The Giants fell behind the Rockies early and got blown out in the 8'th inning just as it looked like they might make a game of it. Key Lines:
Mac Williamson LF- 2 for 3, 2B. BA= .250. Giants accumulated 12 hits on the day, but Mac was the only one with more than one. One of them was a 2-bagger to boot.
Dereck Rodriguez RHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.86. DRod threw well reportedly reaching 94 on the radar gun. He is coming along nicely in his quest to hang onto his rotation spot. That might still not be enough because options.

I think that sending Rodriguez down, at this point, might damage his development. No reason Pomeranz needs to be on this team if everybody else is pitching and he is not. Bum/Shark/Holland/D-Rod/Strat is a good rotation with the weakest link going to the pen should Cueto be available this season. Suarez could probably use some more seasoning. And this isn't even taking into account if Beede is truly for real, at this point. A nice problem to have. Better without Pom.
ReplyDeleteIf the Dodgers handling of their pitching the last couple of years is any indication, expect anyone with an option to be sent down then a lot of DL stints for Giants pitchers in 2019.
DeleteGiants might be "Better without Pom" but they may want to get his arm in shape beyond 2 outings before deciding and wasting the $1,500,000 contract.
DeleteSomeone commented that Pomeranz pitched better than his stat line looked in his last start.
DeleteZiPS doesn't have much hope for the Giants, they project "Rule 5 draftee Drew Ferguson to be arguably the best outfielder on the team"!
ReplyDeleteIt gets worse from there: "the projections give absolutely none of the team’s current group a chance to have much of an upside."
How much would Harper have helped? Not much without a lot of health luck for their geriatric bunch.
Aside for wanting an extra $20,000,000 (over Philadelphia) to pay California taxes, you have to think talking to SF and LA was an attempt to squeeze more green from the Phillie Philanthropist.
Given Harper's ego (he wanted the biggest and bestest contract, who's to say he would have challenged his HOF creds playing in a park that penalizes rather than amplifies his power?
Outfield aside, since a good D could be cobbled together by the Giants that might not be too embarrassing, 2019 hinges so much more on the health and rebound of the Big 5 AND credible starting pitching which probably equates in probability for $350,000,000 being a good contract for a Giant Harper.
Even if SF had gone that high, Philadelphia was in a position to go higher (relative to their CBT if that was a factor) -- and Harper was the KEY to making them super competitive NOW. Many stars must align for the Giants to be in the mix for the next few years, then the system has to spit out some new stars.
The Phillies will be very lucky if Harper doesn't peak in a few years -- if he hasn't already. Look at Ralph Kiner. That was a different era but they are (other than RH/LH) somewhat similar. Had Kiner not lost 2.5 years to WWII, he would have been "career-wise" similar to Harper at 27, then kerplunk! Still may the HOF, though.
The Giants will thank whatever deity is left in SF when Harper hits the DL running out a ground ball.
