Game Wrap 8/27/2025: Giants 12 Cubs 3

Carson Whisenhunt overcame a 2'nd inning 3-run home run to go 5 innings and the lineup picked him with a 12 run outburst.  Key Lines:

Heliot Ramos LF- 2 for 4, HR(16), HBP, 3 R, RBI.  BA= .266.  Ramos giveth and taketh.  He made a throwing error which did not cause any unearned runs but he had another solid game at the plate.  I especially liked what happened after he was HBP by former Giant Taylor Rogers LHP.  First, he scored ahead of Devers' second HR then he came up again in the 8'th inning and homered albeit off a position player.  Take that!

Rafael Devers DH- 4 for 4, 2B, 2 HR(27), BB, 4 R, 5 RBI.  BA= .258.  Have a night!  Whoa!  Devers just went off!  I am starting to get excited by the possibility of next season.

Dominic Smith 1B- 1 for 4, SF, R, RBI.  BA= .277.  Adames and Smith had B2B SF's in the third inning to retake the lead at 4-3 after Whiz gave up the 3-run bomb in the second inning.

Matt Chapman 3B- 3 for 4, HR(18), 2 R, 2 RBI.  BA= .234.  Chapman homered in the 7'th, a line shot into the emergency exit down the LF line.  Christian Koss PH for him in the 9'th. I assume that was just to get him out of there a tad early in a blowout win.

Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.01.  Whisenhunt has great looking stuff.  He battled inconsistent command and traffic on the basepaths and made a rookie mistake by grooving a fastball down the pipe with 2 outs and an open base but settled down to complete 5 innings and get credit for the W.  Hopefully this is all a learning experience for him and speed his development.

Joel Peguero RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  Love the easy heat.  Kruk and Kuip mentioned he worked hard to develop and changeup which gives him another pitch, particularly against lefty batters.

Giants try for a sweep tomorrow afternoon with Logan Webb RHP toeing the rubber against Shota Imanaga LHP who comes in with an ERA of 3.03.

  1. As much as I liked Ramos’ at bats as you did, Ramos actually homered off backup catcher Reese McGuire…

For anyone who didn’t watch the game, go find two amazing highlights (a web gem and a once per decade type of mishap):

    1. Whisenhunt got a chunk of glove on a hard hit ground ball, which redirected to Adames going hard to his left. He still managed to flick it to Schmitt who threw on to first for an epic web gem DP.

    2. On a bloop single to RF, the Throw from right field hit Chapman square in the top of the helmet as he stood on first, ricocheted over the catcher to the backstop and allowed another run to score. Even Chapman in the dugout was explaining what had happened and eyebrows were raised in confusion at how outlandish it was!

    1. Yeah, the old 1-6-4-3 Double play!

Funny thing is, earlier in the game they ran a highlight of a very, very unique Double Play that happened two years ago, 8/27/23, against the Braves: 3-1-4-2

J.D. Davis (1B) ranging far to his right, tosses to Scott Alexander (Pitcher) who had broken towards first, who then tossed to Estrada (2B, covering 1st). Estrada then fired to Bailey (Catcher) to catch the runner breaking home from 3rd.

      Outs at 1st, then home.

The 3-1-4 part, Davis to Alexander to Estrada (covering 1B) for the first out, was something I've never seen.

  2. Another fun game to watch, both offensively and defensively (except for the Ramos flub). What are the Giants going to do with him in the field?

  3. They're getting hot right now. Only 30 games to go, but they're only 7 games out of the wild card. Not counting on it but, ya never know.

  4. I was at the game. What a fun game to go to. No one knew what happened when the ball went off of Chapman's head, we all laughed when we saw the replay. Watching the home runs live was epic.
