OK, team! This one is a true blockbuster with far-reaching consequences. The Dodgers found a way to unload...wait for it.....Matt Kemp AND Yasiel Puig in one big effing trade and manage to make their already impressive farm system even better. You paying attention to this, Farhan? Details are still emerging but the Dodgers are reportedly sending Kemp, Puig and LHP Alex Wood to the Reds for RHP Homer Bailey, RHP prospect Josiah Gray and SS prospect Jeter Downs. Bailey is obviously a contract balancer, but I absolutely love Jeter Downs and Josiah Gray as prospects. A new update has C/IF Kyle Farmer also going to the Reds along with $7 M in cash. So, let's break it down:
Matt Kemp had a nice bounceback season last year slashing .290/.338/.481 with 21 HR's with 1.6 fWAR. His production tailed off rather badley in the second half, though. He is 34 yo and has 1 yr/$21.5 M left on his contract.
We all know who Yasiel Puig is. I'll just say he has hit 51 HR's over the past 2 seasons. Those numbers could improves significantly playing half his games in Great American Ballpark. He is in his final arbitration year with MLBTR projecting a salary of $11.3 M.
Alex Wood pitched well for the Dodgers while ducking in and out of the DL which may or may not have been due to actual injuries. He put up a 3.68 ERA over 151. 2 IP last year. He also is in the final year of arbitration and is projected by MLBTR to make $9 M in 2019.
Kyle Farmer has performed well in very limited action for the Dodgers over the past 2 seasons. He is 28 yo and will make league minimum salary next season. He could be a decent back up C for the Reds with some versatility.
The best you can say about Homer Bailey is he pitched the most innings(106.1) in 2018 since 2014, but was ineffective going 1-14 with an ERA of 6.09. He is in the final year of his contract and set to make $23 M as well as a $5 M option buyout for 2020. The Dodgers are expected to simply release him and eat the $$ although that is what they were expected to do with Matt Kemp when they acquired him too, so they could give Bailey a chance to impress them in spring training before cutting him loose.
Now we get to the really sad part of this story:
Jeter Downs, SS Drafted #32 overall in 2017 out of HS. Now 20 yo. B-R, T-R. 5'11", 180 lbs.
2018 Low A: .257/.351/.402, 23 2B, 2 3B, 13 HR, 37 SB, 9.9 BB%, 19.7 K%, 524 PA.
I liked Downs a lot in the 2017 draft cycle and he's done nothing to diminish that admiration in his pro career. If I was going to comp him, I might pick retired Reds 2B Brandon Phillips who had a pretty good MLB career. Fangraphs had him as the Reds #6 prospect.
Josiah Gray, RHP. Drafted Round 2 in 2018 out of college(LeMoyne). 6'1", 210 lbs.
2018: 2-2, 2.58, 52.1 IP, 10.15 K/9, 2.92 BB/9.
Gray is a bit undersized but throws his FB in the mid-90's with excellent command. He backs that up with a plus slider that is still a bit inconsistent. His change-up lags behind. He is a converted position player so does not have a lot of mileage on the arm and is still learning how to pitch. Projects as a mid-rotation SP or a late-inning reliever.
Now, here's the even sadder part of the story:
The Dodgers just cleared out their OF logjam which would seem to be the prelude to signing Bryce Harper. Well, of course they did!
Now I think I'll just crawl over to a corner, curl up and moan....or else go throw myself down the stairs! LOL!
Oh, and how stupid is this of the Reds who will lose all of the top 3 acquired players to free agency after 2019 and give up 2 promising prospects in the process?
*********************************************************************************
As if the Dodgers trade doesn't disgust you enough, the A's swung a 3-way trade to acquire UT Jurickson Profar, and well, of course they did! This one is quite complicated with the A's getting Profar. The Rangers receive IF prospect Eli White from the A's as well as LHP's Brock Burke and Kyle Bird and RHP Yoel Espino from the Rays. The Rays get RHP Emilio Pagan, #38 overall 2019 draft pick from the A's and RHP Rollie Lacy from the Rangers. The Rangers also receive $750 K in international bonus pool money.
Profar was once considered one of the very top, if not THE top prospect in all of baseball. His career has been interrupted by several serious injuries. He finally got regular playing time with the Rangers last year and had a good season: .254/.335/.458, 35 2B, 6 3B, 20 HR, 10 SB, 9.1 BB%, 14.8 K%, 594 PA. He was especially productive in July and August, I added him to my fantasy baseball roster mid-season and he gave me terrific production before tailing off a bit in September. Profar will likely be the A's regular 2B in 2019. He's moving to a more challenging hitting environment. He is a candidate for further upside, although analysts are split on just how high his ceiling is a this point.
