The Giants battled back from a 5-1 deficit to take a 6-5 lead only to see the Save blown in the 9'th inning, but battled through three extra innings to end up with the Win. Key Lines:
Luis Arraez 2B- 2 for 6, 2 R. BA= .321. Arraez' BA over his last 7 games equals his season BA.
Matt Chapman 3B- 2 for 6, R, RBI. BA= .294. Chapman is 6 for 15 over his last 3 games.
Casey Schmitt DH- 2 for 5, 2B, R. BA= .317. Schmitt's double in the third inning closed the gap to 5-3 but he only got credit for 1 RBI as Chapman scored the second run on an error by the Nationals LF.
Jung Hoo Lee RF- 2 for 6, R. BA= .253. Lee has a 5-game hitting streak and is 9 for 21 in that stretch. He scored ahead of Heliot Ramos' home run in the 6'th inning but got thrown out at home on Ramos' double in the 2'nd.
Heliot Ramos LF- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(2), BB, 2 R, 2 RBI. BA= .257. Ramos drove in the Giants first run in the 2'nd inning with a double. He then tied the game in the 6'th with a 2-run HR, his second long ball in 2 days. It looks like Heliot put the 2-day benching to good use.
Drew Gilbert CF- 2 for 5, RBI. BA= .250. Two good games in a row for Gilbert who has an opportunity with Harrison Bader and Jared Oliva on the IL.
Adrian Houser RHP- 5.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 9/4 GO/AO. ERA= 5.40. Houser pulled it together after falling behind 5-1 by the end of 3 innings. It seems Tony Vitello's philosophy of managing starting pitchers is to get the pitches out of them at the risk of more add-on runs by the opposition.
Ryan Walker RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.00. Walker partly redeemed himself after blowing the Save by holding the line in the 10'th inning. It would be better for everyone if it didn't go to extra-innings, though.
Caleb Kilian RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.90. Like for instance if Kilian pitched the 9'th, not only would it have saved extra innings but he would have only pitched one inning.
The Win improved the Giants record to 9-12. They gained a game on both the Dodgers and the Wild Card and now 6.5 games behind in the NL West and 3.5 games in the Wild Card race.
Robbie Ray LHP tries to give the Giants a winning record for the road trip tomorrow facing Miles Mikolas RHP.
While on vacation in Japan I took in an NPB game and the way the starting pitchers were managed reminded me of how MLB looked a generation ago. The starter was in and out of trouble, partially his doing and partially due to poor defense, but he wasn’t pulled at the first sign of trouble and he wasn’t pulled after X number of pitches. I kept on expecting the manager to march out to the mound but he allowed the pitcher to work his way out of trouble and in the end he would have earned a Quality Start, if that stat is even recognized in Japan. If that is also Tony V’s management style then I like it- letting pitchers learn how to get out of trouble and not being overly dependent on a bullpen that is itself somewhat suspect and liable to let the game get out of hand anyway.
ReplyDeleteDusty Baker managed that way. It also conserves the bullpen.
DeleteMMorning Doc. Damn that was a nail biting, but fun game to watch.
ReplyDeleteLoved how Vitello allowed and a I do mean allowed Walker to go out for a second.inning > very gutsy nervy call >early yet but Vitello showing his mettle.
Also for all the things Adames does to keep the team smiling that play in extra innings jumping over the runner sliding into second and getting the throw off to Devers for the out at first >fantastic play >had to fire the boys up on the field and in the dugout.
Got my fingers crossed for Robbie not to bust upen the seat of his pants today and get the Giants a road sweep.

Up one game, down the next
DeleteKilian has my vote for closer until proven different. Bob in Dixon
ReplyDeleteThat was a pretty gutsy win. A few weeks ago the team would have folded the tent and got the circus back on the road. PH
ReplyDeleteKillian is a keeper as might be Drew Gilbert. This is exactly what I want to see from the kids!!!
ReplyDeletemany meaningful contributors and i will mention just one as Kilian has been a smart reunion with the Giants org and while some see him as a closer candidate, i would love to see him stretch out to serve as a spot starter. very impressed so far! -es
