Game Wrap 4/16/2026: Giants 3 Reds 0

We may well look back on this game in the future as the game Landen Roupp established himself as he ace of the staff, The Stopper.  Roupp matched goose eggs with a very talented but inexperienced Chase Burns RHP for 6 innings.  The lineup finally put together a 3-run rally in the 7'th in time for him to record the well-earned W and break the Giants losing streak.  Key Lines:

Matt Chapman 3B- 1 for 4, 2B, R, RBI.  BA= .270.  Aside from a couple of less-than-perfect throws a couple of weeks ago, Chapman has played up to expectations and is not a reason why the team is off to this abysmal start.

Jung Hoo Lee RF- 3 for 4, R, RBI.  BA= .246.  Lee seems to have rediscovered the art of hitting line drives and using all fields.  He is batting .370 over his last 7 games and .288 over his last 15.  Most of that lifting came in his last 6 games 4 of which were multi-hit.

Landen Roupp RHP- 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.38.  Roupp was masterful and did not allow his first hit until the 6'th inning.  He he followed the hit with a HBP putting runners at first and second with no outs but got out of it with a K and GIDP.

Ryan Walker RHP(3.86), Keaton Winn RHP(3.24) and Erik Miller LHP(6.00) finished up with a scoreless, hitless inning each.  They recorded 6 K's over the final 3 frames.  Miller recorded his first Save.  Both benches cleared for a standoff between the mound and home plate after Sal Stewart 1B took exception to Miller's celebration on the mound.

With the Win, the Giants fell behind the White Sox in the race for worst record in MLB.  they are tied with 5 other teams at 7-12. They remain tied with the Rockies for last place in the NL West but gained a half game in the Wild Card standings and trail by 4 games.

The Giants start the final leg of their 10-game road trip in Washington today with Logan Webb RHP trying to regain his form against Not-Forever Giant Zack Littell RHP.

While it was a nice win, the lineup continued to under-perform as they managed just two hits in 6 innings off the Reds starter, Burns, and scored all 3 of their runs and recorded half their hits in one inning after he left the game.

  1. I think or at least hope Logan Webb Will have something to say about who the Giants Ace will be for the next 3-4 years. If not and Webb is or will wear down, the Giants future is in even worse shape than I thought. All that said, I have always liked ROUPP and his mix of pitches and it's great to see him finding consistency. Maybe another kid will b able to do it in the next few years if they get the chance. But back to the present, I really hope Webb starts finding himself TODAY!!!

In any event, great pitching from ROUPP and the bullpen. Need that every game with he Giants lineup even if a few guys are showing signs. And hopefully the little sksirmishes and MILLERs pitching and reactions spurs something on. Maybe he can be the Drew Gilbert of the pitching staff.

  2. A couple of other things that confirm Ace of the Staff, The Stopper: Roupp's W's book-ended this latest losing streak as well as ending the Opening Day's three-game skid.
With Webb and Ray scheduled to book-end the Nationals, if the Giants can win the middle game with Houser's first W, they'll finish this 9-game trip with a 5-4 record.

  3. A lot of the Giants' "amateur owners" want the actual ownership to open up their wallets and spend more, like the Mets do.
Be careful what you wish for: as of 1:55 today, the Mets are ½ game behind the Giants in the National League standings, although they spend nearly twice as much ($370M to $200M in 2026 Fangraphs' Payroll Projection). Last year the Mets finished 2 games ahead of the Giants in 2025 spending $155M more.
Of course, Buster can spend smarter.

  4. The Giants "promised" Arraez he could play 2b. That has worked out fairly well, Arraez makes the necessary plays and looks pretty good.
They also want Devers to play 1B. That is not OK.
Is there a point to DHing Schmitt and watching balls pop out of Devers' glove?
