The Giants offense laid down and died in front of Eric Lauer and the Padres which wasted a vintage ace level performance by Madison Bumgarner. The bad news here is if the Giants keep playing like this, which seems likely, Bumgarner will be traded by August 1. I guess the good news is if Bum keeps pitching like this, the Giants should get one heckuva haul for him! Key Lines:
Evan Longoria 3B- 2 for 4. BA= .500. Not a bad line from Longoria except he got thrown out at 2B on a ball he hit to the wall in LF.
Madison Bumgarner LHP- 7 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 9 K's. ERA= 2.57. Bum was on fire until he gave up a 3'rd inning dinger to Wil Myers. Myers later drove in the Padres other run with a single to drive in Ian Kinsler who had doubled. Anyway, Bum is back. It's just a shame the Giants can't put a better lineup behind him.
Steven Dugger and Brandon Belt went 0 for 8 at the top of the Giants lineup. Conner Joe and Micheal Reed started in LF and RF respectively. They went a combined 0 for 3, BB before being relieved by Gerardo Parra and Yangervis Solarte after LHP Lauer left the game.

The Giants will try to do better tomorrow against another lefty, Joey Lucchesi, with Derek Holland taking the hill for the Giants.

Early this offseason, the Mariners acquired OF Domingo Santana from the Brewers for OF Ben Gamel and a pitching prospect nobody had heard of. As far as anybody can tell, Farhan Zaidi did not bother to even kick the tires on Domingo Santana. Today, while someone named Conner Joe played LF for the Giants, Domingo Santana, who already hit a grand slam HR against the A's in Japan, played LF for the Mariners and fell a triple shy of a cycle while driving in 4 more runs. Just sayin'.
*********************************************************************************
In happier news, remember Tom Murphy? He was the catcher who the Giants picked up from the Rockies in the last few days of spring training then DFA'd. Well, Farhan worked out a trade with the Mariners for a 20 yo pitching prospect, RHP Jesus Osoria who hasn't pitched above the DSL. He did strike out 59 batters in 49.1 IP with just 7 walks while posting a 2.19 ERA last season. The Giants dropped RHP Merandy Gonzalez when they signed Murph, so they essentially replaced Gonzalez with Osoria. I think I'd rather have the young lottery ticket, so this series of moves was at least a small net positive.

Here’s what I’m sayin’ in return: Zaidi chose a scouting director from the Brewers, who surely knows Domingo Santana better than anyone on this site, and who presumably has Zaidi’s trust, as one of his early, central appointees. If he didn’t push Z to kick the tires on Santana, there’s an excellent chance that Santana isn’t worth much tire kicking. Moreover, if the Brewers’ FO, which has a reputation for being shrewd, couldn’t get more for Santana than they got, the general opinion among GMs presumably was that he wasn’t worth much. The Brewers could have held on to him with the hope that he’d raise his trade value, but they didn’t, or kept him for depth off the bench, but they didn’t. Now maybe Santana the Mariner will by July be walking on water across Puget Sound, while Reed and Joe will be showered with stale garlic fries every time that they dare step on the turf of Oracle Park. But I am happy to go on record now as doubting that.
ReplyDeleteNice appeal to authority, Campanari.
DeleteBurning Question #11: Will the Giants Leftfielders combine for a greater WAR than Domingo Santana?
Love the colorful language - I moved form Berkeley to Port Townsend, WA in 2000 - have the Puget Sound (and Straight of Juan de Fuca) just a few blocks from my house) and I have been to zero Mariner games and do not follow them...
DeleteI have little doubt that the offense will come around. The key question is, why in the heck was Panik hitting 8th? He should be second. Period. I have confidence in Duggar. One day off hasn't shaken that. Line drives off the bat of belt are nice. Even if they don't fall. Though a bunt against the shift would be most welcomed. Posey had a hit. Pitching was solid. I don't appreciate the black hole of production in left and right. Ruggiano/Stubbs v 2.0 is scary. Today is another day. Go Giants!
ReplyDeleteLittle doubt? Wow! Wish I could be that optimistic. California Dreaming is already looking like....well, a dream!
DeleteIsn't leading off Duggar a bit aggressive for the not-quite-a-rookie with a career total of 152 PA?
ReplyDeletePanik who was a near ST HOFer slashing .426/.449/.511 seems far better suited. Although not as fast as Duggar, Joe's no slouch!
