This game started out promising as Hayden Birdsong breezed through the first 2 innings and the lineup. gave him a 2-0 lead to work with in the second, but the the wheels started coming loose and fell off completely in the middle innings. Key Lines:
Willy Adames SS- 1 for 3, HR(10). BA= .211. Adames likes high hanging stuff and when he squares it up it goes a long way. He hit it to the same spot as Christian Koss on Monday, but this one was a couple of rows deep and the fan that interfered has been disinvited from the stadium for the rest of the season so no fan interference on this one. Speaking of Christian Koss, he was placed on the IL with a hammy strain suffered on the home run swing that was ruled a ground rule double. Luis Matos got the call up to replace him.
Daniel Johnson CF- 1 for 3, 2B. BA= .172. Johnson roped a double to the R-CF gap right after Adames HR. He alertly took 3B when nobody covered on the relay and scored on a ground out. Unfortunately that was the end of the Giants scoring for the night.
Hayden Birdsong RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 4.30. The first two innings were electric with Birdsong spotting his 97 MPH FB on the corners and getting swings and misses on breaking stuff out of the zone. He gave up an unearned run on walk, passed ball and single. He then went walk, walk HR to start the 4'th inning and the route was on.
Carson Seymour RHP- 3 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K's, 5/0 GO/AO. ERA= 4.50. You live by the sinker, you die by the sinker. Gotta keep those bad boys down at the knees. Two of the runs he gave up were unearned due to another passed ball by Bailey.
Landen Roupp RHP tries to get the Giants back on the winning track tonight facing longtime Giants nemesis Merrill Kelly RHP.
Not gonna waste my time watching this team. No accountability and no leadership from the players. Here comes another wasted season with this talent. Shameful and pathetic all around.
ReplyDeleteI'd shut down Birdsong until after the all-star break. I'd do a Bivens bullpen game the next time Birdsong's turn is up in the rotation. I want to save Whisenhunt for August/September when Roupp and Birdsong are nearing their innings limit. I also would like to see Matos get everyday reps in right while he's up and see if he's capable of replacing Yaz.
ReplyDeleteNot to look past the next 2 games in Arizona, but the respite that might have been the A's might not be a soft landing: A's have won 3 of 4 scoring 22 runs.
ReplyDeleteGiants have scored just 6 in their 4 games.
Then the stuff hits the fan with Philly and Los Dolares closing the first "half" at Oracle. If SF doesn't win 4 of those 11 (games 2 @ AZ, 3 @ A's, 3: PhPh 3, Bums 3), they will drop below .500!
Chapman to the rescue?
Google AI: "Manager Bob Melvin is hesitant to commit to a specific time frame until Chapman can resume baseball activities at full intensity."
Normally someone has to take the blame when a team goes off the rails.
ReplyDeleteFor the Giants, it won't be Bob Melvin: fellow former Catcher Buster Posey threw a safe at home plate to SF's skipper, picking up his option.
Perhaps no one gets the axe although another forever Giant in-and-around 3B may take the fall. Some thought Williams might succeed Melvin, but that won't happen, not this year and not next year and most likely not ever.
Time to rear it down? Do Verlander a favor and send him to Stros, who can use more SPs...do Yaxz a favor and send to a contender in need of LF OFer, give Matos extended look.
DeleteShana Rubin tweeted that Buster Posey took the blame for the rough patch, saying he's the one that set the roster. Good leadership in my opinion
DeleteI think that's OK for now but you can only say "my fault" so often before it starts to wear thin. What does Buster (potentially) do to hold himself accountable if they drop completely out of contention?
DeleteI can't believe how bad this team has fallen since Chapman got hurt. 7 wins and 13 losses. 5 wins and 13 loses the last 18 games. Horrible. Where is the hitting? The bats are stinking up the place. Pop up, ground out, strike out, rinse and repeat. Plus bad base running, and at times poor defense. This has been painful to watch.
ReplyDeleteI miss Harrison already...Devers will be an albatross...looks like he already is.
ReplyDeleteThis might be a reactionary take.
DeleteDidn't like the trade initially...we got a 1B coming; only part I liked was sending Hicks over there
DeleteNobody knows when Bryce Eldridge will be ready to face MLB pitching or how good he'll be when he is. What's the old saying? A bird in the hand...? If at some point they have to find space for both Devers and Eldridge it will be a good problem. On the other hand, it's a LONG contract and reduces future flexibility. By itself not a huge problem but when you add up Lee, Chapman, Adames and Devers they are locked into 4 major roster spots for a long time and right now it's not looking like they are going to get a net positive value out of that mix.
DeleteAt what point does the team become sellers at the trade deadline? 10 games out of the wildcard? Being in contention in the division isn’t realistic. Players that could be on the block are Ray, Flores, and Yaz. Not sure if Verlander has any trade value.
ReplyDeleteDenver in Fresno
10 games out of a postseason spot has always been my benchmark for throwing in the towel on the season.
DeleteAt one point in 2010 the Giants were 7.5 games out of a playoff spot.
DeleteWhat sort of pickups are available for the Giants now - whose bat needs replacing? Or are they just holding their breath waiting for Chapman to light the fuse?
ReplyDeleteIronically I think the Giants biggest trade deadline needs are going to be a mid-rotation SP and a Closer, or at least a high-leverage bulllpen arm.
DeleteI think when Posey picked up Melvin's option for 2026, it was a subliminal message to the players with the trade deadline looming: "Melvin's not the problem -- you are."
ReplyDeleteTowel throwing is premature.
ReplyDeleteThey are major leaguers mired in slumps. Streaks don't last for a year (except 2021), it will come around, stay above or near .500, and a win streak at the end will put you in.
If it's not too late.
Five, count 'em, 5 LHB in tonight's lineup. 2 of them below the Mendosa line.
ReplyDeleteDevers leads SF in B-AVG/OPS at .261/.868
Roupp has pitched well in June except for an early blowout in LA.
