Whoo boy! These are getting mighty hard to write up. The Giants put on another show of futility against a pitcher who came in with an ERA of 7.11 while Robbie Ray put up a valiant effort but gave up one too many runs for a Quality Start. Key Lines:
Casey Schmitt 2B- 4 for 5, 2B. BA= .254. Since we are down to looking for rays of hope for next season, it's a pleasure to watch how much Casey Schmitt has matured at the plate since he first came up as a wild, swing-at-everything rookie. He AB's tonight were all high quality and he used the whole field. He should be the presumptive starting 2B on Opening Day next season.
Wilmer Flores DH- 2 for 4. BA= .249. Wilmer was part of a sequence that was a microcosm of the season. He led off the 6'th inning with a single. Chapman walked and Jung Hoo Lee lined out sharply to Fernando Tatis RF. Dominic Smith singled through the right-side hole. Wilmer stopped at 3B because he is slow and Tatis has a cannon. He would have been out by a mile at home but you knew it didn't matter because he wasn't going to score. Patrick Bailey C and Heliot Ramos LF both popped out to end the threat.
Robbie Ray LHP- 6 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 2.98. Ray threw 60 pitches in the first two innings and ended up with 113. It was an heroic effort against one of the better lineups in MLB but was in vain.
Kai-Wei Teng RHP tries to build on the success of his last bulk-inning appearance tomorrow afternoon facing Nick Pivetta RHP who sports a 2.94 ERA.
If this homestand ends up being disasterous, I think Posey may need to line Mark Hallberg up to take over as interim manager. Melvin is starting to look like a manager who looks mentally checked out.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of the stranger Giants teams I've ever followed. Duane Kuiper said this morning on KNBR that on paper the Padres have the way better lineup then the Giants then pointed out the Padres have scored only 4 more runs then the Giants but the Padres come up with the clutch hit and the Giants don't . Buster needs to acquire more hitters who know how to put the ball in play to keep the line moving and drive in the RISP. I do believe that those transactions are coming in 2026.. It didn't surprise me it was reported the Giants inquired about trading for Isiah kiner Falefa. kuiper also said he thinks Devers is playing hurt. I'm wondering if the hand injury that kept Chapman out earlier is still bothering him.
ReplyDeleteI think when September comes around, Devers will likely be shut down for the year.
DeleteI am not sure if Devers is still playing hurt. He looked miserable out there for several weeks but lately has looked more comfortable and like he enjoys the game which coincides with better hitting. He's even made some fairly acrobatic plays at 1B with some "rookie" mistakes sprinkled in.
DeleteHave to agree that a lone bright spot was seeing Schmitt continue to show he’s a big leaguer. Hopefully he’s the real deal and 2nd base is locked down. The progress in his plate discipline feels noticeably better.
ReplyDeleteBench the stars for the rest of the season. They don’t deserve to play anymore and should be forced to watch from the bench as punishment for the embarrassing effort they’ve given. Doesn’t matter if we lose every game from here on out not like we have that much better chance with them in the lineup. Let the kids play and maybe we develop a few of them over the next month and a half while aiming for a top 5 pick in the draft next year.
ReplyDeleteYep, publicly embarrass your star players who are on long term contracts. That should do wonders for the clubhouse over the next 5 seasons.
DeleteThey’ve done a good enough job of embarrassing themselves I’m not worried that being benched is gonna make a difference. Spin it however you want, put them on the IL devers for his back and chapman for the hand. Work in rest days for Adames and Lee every 3 games. If you are worried about fragile ego’s dont be. There will be a new manager next year to turn the page with a fresh start and nobody will care about these last 6 weeks of the season by then!
DeleteThey should give Luciano one last chance.
ReplyDeleteNot this year….Luciano is hitting like .217 in extreme AAA. There’s no neee to give him a chance he doesn’t deserve a chance considering his extremely poor batting average.
DeleteThe Angels, Twins and Nationals all should be open for business this offseason after failing to generate interest in buying their franchises outright. With a strike looming in 2027, even more teams are likely to feel financial pressures to unload players. Buster showed in the Devers trade he has the guts to make bold moves ... he almost certainly will have some opportunities in the coming months.
