Game Wrap 4/5/2026: Mets 5 Giants 2

Logan Webb stood in the gap for 7 innings and looked like he might pull off a series split, but a familiar combination of poor run support and a bullpen failure doomed his effort.  Key Lines:

Matt Chapman 3B- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .237.  Chapman had by far the best day at the plate for the Giants lineup.  He did skip a throw to first that Devers whiffed on and was charged with an error, but it did not lead to any unearned runs.

Logan Webb RHP- 7 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, 12/2 GO/AO.  ERA= 5.00.  Classic Webb Gem.  Tony Vitello got himself thrown out of the game apparently because he wanted out, but if anyone deserved to go off on the rest of the team in the clubhouse it was Webb.  How much more of this does he have to endure?

Keaton Winn RHP- 0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 6.23.  After looking unhittable on 3/30 in San Diego, Winn has been bad his last two appearances.  Apparently not ready for prime time.

Erik Miller LHP- 0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 12.00.  Ditto Keaton Winn.

The Loss drops the Giants record to 3-7 and into last place in the NL West, 4.5 games behind the Dodgers and 2 games behind the second place D'Backs.

It doesn't get any easier as the Giants start a series at home against the Phillies with Adrian Houser RHP facing the latest ace pitching prospect, Andrew Painter RHP in game 1 tomorrow evening.

  1. Right now this has all the looks of a 90-loss team. If trends continue, I'd look to get a haul for Logan Webb at the deadline.

    1. Can’t disagree. I was thinking Webb and possibly Chapman ask for trades (not sure if Chapman’s contract + performance is tradable, but he probably wants to play for a winner and not be part of this train wreck). Unfortunately, we are stuck with Adames, Devers, and Lee. Things just aren’t looking good longterm.

  2. Right side of the infield defense has been atrocious.

  3. Tony V finally showed some passion and I think it was a great time to get his first ejection! Bullpen is going to be a problem all year but the bats will eventually come alive. I hope it isn’t too late and as the old saying goes, you can’t win a championship in April but you can sure as hell lose one. Maybe it’s time to lower expectations and let things play out. Giants Baseball….. nothing like it 🤣

    1. I thought he looked kind of ridiculous out there as did Kruk and Kuip.

    2. Sometimes you need to do stuff like that to fire up the team and show you have some emotions. Maybe it wasnt the best time to do that but I thought the call was crap and Tony had the best view from the dugout.

    3. I mean, the ump made the right call.

  4. Totally understand the gloom and doom, its hard to watch, but I want to see how the season plays out and see where they stand at each quarter of the season before drawing any conclusions on the team. We've only played 10 games. Opening schedule Yankees, Padres, Mets, phillies have done them no favors. Mahle and Houser will be solid SPs, but the Giants philosophy of not wanting to spend on high end pitching needs to change if they want to win another championship. It bothered me when Dusty Baker said Framber Valdez would be great, but he's too expensive. Hope the Giants turn it around against the Phils.i think I saw someone say if the Giants finish way below 500 record, Buster would resign. let's hope not after only 2 years on the job.

    1. I hear what you are saying, LG, but the people who are saying it's too early to be alarmed are ignoring two things: 1. The futility of this position-player core is not new. What we see now is a continuation of last season where we saw long stretches where they didn't hit at all. 2. This is not just a bad start. It's an historically bad start. Through 9 games they have the worst run differential since 1896.

  5. What a gutty performance at LOGAN Webb!! askign for a friend, how much can the Giants get for him in a trade??

Same old script that will play all year....Only 1 of the core inconsistent vets hits...horrible OF..horrible bullpen...none a surprise...I LOVE Buster but soo much lays at his and GMZM's feet.

  6. Greg Johnson can't hide anymore, blame starts and ends with ownership. They're gonna get dragged kicking and screaming into rebuild at this point. Posey is being cuffed by Greg Johnson as he is the one holding the checkbook.

    1. This is my feeling as well. Doesn’t matter who is the GM or manager until they realize they need to rebuild. Sad thing is they probably will never let it happen and will continue to churn front office and managers blaming them instead of their own strategy of not wanting to ever rebuild. There may never be a better time than now either with a stacked farm with more offensive prospects than ever that will be ready to contribute in 2-3 years.

    2. The San Francisco Giants are owned by San Francisco Baseball Associates LLC, a partnership led by principal owner and Chairman Greg Johnson.
The Johnson family has been part of the group since 1993.
The Johnsons hold the largest stake, but less than 30%.
The group has roughly 30 other partners, including Buster Posey.
Larry Baer is the team's president.

    3. For the umpteenth time, the amount of money ownership is willing to spend is not the problem here. The Giants have a baseball decision making problem.

    4. Very true, money never solves the problem, a concrete plan is what they need. I feel Greg is too distracted with real estate. I think on May 1 if things aren't any better, bring up Eldridge and Gilbert with long leashes.

    5. Agree that they need a better plan, either go all in or rebuild. Why sign all those big free agents last year and make conservative moves this year I think the baseball decisions have improved under Buster, although this is only year 2 . FZ made good decisions but some bad ones too that they are still paying for. The big problem is the farm system hasn't produced good mlb starting players. So Buster had to sign big free agent like Adames, since the system had no Shortstops coming up

    6. Somehow the expensive triumvirate of Chapman, Adames and Devers is less than the sum of its parts.

    7. Buster is all in, but just because you are all-in doesn’t mean you throw money and resources at the wrong players. Posey is waiting for the right player. When you throw money at the wrong players in the name of going “all-in”, that’s how things go wrong.

    8. Agree Doc good mlb hitters can struggle against good mlb pitchers but they shouldn't look totally helpless against them

    9. "...Buster is waiting for the right player."? He signed 3 very big, very long term contracts who aren't getting the job done and now you say he's waiting for the right player?

  8. Sorry to add to the drama, but James Tibbs is about to be a star… for the Dodgers and we have a power hitting lefty who isn’t hitting with a long loopy swing that can’t play defense to show for it. Kyle Harrison and Luis Matos both factored into yesterday’s win for the BrewCrew too… yikes.

    1. Not convinced on Tibbs. The PCL can cover up a lot of faults in a hitter. Extremely SSS on Matos with the Brewers and not great at that. Seemed like the Giants might have given up on Harrison too soon but reasonable to give up for an established middle-order bat. To me the problem with Devers isn't so much who the Giants gave up but who they got.

    2. DOC..I'm with you on Tibbs and Matos/Harrison..But where I TRY to disagree is on DEVERS.. For 4 years from 221-2024 this guy was consistent every year hitting .280 with over 30 HRs and and OBP of .350. And he was on the same path with Boston last year. Then..Boom..he comes to SF and THBFTTT!!!.. Why? Is it the FAT contract? Playing In SF? The offense around him and the ball park? I have zero clue. My problem with the DEVERS trade was the likely logjam if ELDRIDGE ever becomed a MLB power broker to go along with CHAPMAN at 3B. But that time is nowhere near now.. So.....I don't know..My heart says DEVERS will find he way back..my head and my eyes? not so much...What a mess

    3. If you have a chance to get a bitter like Devers. Gotta pull the trigger. Harrison. May be a case of going to a team like the Brewers who are good at developing pitchers.
