GiantsTop 50 Prospects #34: Paul Oseguera

#34 Paul Oseguera. LHP. BD: 01-06-1984. 6'0", 190 lbs.

2009 Stats: Low A- 1-1. 1.89, 19 IP, 5 BB, 25 K's. High A- 7-7, 3.77, 105 IP, 97 K's, 21 BB. GO/AO= 1.48.

We're into a run on polished LHP's here. Not sure why Oseguera got bumped down to A ball after pitching in AA in 2008 instead of simply repeating AA. I think he battled some sort of injury and the Giants have a pattern of bringing an injured pitcher back at a lower level the following year. Over the last 3 games of 2009, Paul O may have been the best pitcher in the Giants minor league system. Here are the lines from those games: 8/27- 9 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 15 K's! 9/2- 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 8 K's. 9/7- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. I saw the second of those games in San Bernardino. He was in complete command with what looked like a high 80's fastball with some sink, a curveball with great vertical depth, and a changeup that kept hitters off balance, but was not overused. I'm pretty sure he could have pitched a good game at the MLB level that night. He's a little old for a prospect, but I can easily see him as a #4 or #5 starter at the MLB level. I expect he will begin 2010 in AA Richmond.

  1. Somewhat off topic, but here goes...

Looking at your list of top prospects, how many will need to be protected from the rule V draft in 2011, 2012, etc.

Several years ago, I noted in the Giants message board that the Giants, who purported to have a lousy farm system, had the most players picked in the rule V draft. Your response is that the Giants had a bunch of grade C prospects, and those are the ones that get drafted. Going forward, the Giants have a significantly better group of grade C prospects who are at risk. The fact that Texas (the best farm system) traded to get Ben Synder says something about the quality of the Giant's group of crafty lefties. LOOGYs and bullpen arms are the least risk picks in such drafts, and the Giants have a bunch of them coming. Tanner, Clark, Oseguera, Turpen, Paterson, Edelsen, etc. Pretty tough roster decisions... (of course, better than not having enough players to protect)

  2. That's a really good observation. When you look at the Giants starting rotation now, and going forward, it's going to be a very tough club to join. Undoubtedly there will be an unexpected opening or two at some point, but with high ceiling guys like Bumgarner and Wheeler in the organization, it's not clear there's going to be room for Noah Lowry types.

Clayton Tanner, Craig Clark, Paul Oseguera, Eric Surkamp and Ari Ronick all appear to have the potential to be at least as good as Noah. At some point there's going to be a huge traffic jam. Rule 5 is a legitimate concern. You could think about trades, but the Giants are happily running out of holes to fill in the organization as they are much richer in offensive prospects than in the past.
