Spring Training Game Wrap 3/18/2019: Giants 5 White Sox 2

A 2-run dinger in the first inning by Yonder Alonso accounted for the only runs allowed by Giants pitching.  Their spotty hitting was enough to give them the win against the ChiSox at Camelback Ranch.  Key Lines:

Steven Duggar CF- 2 for 3.  BA= .344.  Dugger's bat has really caught fire.  Today it paid off with an announcement that he will be the CF on Opening Day.  Woo Hoo!  Congrats to Steven Duggar with hopes and wishes for a terrific season.

Mac Williamson LF- 1 for 4.  BA= .256.  Mac seems to be hitting just enough to give him the inside track for the starting LF gig, but there's still noise about acquiring another OF before the season starts.  Watch those waiver wires!

Gerardo Parra RF- 0 for 2, Assist(3B).  BA= .257.  Parra seems to be the favorite to win the starting RF job.  If he does, it might be on the strength of his left arm which apparently is reminiscent of Melky Cabrera's except Parra is a bit faster and can cover RF in AT&T.  Hey, if he can flag down drive in Triples Alley and gun down runners trying to take 3B, I'll take whatever he can hit.

Tyler Beede RHP- 2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.10.  The ERA is not really indicative of how Beede has pitched this spring.   He reportedly looked strong again today in spite of Alonso taking him  deep to the opposite field.

Travis Bergen LHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  This outing has to all but sew up a roster spot for Bergen who would have to be offered back to the BJ's if it doesn't.   No way is Farhan letting this find go!

Ty Blach LHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 3.09.  I'm hoping Blach makes the roster too.   Can't have too many lefties on the staff in a division with the Dodgers and Rockies leaning so far left.

Reyes Moronta RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.80.  There has been talk of Moronta being optioned to make room for a pitcher who doesn't.  Reyes ain't havin' it!

Trevor Gott RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(2).  ERA= 0.00.  Bochy is sure acting like he's auditioning Gott to be the Closer, 2 Saves and another game finished that ended in a tie, all with a zero ERA.  I don't see how Mark Melancon starts the season on the active roster even if the Giants carry 8 relievers.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants get tomorrow off, then play split squad games on Wednesday with Drew Pomeranz scheduled to pitch.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants reassigned IF Levi Michael and OF Mike Gerber to minor league camp.  Gotta say, it seems like Gerber is getting the bad end of a raw deal here as he has clearly outplayed Maybin and Ferguson the other contenders for reserve OF who can play CF.  Maybe the Giants are diggin' his D in CF?

Anyone have the word on why Derek Holland didn't make his scheduled start today?

  1. I wouldn't be shocked if they weren't trying to get one last look at Beede (as a starter) before sending him out. Perhaps didn't want to mess with the rotation this close to the regular season. Pomeranz starts next. Wouldn't be shocked to see Holland relieving him in the fourth or later.

    1. I think the Giants idea was to try to tame his command problems, but they ended up robbing him of his best stuff. Definitely a change in pitching philosophy here, probably for the better.

  2. Wasn't Holland pitching at the Minor League camp?

  3. Holland allegedly pitched in the AAA game at the minor league camp.

  4. Big Dan Slania and Wander Franco GONE.
Guess you need more than 6'5", 275#.
The Maybin/Ferguson decision may wait until Farhan makes his last gasp waiver/trade move. Might as well, Ferguson may yet prove that speed burns, especially in spacious Oracle on D.
Yesterday he walked to lead off the 9th, stole 2nd with no outs, ready to manufacture a run without a hit, Giant style?
White Sox were not having it and eventually walked him home.
That speed must be something and if he's just a defensive replacement for a while, why not? Is Maybin going to make a difference?
Most likely, no one will pick up Maybin if they have agreed to let him go if he doesn't make the 25. He still would have a fair chance to get called up from Sac, although Gerber may go down with attitude and prove his Spring was no fluke! He's the one who earned it.

    1. Which Wander Franco? This brings to mind the time when the Giants had two Matt Williams in the system, a catcher and a third baseman. When the Giants decided to waive Matt the catcher, the writer for the Chronicles wrote that the Giants were extremely careful with the paperwork.

    2. I still can't believe Gerber got sent down. Between Ferguson and Maybin, please keep Ferguson -- everyone knows Maybin's ceiling, he's just an average player on a series of losing teams.