It was disheartening -- BTW Longoria looked safe to K&K and this observer, Fire New York now! -- but openers don't determine seasons or the Giants would have beaten the Dodgers in 2018 after consecutive 1-0 wins in LA to start the season, courtesy of Joe! Did Farhan forget?
It's one thing to be a naysayer, it's another to forecast a season by one game.
Go Giants!
I will say this about Joe and Reed. If they are the guys Farhan believes will break out and be the Giants version of Chris Taylor or Max Muncy, they need to be out there every day getting 4....OK, at least 3 PA's for a full 3 months. If he does not believe in them enough to give them that, they have no business on the roster.
ReplyDeleteUnless he thinks he can trade them as part of getting a "real" LFer.
DeleteThey both came out after 2 PAs for pinch hitters in the 7th with Crawford on base.
SD brought in a LOOGY to pitch to Parra then after one batter brought in another RH to face Reed who was PHed for by Solarte.
Can't fault that -- the Giants hardly had any base runners, and didn't get anymore.
From the 7th, after Posey's "single" the Giants had a FC followed by 8 up, 8 down to end the game.
9 "veterans" accounted for the final 9 outs:
Crawford (FC), Para, Solarte, Panik, Sandoval, Duggar (sort of vet), Belt, Longoria, and Posey.
For the last 4, it was the 4th time through the lineup.
After the Spring Panik had, it's manager malfeasance to bat him 8th. He hit a deep fly, a liner, and another fly in 3 ABs.
Both Joe and Reed are 26 years old, had high ops 900+ in high minors, play multiple positions. If the Giants could hit on one of them, that would be big. If not, they are easily replaceable. If they were drafted and signed by the Giants, I'd probably wish that they would be getting this opportunity I think. Too bad about Mac though, but he didn't show enough in front of the new regime
DeleteWhat's interesting is after the Giants didn't get Harper they made it sound like they had back up plans lined up. The fact that Joe and Reed ended up being them so late in spring training tells me that maybe the original back up plans didn't materialize. No way you go from Harper to Joe/Reed. Theres a story there somewhere
ReplyDeleteBilly Baseball
I highly doubt BOTH Reed and Joe, but there's nothing to do but wait and see...Given Farhan's coming out and saying how much he likes both players, it's almost like a poor man's version of Sabean's "I am not an idiot"..:)
ReplyDeleteBTW. just read that the Giants worked out some type of deal with Seattle for Tom Murphy..
Haven't read anything on Mac
The GPT twitter site listed some of the Minor league assignments..two that surprised me were both HOWARD (maybe that makes sense because of Avelino in SAC?) and SHAW in Richmond...Especially while all the OFs (Garcia, Gerber, Ramos, YAZ and Slater) assigned to SAC seem to be nothing but career AAA/AAAA players..Maybe they think that will be more of a challenge, given the parks and level of prospects? OTOH, SHAW is from the old regime maybe he will be weeded out too?
SteveVA
Actually, it would have been hard for Shaw to get at bats with those 5 players. Gerber is the CF. They traded for Yaz and will give him a chance. Mac may be part of the equation if he is not claimed. They may want to keep old brother Ramos close for the sake of little brother Ramos. Slater is still a solid prospect, especially if he can really adjust his swing.
DeleteThank God we have a beautiful ballpark to visit and a team with a recent World Series title......or three. There are going to be some down days for the Giants in 2019, but there will be some good days, as well. Baseball is wonderful thing, even when wins are hard to come by. The season will have its' memorable moments, and we get Kruk, Kuip, Flem and John Miller.
ReplyDeleteAs for Farhan, I say give the guy some time and the benefit of the doubt. It's easy to underestimate just how bad of a hand he was dealt. The Giants 40 man roster was a complete mess, and there wasn't much talent elsewhere in the organization. It may well be that the Giants' outfield is as bad as it is because the only deals available would have provided only incremental help at the expense of more roster trouble. No deal is better than a bad deal - bad as in a deal that makes it tougher to really fix the problem.
I say let's all hang in there and enjoy the baseball, flawed as will likely be, and fasten our seat belts for some very big, possibly painful roster moves between now and August.
SF is going to get at least a cup of coffee from the Mariners in exchange for Tom Murphy's cup of coffee with the Giants!
