Madison Bumgarner was in vintage midseason form and the Giants took advantage of some sloppy fielding by the Royals to break a 1-1 tie in the 8'th inning. Key Lines:
Buster Posey C- 1 for 3. BA= .217. The most important stat here is 6 innings behind the plate for the second game in a row. Buster will get a couple of days to recuperate then ramp up again for Opening Day.
Brandon Belt 1B- 3 for 3, 2B. BA= .433. Belt has been hot all spring and has stayed hot. Does he still have a breakout season in him?
Evan Longoria 3B- 2 for 3. BA= .323. Longoria understandably seems a lot more comfortable this spring. I think there is some bounceback potential here.
Cameron Maybin CF- 1 for 3, 2B. BA= .167. Maybin, Ferguson, Gerber and Henry Ramos are in the running for 4'th OF. Who is your pick? Who is Farhan and Bochy's pick? Are Farhan and Bochy's picks the same guy?
Mike Gerber RF- 1 for 1. BA= .421. Gerber has swung the best bat out of the Motley Crew this spring and he can play CF, at least as a backup. But....he bats left-handed. Should that matter?
Steven Vogt PH- 1 for 1. BA= .538. Vogt started the 8'th inning rally with a single to CF. He'll start the season in extended ST and the minors to get fully physically prepared. Good bet we'll see him in SF before the season is over.
Madison Bumgarner LHP- 6.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 6/3. ERA= 5.79. Bummy looks like he's ready to start the season. He'll get one more tuneup next Saturday which he said will likely be about 4 IP.
Sam Dyson RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 1.80. Dyson has looked strong this spring.
Mark Melancon RHP- 1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 11.12. Mark Melancon, on the other hand, has looked terrible this spring. This game does not help. Wish I could say he's a veteran pitcher rounding into form, but there is no sign of that at all. Given his recent history, you have to be very concerned this is the new normal for him.

Derek Holland will make his 5th spring start tomorrow afternoon against the ChiSox at Camelback Ranch.

As expected, Joey Bart won the Barney Nugent Award for most impressive player in their first camp.
*********************************************************************************
Willie Mays and Gaylord Perry stopped by the clubhouse to talk to the players. Look up the photo on sfgiants.com. and look at how big Willie's hands are.

Unlike recent years, the Giants had a winning Investor's Weekend and made it through without any serious injuries. No major injury setbacks so far this spring. That is the best news of all!

with the surplus of bullpen arms, i wouldn't be surprised if they decide to dfa melancon and eat the rest of his contract not to pitch for the giants. gott and bergen are making him expendable at this point.
ReplyDeleteMore likely he'll start the season on the DL.
DeleteMelancon's done stick a fork in him
ReplyDeletea few more along with him, let the Kids play!

Its interesting in a good way that a player like Joey Bart, who's starting the season in San Jose is still with Big league camp this late in the Spring.. Farhan and Bochy haven't ruled out Bart appearing in the majors this season. Wow, I hope this doesn't happen otherwise I could see some fans viewing him as the savior of the team which would be unfair to the kid. I saw an article where a scout told Baseball America that Bart could make the jump to the majors this year. While very encouraging, hope it doesn't happen.
ReplyDeleteMelancon indeed seems done and has been beaten out by so many arms, but I also cant see the Giants yet giving up on him and his salary without giving him some more time on the DL or just plain sending down to SAC (that can be done, right?) to work on things for however long it takes..
ReplyDeleteWe havent seen Pomerantz for awhile..He supposedley pitched in a minor league gaame rather then in MLB exhibition his last time through..Anybody hear how he did?..I'm assuming he's still healthy and I guess a lock for the rotation...
As for the OF, are the Giants happy going into the season with Mac and Parra as starting OFs on the flanks of Duggar (who I think has won the job for now)? .......Or do they think they need to trade (or are thers FAs still out there?) for a starting corner OF bat???.THat's the major question and impacts the rest...Gerber has done everything he can to win a backup OF (except convert to a RH bat!)and i could see him as a 5th OF if the Giants go that way..but whether the Giants obtain a starting corner OF bat or not,a real need is is still somebody that can play CF (and other OF positions) AND bat RH to give DUGGAR breaks against lefties...Unfortuantely that leaves only Fergurson and Maybin from the current roster and both have had poor camps..Do they have confidence in either? Farhan has to be looking for improvement here also...Next 10 days should remain interesting.

No Maybin..............PLEASE!
DeleteSeems like there will be a few teams in the next week that have some difficult decisions to make. I really hope Farhan is on the phone day and night lining up potential deals as rosters shape up. One player I would like to see fall into the Giants lap is Luke Voit. He and Bird are fighting for the 1B job and the one that loses will be available. Yankees need a SP to hold things down until Severino gets back so could Pomeranz be enough? Put Belt in LF and Voit would be a nice RH power bat at 1B or off the bench.
ReplyDeleteI have lost count of how many times I've said this, but I'll say it again. In fact, let's all say it together so we remember: Brandon Belt is not moving to left field!
DeleteCan we trade him before he breaks down?
DeleteAll those times you said it before were before Farhan took over. Farhan loves flexibility I’m sure nobody thought Cody Bellinger would get reps in CF with the dodgers but he has. I dont see what the big deal is if he can play the position and they are in desperate need of OF’s why not throw him out there and add a big bat at 1B??
DeleteHow many innings has Belt played LF this spring?
DeleteBelt is a very good 1B. One needs to consider the drop in 1B production, if Belt moves to lF as well.
DeleteZ is looking for Cheetah's to play in the OF not Giraffes
DeleteBelt's excellence at 1B even with a negative LFer (like Burrell and Morse were), the Giants are better off than having a subpar LFer AND a subpar 1Bman!
ReplyDelete..
Looks like a give-up lineup on Monday -- seriousness to start Wednesday?..
ReplyDeleteBeede with the start in Holland's place. Perhaps to see if his early success this spring was legit. I think he needs a little more seasoning.
DeleteYeah, he could use more starts in AAA, but I'm more encouraged about his progress this year then last year since he'll go with his 97 mph fastball, curveball, and changeup, while abandoning his other pitches including his 2 seam fastball, while the Giants were trying to teach him to pitch to contact last year. I'm no expert in developing pitchers, but didn't you find that kind off odd Doc?
DeleteMaybe the OF question should be Williamson or Parra?
ReplyDeleteIf it were up to me,I'd give Mac a chance, play him regularly every day in LF until he proves he can't play. If he stays at .250 with no power, he can probably slip through waivers, but like Jerrett Parker he remains tantalizingly AAAA. Incidentally, Parker's 2019 ST is much like Mac's!..