Rays:
Emilio Pagan, RHP. DOB: 5/7/1991. 6'3", 210 lbs.
2018: 3-1, 4.35, 62 IP, 9.15 K/9, 2.76 BB/9. Pagan is a solid mid-late inning reliever with 4 years of contract control.
Rollie Lacy is 23 yo, 6'4', 195 lbs. He pitched at A+ level last season for the Rangers and Cubs systems with high ERA's and walk rates. Lottery ticket.
#38 Draft Pick- there is about a 1 in 10 chance of this pick netting a player who goes on to have a significant MLB career.
Rangers:
Eli White, SS/2B. DOB: 6/26/1994. B-R, T-R. 6'2", 175 lbs.
2018 AA: .306/.388/.450, 30 2B, 8 3B, 9 HR, 18 SB, 10.7 BB%, 20.1 K%, 578 PA.
Projects as a solid utility player. Could play in MLB as soon as 2019.
Brock Burke, LHP. DOB: 8/4/1996. 6'4", 200 lbs.
2018 A+: 3-5, 3.84, 82 IP, 9.55 K/9, 3.29 BB/9.
2018 AA: 6-1, 1.95, 55.1 IP, 11.55 K/9, 2.28 BB/9.
Breakout season with dominance in AA. Big downward plane on a mid-90s FB per Eric Longenhagen of Fangraphs. Apparently changed grip on change-up making it a plus pitch.
Kyle Bird, LHP. DOB: 4/12/1993. 6'2", 175 lbs.
2018 AA: 0-2, 3.66, 19.2 IP, 10.53 K/9, 4.12 BB/9.
2018 AAA: 3-1, 1.94, 55.2 IP, 10.51 K/9, 4.20 BB/9.
Again per Longenhagen, 4 pitch mix. Low 90's FB, crazy high spin rates. Walks too many batters. Projects as lefty reliever.
Yoel Espinal, RHP. DOB: 11/7/1992. 6'2", 200 lbs.
2018 A+: 0-1, 3.86, 9.1 IP, 7.71 K/9, 2.89 BB/9.
2018 AA: 3-3, 1.98, 54.2 IP, 11.69 K/9, 4.77 BB/9.
Mid-relief prospect. Per Longenhagen, throws hard(94-95 MPH) with a "weird sinker/power changeup in the 89-91 range."
Seems to me the clear winners in this deal are the A's who get a solid MLB player with remaining upside. Rays get a solid MLB reliever and seemed motivated to clear out a pitching logjam in their upper minors. Rangers get pitching depth in their farm system but lose Profar who maybe was available due to some reported malcontent issues over manipulation of his service time in 2017.
*********************************************************************************
The Giants signed LHP/RHP Pat Venditte for a reported $585 K which is $30 K above the league minimum salary. Venditte has long been a major curiosity to prospect watchers due to his ability to pitch both right and left handed. He's kicked around baseball since since 2008 without much success in limited MLB opportunities. He posted a 2.57 ERA in just 14 IP for the Dodgers last year but with a K rate of 5.8/9. His FB sits in the mid-80's but plays up do to funkiness in his delivery which is close to sidearm from both sides. He is much more effective as a LHP facing LH batters. Right now it does not seem like he would make the Giants Opening Day roster without a trade or 2 involving lefty relievers.
*********************************************************************************
It looks like the Giants are not going to trade for Domingo Santana as he is reportedly going to the Mariners for OF Ben Gamel and RHP Noah Zavolas. Trader Jerry strikes again! Santana has tools and had a very promising 2017 in which he hit 30 dingers and stole 15 bases. He got lost in the shuffle after the Brewers obtains Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain for 2018 and his numbers suffered dramatically. The big rap on Santana is his high K rate.
Gamel has put up a slash line of .269/.331/.392 in 3 MLB seasons. He is a nice 4'th or 5'th OF. Zavolas is a pitcher from the lower minors with non-descript numbers. Lottery ticket.
This is a very nice upside play for the Mariners who give up very little in return. Seems like a deal the Giants could have topped. Maybe Santana's K rates were just too much for Farhan Zaidi to stomach?
