The Giants showed up and played a competitive game but weren't quite able to convert that effort into a win. Key Lines:
Willy Adames SS- 1 for 4, HR(19), BB, SB(5), 2 R, RBI. BA= .223. Looking at the video of the home run in slo mo, it looks like Adames front shoulder opening was less pronounced on the home run than recent looks.
Dominic Smith DH- 2 for 5, 2B, R, RBI. BA= .281. After an 0 for 4 broke his 15-game hit streak, Smith started another streak with 2 hits.
Christian Koss 2B/3B- 2 for 2, 2B, BB, HBP, 2 R, RBI. BA= .265. What do you do on an 0-2 count and the pitcher is throwing 100 mph fastballs at the knees on the outside corner? You go the other way and drive it down the line into the opposite-field corner. Koss reached base 4 times.
Landen Roupp RHP- 3 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.45. Roupp threw some good pitches but hung too many breaking balls and changeups and paid the price. He's already way above last years IP total.
Heliot Ramos LF and Rafael Devers 1B, the first two batters in the lineup had 7 K's between them and 7 of the team's 10 K's.
Matt Chapman was placed on the 10-day IL with wrist inflammation before the game. Casey Schmitt left the game after a HBP on the forearm. X-rays did not show a fracture and he is day-to-day.
Justin Verlander RHP tries bounce back from a disaster start this evening facing Adrian Houser RHP who shut the Giants down earlier this season when he pitched for the White Sox. He has a 7.59 ERA in 2 starts for the Rays.
Definitely they called up Roupp at least one start too early. He didn’t look that good during his lone AAA start so not surprised he didn’t look good in his first start back in the MLB

"What do you think is wrong" Coaching staff: "I have no idea". Time to change the staff.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Randy is allergic to the 9th
ReplyDeleteHindsight is always better, but Melvin could have — should have — been happy with 3 innings/ 3 earned runs out of Roupp.
ReplyDeleteSince his last SF start on July 22, he gave up 3 hits and 2 ER's in 3 innings 5 days ago with Sacramento.
Bases loaded. No outs in the 8th.

They’re not working counts. They don’t seem to have an approach at the plate.
At this point, and putting aside injury issues, one could make a credible argument that Christian Koss is a better baseball player than Matt Chapman.
ReplyDeleteHmm.....I think that's a bit of a stretch and I'm pretty sure Matt Chapman has been playing hurt since the original hand injury, but what I see with Christian Koss is a player who does all the small things well and doesn't give in at the plate.
DeleteHere's a wild idea.
ReplyDeleteJoe Panik was hired in 2023 as a Special Assistant!
Perhaps he might be a good Bench Coach > bring some of the Wild Series glory into the dressing room and the bench
Maybe at Ryan Vogelsong as one of the pitching coaches.
Am I digging?

I have no idea if Joe Panik would make a good bench coach or not. A good bench coach is the guy who knows the data inside and out and feeds it to the manager to assist in decisionmaking.
DeleteIf Schmitt needs an IL stint and Chapman likely to be shut down for the year, I'd like to see Thomas Gavello added to the 40-man and given a look in the majors instead of bringing back Wisely.
ReplyDeleteOn the plus side, when the Giants stranded those runners in the eighth inning, they earned their Black Belt.
