Three-run home runs are very good for the team that's hitting them. Heliot Ramos came up in the second inning with two runners on base and made the most of the opportunity with a shot over the center field wall to start a 6-run rally. The Giants kept adding on to win going away. Key Lines:
Willy Adames SS- 2 for 5, 2B, 2 R. BA= .269. Adames was back in the leadoff spot and continued his strong start to the season. His 10 doubles are tied for the MLB lead.
Luis Arraez 2B- 2 for 5, R. BA= .319. Arraez also made some not-so-easy plays at 2B. He's doing what the Giants signed him to do.
Matt Chapman 3B- 3 for 5, R, 3 RBI. BA= .291. I think it's safe to say Chapman's down year last season was due to the hand injury. He did make another throwing error giving him 4 on the season which might be karma for going off on Casey Schmitt for not catching the ball.
Rafael Devers 1B- 1 for 5, R, 3 K's. BA= .215. Devers is still struggling at the plate and he also dropped the back end of a potential GIDP which extended the inning for Logan Webb running up his pitch count. For some reason, Devers was not charged with an error.
Casey Schmitt DH- 2 for 5, HR(2), 2 R, RBI. BA= .315. Mighty Casey continues to be the Giants best all-around hitter.
Heliot Ramos LF- 1 for 4, HR(1), BB, R, 3 RBI. BA= .232. Heliot said he worked with the batting coaches to not pull off the ball while sitting out the last two games in Cincinnati. It looks like that work paid off. Hopefully the HR is the first of many more.
Daniel Susac C- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .524. Susac did not figure in the scoring but continues to swing a hot bat. He appears to be the de-facto starting catcher at this point.
Drew Gilbert CF- 1 for 3, HR(1), BB, 2 R, RBI. BA= .143. Harrison Bader's injury is Drew Gilbert's opportunity. Is it just me or does Gilbert seems a little calmer this season?
Logan Webb RHP- 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 6 K's, 10/1 GO/AO. ERA= 5.40. It looked like Devers drop at 1B prevented an inning-ending GIDP but he was not charged with an error so maybe the scorer thought the throw was late anyway. A run scored on the play and Webb expended more pitches while walking the next batter. He finally got CJ Abrams on a groundout on the 4'th pitch of his AB. Webb again fell short of a Quality Start.
Caleb Killian RHP(1.13) and Blade Tidwell RHP(2.25) held the Nationals scoreless over the last two frames.
The Giants improved their record to 8-12. They did not gain on the first place Dodgers or in the Wild Card race but there are now 7 teams with worse records in MLB.
Adrian Houser RHP tries to extend the winning ways today facing Cade Cavalli RHP.
Few comments:
ReplyDelete1. You’re right on Arraez - he seems more agile and competent at second than advertised! Our gain!
2. Gilbert indeed seems more mature and less like an annoying little brother this year.
3. Devers is a complete disaster at first base. If Schmitt is in the lineup at DH anyway, I think it’s time to let him play first some more. If this was a tight game, Devers’ mistakes could have doomed us. Good or even decent First baseman should help limit throwing errors, but Devers is increasing them and multiple of Chapmans “throwing errors” are gobbled up by a competent defender there.

After Chapman's throwing error, FP Santangelo mentioned on the radio that he thinks both Chapman and Adames are tightening up on some throws because they are trying to make the throw perfect, whereas with a 1B who can pick it, they know they can heave it in their general direction, and the 1B can dig it out, he cited J.T. Snow and Brandon Belt as examples.
DeleteThat is the "typical" scoring, the 1Bman does not get an error if an out is called at second and the throw to first is not caught.
ReplyDeleteIt is NOT the rule and is up to the official scorer.
It is wrong and punishes the pitcher instead of the player in the field..
This cost Webb a QS improperly.
Devers is lost in the field but SF management is playing up to him, presumably to make him happy.
Drew Gilbert is like that super hyper child that gets diagnosed with ADD and becomes a brand new calm person after starting the prescription meds. It’s like Drew was diagnosed with ADD over the off-season and now we are seeing what he’s like on his medication
ReplyDeleteI'm honestly not sure if I maybe should have hit the button on this one.
DeleteIt’s ok doc. Some people are just ignorant. He wasn’t trying to be disrespectful, he just doesn’t know what he is saying is hurtful to a dad of a kid with ADHD. I would rather him be told it is not ok to slap a diagnosis on someone and learn that lesson than in public so others can learn too.
