time soon.

  6. Thanks for the comments, everybody. You never know, but my guess is that Sabean is genuinely excited about Belt and will not trade him. I do think a 25 man roster spot is his to lose in Spring Training.

I did have one other thought though: Maybe Sabes was paaartying a bit too hard down there in Orlando since he didn't really have any business to conduct.

  7. It really is funny how one comment from BS about a prospect has gotten the entire "lunatic fringe" in a lather the last couple days.

    LOL