*********************************************************************************
Finally, CC Sabathia reportedly underwent a coronary angioplasty with a stent placement. Yikes! I guess size does matter and not in a good way!

Seems to me this has been a very festive offseason in general all around baseball except for here in SF. A lot of these moves could have been decent options for the Giants but there are no signs of good tidings whatsoever in this winter slumberland. Farhan seems like a reindeer in the headlights right now with his hands in his pockets at the big dance while all the pretty girls are getting kissed under the mistletoe. Will there be any presents for Giants fans under the Christmas tree or just an ambidextrous pitcher and a few lumps of coal?
ReplyDeleteFarhan seems like a reindeer in the headlights
DeleteNope.
He's keeping his powder dry for the next two FA classes:
2020
Xander 27
Cole 29
Arenado 29
Ozuna 29
Wacha 29
Didi 30
Sale 31
2021
Mookie 28
Trout 29
A little patience might be in order.
How many of those names do you think will actually make it to free agency?
DeleteWacha? Really? Maybe mention Goldschmidt hes kind of a big deal....
DeleteAnd now gregor blanco signs a contract with the Mets? What is the world coming to!
ReplyDeleteHard out here for a Giants fan desperate for off season action...
This move definitely puts the Bums in the front running for Harper. Giants should be there offering the same short term big money contract, bid it up!
Domingo Santana is the rare cat who has a reverse split while playing home games at Miller park. The giants could have beat that trade easily, the K ratio is pretty heavy...
I wouldn't argue with you that the Reds gave up a lot for rentals - but they did hang onto their top 5 prospects and a lot of ratings have that righty pitcher not in the top 10. I think the Dodgers got better by ditching Puig, he will hit a lot of HRs in that park.
Your comments on Profar remind me about how certain Giants prospect hounds used to drool over Texas "toolsy" prospects... Lets do a totally baseless comp real quick:
Roughed Odor 5 seasons, 6.8 WAR, slash of 248/295/440
Joe Panik 5 seasons, 7.0 WAR, slash of 277/338/395
This is rare comp where it lines up year by year, although different leagues.
Is the grass greener?
I'll be honest, I wasn't excited with the prospect of Mr. Wheres My ring coming to the Giants. I think he has a lot of baggage inside his oversized head. He's won exactly zero playoff series on teams with quality teammates and stellar pitching. I think he is a wonderful talent who might end up with no rings. I have no problem with the dodgers over paying for him.
ReplyDeleteI really hope I'm not wrong here. Haha
Hmm....I seem to recall another player from the distant past who folks said had a big head and couldn't seem to find a ring.....
DeleteSome of the comments I've read from the beatwriters that covered the winter meetings have been puzzling regarding Zaidi and the Giants which might explain their quiet off-season so far. The Giants are not in on any of the big name free agents and a beatwriter even said that Zaidi doesn't seem to feel any pressure to win right now. Who knows what their GM is trying to do, compete or step back in 2019?
ReplyDeleteLG
Maybe the plan is to trade Bum and a RP or two and Zaidi thinks the trade market will be more seller friendly after the FA's are signed?
DeleteIt's the only course of action - play the first half and see if the 2019 SF Giants can contend. If so, trade for a big bat or a big arm if you can get one for the stretch run. Remember Johnny Cueto may magically appear for the final month...but if not, trade away all expiring contracts for good young prospects (or offload bad contracts in the package).
ReplyDeleteI would say that course of action almost guarantees a midseason selloff. You can't win a championship in the first half of the season but you sure can lose one. The current roster would almost certainly find themselves out of it long before July 31.
DeleteOnly a TRUE Giant fan could connect the word best and Homer Bailey's innings pitched in 2018!
ReplyDeleteI know, I know, it's context, but there was the matter of his 2nd n0-hitter...
Were the Giants connected to Mike Fiers? If Farhan was interested, he'll get to see him in the Battle of the Bays!
That was the rumor(Fiers). Snooze, you lose.
DeleteNot sure I would want Fiers on a 2 year deal. The Angels 1 year deals with Harvey and Cahill seem pretty sweet to me, though.
DeleteIt's kind of interesting the difference in attitudes between fans who read and comment on a blog like this and the average fan out there. Here we are talking about what a great trade this is for the Dodgers. I was listening to KNX Newsradio last night and they had a Twitter poll asking listeners if they approved of the trade. The response was overwhelmingly negative.
