I was all set to write a post about how much I disagreed with Kap pulling Gausman after 7 innings, then read it was a mutual decision and his hand was cramping up. Nevermind. It came down to lack of hitting by the Giants and great pitching by the Padres. On any given day, Musgrove can pitch a no-hitter and his stuff was that good yesterday. Giants just have to get it done today and give Gausman a chance to do this thing in the postseason because he was really really good too.

Who thought it was better to play Milwaukee the last 3 games than San Diego?
ReplyDeleteMy problem was that he went with Littell in the 8th inning. Why not stick with Rogers for the 8th and Doval in the 9th? Just seems like a no-brainer to me. I also feel that the Watson injury might be one that comes back to bite us. Hopefully Webb can clamp things down on today's game and our offense can show up. Go Giants!
ReplyDeleteGiants should win if Webb treats this start as just another game. I wonder if whichever team wins the division will have anything left for the NLDS. I remember the Braves losing to Philly in the 1993 playoffs after the epic pennant race with the Giants. Heard talk that the Braves played like they were out of gas.
ReplyDelete70 years ago today, October 3, 1951, Bobby Thomson's 9th inning HR won the pennant for the Giants, dropping the Dodgers to 2nd Place for the first time since mid-May.
ReplyDeleteI was listening to the radio after school with neighborhood friends — in Florida we'd get home early enough to catch the end of games. My "friends" were Yankee fans who wanted Brooklyn to win because they thought the Dodgers would be easier to beat in the World Series. After all, it was 4 years until the Dodgers won their first WS.
I "hated" the Dodgers even then — I was born a Cardinal fan (parents from St Louis) and the Dodgers beat up on "us" a lot — of course I was for the Giants, and I ran outside whooping it up. One of the boys came out to tell me it was foul which stopped my yelps momentarily. I was only 11 but I wasn't that stupid.
I remember one other game from 1951 (after school radio on Mutual Broadcasting Game of the Day, every day): Red Sox-White Sox, bottom of the 9th, Chicago up 1 run, Ted Williams leading off the inning. Chicago moved their pitcher to 3B and brought in lefty Billy Pierce to pitch to Williams who had homered earlier. Pierce got him and left the game, restoring the pitcher from 3rd. Red Sox tied the game anyway but lost it in extra innings.
What a difference 70 years makes! Now you can watch any game, every day, on your phone!