    1. Wouldn’t be shocked. That would be a way for Zaidi to make a statement.

    2. Some don't buy Melancon is bad or should be released. See this tweet by a respected blogger:

      GPT@giantsprospects:

If he is this bad going forward, then he can be released. And the cost would be the possibility of losing Stratton or Gott on waivers. Not a big price to pay. If Melancon stays healthy and pitches like he did last year, Giants have a good low-middle leverage reliever.

Throwing away a possibly good RP to hang onto to Stratton (who might clear waivers)? 28M is a sunk cost & unmovable, without taking back bad $, no matter how good he is. So it comes down to is he better than Stratton/Gott? IMO, yes.

If DL is possible to iron out the wrinkles, just about everyone likes that -- has anyone asked Melancon?

    3. Giants released INF Wander Javier Franco (24.3Y). A 2012 IFA signing by KCR out of D.R. He was a MiLB Rule 5 pick in the 2017 offseason. An everyday player in SJ in 2018, led the team in hits, made the All-Star team. Older brother of Wander Alexander Franco, a Giants prospect.

    4. I would have no problem, at this point, with Melancon being shown the door. He's been given ample opportunity. Why wait until he's blowing games that actually mean something?

  6. Melancon better than Stratton or Gott? I can't find many that agree with that opinion. Stratton is more versatile plus makes a good trade chip for that special RH hitting OF we're waiting for. Gott is getting people out quite regularly whereas Melancon is...ah...enjoying that one good 3 pitch 3 up/3 down inning...all the rest seem like 4.0+ WHIP this spring.

  7. Someone will be traded or Zaidi left his touch in LA.
Giants have a surplus of pitching both starters and relievers.
Giants have a big OF deficiency especially from the RH hitting side.
Zaidi will find a trade even if it's for Strangeglove Castellanos who in the field makes Pat Burrell and Mike Morse look like gold glovers. But it would "relieve" several RH problems: a power righty hitter to start with a good defensive late inning replacement in Ferguson (hang on to him for a while) for one (2?) of the 3 relievers that the Giants will lose after this year (Smith, Vincert, and Watson with an opt out) and/or Dyson who is last year arb eligible next year starting from $5M.
Solarte who has twice-over earned a spot but is a FA next year is a "cheap" candidate to trade high (relatively with an excellent ST) then SF can keep on-the-cusp Sandoval and Hanson cheaply with a little RH power.
Even starters: Stratton without an option is sort-of tradeable, but so is everyone else and a couple would be possible mega-trades although would they consider Bum for something really special, considering the Giant hole in the OF? Drod is special, too, but the rest?
Pack your bags, hold on to your hats, there will be some new former Giants in the next week!

    1. Castellanos? Although MCChron seems to want him, fangraphs says: "this future DH (he’s dreadful in the field) should be aggressively shopped by the Tigers front office while value remains high and other teams convince themselves he can fake a corner outfield spot."
      Fake a corner? LOL
Fortunately (or hopefully), his value to someone else is much higher than to the Giants if they have to give up more than a fair prospect -- not anyone in MLB's Top 30 Giants or in the more valuable DrB's top 50.
No one has called Zaidi stupid.
      Yet..

    2. Thought was Giants needed RH batting OFer who could bang it.
So they signed Matthew Joyce: Bats left, some power in 2017 but not much over his career, low average, poor fielder
      Go figure.

  8. Giants optioned Beede and Black to Sacramento yesterday. Hope all goes well and both will be reappearing later this season.

  9. Farhan takes another head first dive into the dumpster and comes up with.... Matt Joyce!?! I’m calling Farhans next acquisition right now and the next .200 hitting OF to grace this dumpster of a roster will be Adam Duval as soon as Atlanta cuts him loose by the end of the week.

    1. Yeah, Matt Joyce? Gotta say, so far Farhan's acquisitions have been mostly guys he's familiar with from Oakland and LA. As far as strategy goes, it's hard to see anything beyond boilerplate Moneyball. I'm still waiting to see a move that impresses me or that tells me he's an upgrade over Bobby Evans.

  10. Giants have the clubs out tonight. Absolutely bludgeoning the Indians. 13-0, so far. Great all round game.
