PCL ballparks produce crazy boxscores. Grant McCray's HR was an inside-the-parker. McCray's batting line for June was .265/.311/.561 with 8 HR. In 8 games in July it's .375/.488/.594. The Giants cannot let this kid go without giving him at least one more legit shot at finding traction at the MLB level.
AA: Richmond Flying Squirrels edged out the Akron Rubber Ducks 2-1.
Carter Howell CF- 1 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .205.
Joe Whitman LHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 5.15.

Cade Vernon RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(5). ERA= 1.85.
All Giants affiliates in the complex leagues were idle.
Emeralds had a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the 9th, but the new pitcher, Liam Simon, walked the 5 batters he faced, getting just 3 strikes in the 23 pitches he threw.
ReplyDeleteAgree on McCray...in fact, bring him up now...make Lee 4th OF for awhile, or alternate with Yaz...let Matos prove himself further at AAA
ReplyDeletesmall sample but McCray just 4 Ks in 32 ABs + 8 BBs this month -- best relative performance on both of those. And to my tastes he's got the organization's best personality
ReplyDeleteIs Hunter Bishop out of "protection"?
ReplyDeleteDoes he become a Free Agent this year?
Can the Giants keep him by putting him on the roster, or, rather, would they?
Is it too little, too late?
Goodby to Farhan's very first draft pick — does anyone care?
Not sure but I think Hunter Bishop may be eligible for minor league free agency after this season. Yes, the Giants could make sure they keep him by adding him to the 40-man roster. Tough to see them having room for that. It's also tough to see how Bishop's skill set fits into future Giants plans. Both Matos and McCray have better all-around tools. Bishop does have more raw power but has never come close to tapping into it. I say chances are he never has a MLB career and if he does it will be with another team.
DeleteThe only "extra" on the 40-man is Johnson, and with the half dozen OFers the Giants have in Sacramento, he's probably the least "essential."
DeleteOTOH, if the Giants make a trade move this month, they do have some young OFers on the 40-man who have "some promise" they might "throw in" a deal. Of course we probably value them more than anyone else!
There are 5 OFers in Sacramento with near identical OPS:
ReplyDeleteLuciano .775 & 16 HRs (.226/.340/.435) PAs 359
McCray .773 & 12 HRs (.263/.336/.437) PAs 402
Meckler .773 & 0 HRs (.300/.402/.371) PAs 165
Bishop .771 & 6 HRs (.262/.328/.443) PAs 266
Matos .770 & 3 HRs (.272/.326/.444) PAs 89
Might add 2 with better OPS:
Encarnción 1.160 & 2 HRs (.348/.464/.696) PAs 28
Johnson .892 & 7 HRs (.293/.331/.561) PAs 130
All but Bishop are on the 40-Man Roster
