Game Wrap 4/21/2026: Giants 3 Dodgers 1

The Giants hung a 3-spot on Yoshinobu Yamamoto RHP in the first inning.  Landen Roupp and the bullpen made it stand up for a wire-to-wire win.  Key Lines:

Rafael Devers 1B- 1 for 4, RBI.  BA= .226.  Willy Adames SS and Luis Arraez 2B led off the Giants first inning with base hits and Matt Chapman 3B drew a walk to load to the bases.  This was the place where Devers has started to kill too many rallies this season but he laced a single to RF to drive in the critical first run and everybody moved up a base.

Jung Hoo Lee RF- 2 for 3, RBI.  BA= .259.  After a Sac Fly by Casey Schmitt DH, Lee lined the Giants 4'th single of the inning and the game to RF to drive in the Giants third and last run of the game.  4 of the Giants 6 hits in the game came in the critical first inning.  Lee is batting .407 over his last 7 games and .315 over his last 15.

Landen Roupp RHP- 5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.28.  Roupp was cruising along until the 4'th inning when he inexplicably walked 4 batters and looked like he was on the ropes.  No problem.  He gets out of the inning on a GIDP then came back out to retire the side in order in the 5'th.  Gutsy call by Manager Tony Vitello to bring him back out and a gutsy performance by RouppRouppRouppRoupp!  BTW, 2 of those 4 walks came on challenges:  One by Dodgers Catcher, Dalton Rushing,  that was overturned and one by Patrick Bailey C that was upheld.

Ryan Borucki LHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.87.  So let me get this straight:  Tony Vitello brought Ryan Borucki into a game to face the Dodgers with a 3-1 lead?  You gotta be......!  And he lived to tell about it?  Talk about a gutsy call.  I am quite sure if that move went the way most fans expected, there would be very loud calls for the manager to be fired.  The move did make some sense.  3 of the first 4 batters scheduled to hit batted left.  The lone RH batter, Teoscar Hernandez LF , doubled.  What if he hit a home run?

Ryan Walker RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(2).  ERA= 3.60.  Another gutsy call but Walker retired the side on order and struck out two batters in the process.

With the Win, the Giants record improved to 10-13. They stayed in 4'th place in the NL West 6 games behind the Dodgers and 4 games behind in the Wild Card race.

Tonight's game might be a mismatch with Shohei Ohtani RHP facing Tyler Mahle RHP.

  1. Giants pitchers threw 176 pitches with 7 walks and were often behind in the count. Dodgers threw 117 pitches with Yamamoto settling down. Effectively wild? A bit concerning to me. A good win for the Giants though. Landen Roupp indeed!

  2. How much does a manager matter? Some say not much since it’s the players who have to hit, pitch and catch the ball. But how those players are managed can certainly affect their confidence and performance and it sure seems that Tony V is growing into the job.

  3. Tonight will test the validity of every baseball game can be bet +/-1.5 runs: who would bet that the Bad Guys won't win by 2 or more runs?
Back in 2021, Mahle's best career year at 13-6 and the Reds won 20 of his 33 starts, he pitched twice against the Giants (who also had a good year) and took losses in both games. In one the Reds got shut out by Johnny Cueto (Webb and Rogers threw scoreless innings) but it was a good 3-0 game. In the other Mahle was shelled in a 19-4 loss lasting just 2 innings and giving up 7 runs.
In Mahle's last start, he gave up 8 runs in 4 innings against the Reds. The game before he shut out the Phillies for 5⅔ innings in a Giant 5-0 win.
In his 5 starts this year, Mahle has been good, bad, good, bad — is it time for a good game?

  4. Hats off to the Pitching and managing last night..Just enough runs from the top of the lineup in the 1st...Roupp (again!) and excellent work by the relievers and Vitello made it hold up..SHows how important a bullpen is and the need for consistency...4 out of 5..a good stretch . Do the Giants have any starters after Webbm R oupp and Ray..Be nice for Mahle to say "Hell Yeah!" tonight

  5. I would have used Tidwell as an opener tonight

    1. I could see using a lefty as an opener with 3 of 4 lefty hitters at the top of the Dodgers lineup but not sure how Tidwell helps.

  6. The comparisons of Roupp to Webb were made by a few people years ago so I won’t try to act like I was the only one to see it but he could actually be better than Webb. He is a bulldog with bark and bite. He throws harder and he is striking out more than Webb did at this point in his career. If things don’t go well this year and we end up sellers before the deadline, I feel pretty good about our rotation next year with Webb and Roupp as our anchors.

  7. Is there a reason that the Giants lead off with Adames with the 8th best OBP?
If you want to get your first batter get on base, why would you give the job to the guy who doesn't get on base?
Is R-L-R-L-R-L so much better than L-R-L-R-L-R, as in Arraez, Schmitt or Chapman or Ramos, Devers, Schmitt or Chapman or Ramos, Lee, then the RHB who is left?

    1. I prefer a higher OBP guy at the top of the lineup too but remember it only makes a difference one time through the lineup and sometimes it's about where a certain hitter is going to see better pitches to hit.
