GiantsTop 50 Prospects #32: Mike McBryde

#32 Mike McBryde. OF. B-R, T-R. BD: 03-22-1985. 6'1", 215.

2009 Stats: AA- .308/.347/.434, 5 HR's, 16 SB's, 10 CS. AAA- .224/.250/.276, 6 SB's, 2 CS in 58 AB's.

You could make a case that Mike McBryde should be ranked ahead of Darren Ford and possibly ahead of Francisco Peguero as the Giants CF of the future. McBryde is probably the best defensive OF in the Giants organization. At one time, he was considered the fastest player in the organization(I believe Darren Ford has overtaken him to claim that distinction). He has a rocket launcher for a right arm. He played well at AA which is generally considered to be the toughest stop for hitters in the organization. Unfortunately for Mike, when the Giants were given a choice of eligible OF's to protect from the Rule 5 draft by adding them to the 40 man roster, they chose Peguero and Ford while Mike was the odd man out. That not only tells you who the Giants more didn't want to lose, but who they were more afraid other teams would take. Still, McBryde is the type of player who could stand to benefit greatly from the trend in baseball to rely on advanced defensive metrics such as UZR. The A's went out of their way to make sure that all 3 OF positions will be manned by players who can play CF and play it well. If that type of thinking proves to be successful on the field, it essentially doubles or even triples a guy like Mike McBryde's chances of eventually landing a MLB roster spot. Out of McBryde, Ford and Peguero, who do you think is most likely to be the Giants CF of the future?

  1. Can't say who'll be the best of the group, though Ford now seem to have the biggest upside.

Frankly, though, I suspect if they'd let McBryde, Ford, and Peguero to fight it out over center field in 2010 -- not 2011 or 2011 -- they'd be better off than with Rowand. Roward needs a bandbox park like those his played in before.

  2. Much as I think the Rowand contract is a bad one for the Giants, It would be a very tall order for any of these prospects to make the jump and be better this year.

  3. I just read a comment by ARFan over at Greg's CT Defenders Blog that implies Antoan Richardson is getting a Spring Training invite with the Braves. The comment could very well be talking about someone else. Hopefully, the comment is talking about Richardson as he seems like a good guy who deserves a break.

Think about the speed of an OF consisting of Richardson, McBryde, and Ford.

  4. Antoan Richardson. I loved the guy! Took a ton of walks and ran like greased lightning. He tended to start out every level with a very low batting average, but then would slowly bring it up as he got acclimated. The Giants stopped giving him playing time at AA level.

One of my fantasies is that someday the Giants are going to find/develop a Juan Pierre type player who can steal a ton of bases who also is very patient at the plate and enhances his OBP with a lot of walks. I mean, think of how great Juan Pierre would be with an OBP of .400! We've had a few guys who looked like they might have that potential in the system, Marcus Sanders was one. Richardson was another. I'm still waiting.

BTW, I wonder what Antoan has been doing since he was released, playing indy ball?

  5. Bingo! Antoan hooked up with the Schaumberg Flyers of the indy Northern League after his release by CT last year. His line?

    .287/.419!/.409 with 20 SB's, 2 CS. He scored 20 runs in 27 games.

If he could ever hit even .260, he'd be a very valuable leadoff hitter.

  6. My guess is that Peguero winds up being the best player out of that group. But, with that being said, I think he's at least 3 more years away from the majors; and I'm really looking forward to seeing what Ford does this year.

  7. I'm looking forward to getting to see Peguero play for San Jose this year. I've seen both Ford and McBryde. Of those two, Ford looks like he has the highest ceiling, by far.