ReplyDeleteLast game 2018 season, Dodgers 15 - Giants 0.
ReplyDeleteFirst Game 2019 season, Padres 2 - Giants 0.
Is this an improvement?
When is the last time (I ask the oracle of Elias) a team ended one season being shutout, shutdown and began the next in the same manner?
The 15-0 loss was at home.
DeleteGiants mustered 2 hits (singles), 0 walks, 11 Ks.
At home.
yes, a sorry exhibition against the LAD, had a dampening effect on the scooter presentation to HP. Anyway I see a string of at least 18 Zeros ...
DeleteWhen the Dodgers were shutout at home two games in a row to begin 2018, we absolutely knew they wouldn't win the World Series, didn't we?
ReplyDeleteIf the Giants DFAd Williamson before 2 PM EDT on Thursday and no one claims him before Saturday at 1 PM EDT, then the Giants can assign him to the minors.
ReplyDeleteIf they didn't make Thursday's deadline, then he can stay a Giant after 1 Sunday.
From www.thecubreporter.com:
The MLB waiver list is transmitted at 2 PM (Eastern) every business day.
Any of the other 29 MLB clubs can make a claim while the player is on waivers, and then at 1 PM (Eastern) on the second business day after the waivers are requested the MLB office determines if any claims were made, and if so, which club is awarded the claim.
The Giants acquired minor league RHP Jesus Ozoria for Tom Murphy.
Age: 20 (June 1, 1998)
Birthplace: Guananico, Dominican Republic
Bats/Throws: R/R Ht: 6' 2" Wt: 195
He's been assigned to AZL Giants Orange.
FWIW: first news on MLBTR concerning Mac's DFA was March 28, 2019 at 11:09am CDT, before 2:00 PM EDT, so waivers will close at 1:00 PM tomorrow, Saturday.
ReplyDeleteMinor league rosters are announced:
ReplyDeleteYou can start at the following link and follow the links on the right. http://www.milb.com/roster/index.jsp?sid=t478
Note worthy for me was:
Shaw is sent back to AA.
Howard stays at AA
Gonzalez stays at Augusta.
Most of the high draft pitchers from 2018 start at Augusta.
Does Joey Lucchesi look better than Eric Lauer to anyone else?
ReplyDeleteLauer had the better Spring but Luccehsi is no slouch.
Posey batting 2? Posey hit into twice the DPs as next highest in far fewer ABs this Spring. If Reed gets on let's hope there's 2 out. No, that can't happen in the first inning.
Duggar is the only LHB in the l/u.
8 RH batters at the expense of the Spring's BEST 2 hitters!
Forgot Crawford
DeleteOh bloody heck.
ReplyDeleteReed
posey (1b)
solarte,
longoria,
crawford,
joe,
duggar,
kratz
Can they at least pretend that they're trying to win? I guarantee this is a zaidi move. I don't even need to enumerate the flaws of this lineup. It's so apparent. And gruggiano and stubbs each start again. How long till parra asks for his release? WOW!
haha I hope Kratz (modern day Crash Davis) .200 hitter gets a hold of one a hits a three run bomb the other players on base courtesy of a walk an error ...
Deletewhat a strange pre-season ... so many garbage pick-ups / so many roster moves, players picked up (Joyce) and then DFA'd within 48 hours and then Slater demoted to AAA and Mac DFA'd, Stratton traded for what? exactly and then the team starts an OF with two dumpster dives (Reed and Joe) from other organizations. Then (predictably) the offense does a Face Plant on Game One. I am a very unhappy Giants fan - fan since the mid 70's ...
ReplyDeletePerhaps Shaun Anderson's strong showing led to trading off Stratton who hadn't shown consistency.
DeleteIt's unlikely that Williams Jerez will make anyone forget Chris Stratton.
I saw Jerez pitch on TV in a spring training game. He can really bring it. Per Fangraphs he averaged 95+ MPH on the FB last year. Lefties who throw that hard are not easy to find.
Deleteif mac clears waivers, i think he heads to extended spring training.
ReplyDeleteAngels might have some interest in Mac after learning that Justin Upton will be out 8-12 weeks with a bad turf toe injury. Yikes! That must be PAINFUL!
DeleteIs this whole Reed/Joe thing just to motivate mac , slater, and shaw to pick up the slack a little and come out fighting? Hope so. I can't do another day of this, let alone 4 more months.