ReplyDeleteWhat that tells me is we all might be OK with a teardown and rebuild of the Giants, but the vast majority of people who put their butts in the seats at AT&T would absolutely hate it and disappear.
Going to AT&T to watch good Giants baseball is the best show on Earth. Going to AT&T to watch bad Giants baseball and paying the same amount of money is much less attractive.
DeleteSpending money in the offseason gives the illusion of hope and that the team is trying to win for most fans. Unless you just won the world series, most fans here need to see improvement in the offseason to get them to buy tickets.
I dont think Giants ownership is willing to take a huge hit to attendance and a big part of their revenue but maybe they have carefully done the math and can afford to have a half full stadium for a season or two.
As a true Giants fan I want whats best for the team. Unfortunately I wont be going to many games to watch a team that will be drastically affected by the lack of support from management. Bochy will be humiliated in his last year while he trots out old slow Giants legends who will all be wondering when they will be traded.
AT&T would be full every game in 2019 and beyond if they signed Harper. I’m not saying it is the best thing to do but people will pay to watch him hit here. The truth is that this team needs fans more than it needs to win right now and Harper would bring the fans. There are other moves they could make as well to give the fans hope but so far we havent seen anything yet.
Report in MLBTR today that AJ Pollock is asking for a 6 year contract. I really like Pollock a lot and he is almost a perfect fit for what the Giants need, but even I would not go to 6 years for him!
ReplyDeleteA.J. has managed to thin out the suitors -- MLBTR says "Speculatively speaking, the White Sox, Giants or Indians are teams that could be fits for Pollock moving forward."
Delete6 years - $80 million, 10 years - a billion dollars, what the heck, whatever he wants!
Just incentivize it to games played which should be what he wants, with an opt-out.
Is he worth $100,000 per game? Pay him for 100 games ($10,000,000) plus a mil per 10.
With inking Pat Venditte, the Giants became the 28th team to sign a FA.
ReplyDeleteOnly the Indians and the Reds haven't signed a FA but the Reds did make their inglorious splash.
The Blue Jays, Orioles, and Marlins have signed FAs to minor league contracts.
My problem is the number of people who think that's the giants were abysmal last season. Lest we forget that, with most of the team on the DL for extended stretches, the team was within striking distance of the division lead until August. September was atrocious, yes, but this was not 2017 part 2. Those advocating for a full teardown probably though bochy should have been fired halfway through 2010.
ReplyDeleteThat is a good point. Let's see if we can add up all the injuries and their impact:
Delete1. Bumgarner looks locked and loaded in spring training then misses 2 months and is not quite the same after.
2. Cueto was sensational for a couple of starts then lost for the season with TJ.
3. Samardzija came up with a bum shoulder and never got it right.
4. Buster Posey's power numbers way down due to a bad hip.
5. Belt and Panik were both having good seasons until injury and illness derailed them
6. Mac Williamson was starting what looked like a breakout season before a concussion ruined the rest of his season.
In spite of all that, they remained in contention until the last week in August. After trading Cutch and shutting down Buster and Belt, they completely collapsed, which is not surprising at all.
Oh, and Evan Longoria missed 6 weeks early which probably delayed his acclimation and familiarity with NL West pitchers.
DeleteAs I wondered in the Will Smith post:
Delete> AnonymousDecember 20, 2018 at 1:48 PM
Cove, every team goes through injuries > would you be able to provide numbers for the Nl west of total player games lost to injuries through the 8 positions starting players and starting pitchers lost starts due to injury?
I ask that as ; as mediocre might not define San Fran particularly last year!
Richard in Winnipeg.
You can't do anything about Cueto but you CAN imagine that the other 7 players on that list just have themselves their normal season in 2019 - why shouldn't they be in contention through August same as 2018? BTW I believe in Mac for LF - he was hitting the ball HARD before the concussion.
DeleteGreat recount. Also, the whole Austin Jackson signing kept Duggar in AAA most of the season. When he joined the team, it's like he was a spark for the offense. Then, the separated shoulder ended his season.
ReplyDeleteStrickland was locked in as closer until a dumb injury after a blown save cost him 6 weeks.
This all sounds very rational, till one recalls that this team convinced upper management to toss Evans—and therefore all their top decision-makers, as the new GM brought in his own team—and modify their old MO for something up-to-date. This contending team, all year bobbing at about .500, convinced upper management to hoist the white flag by trading McCutchen, leaving it with few other tradable assets. That judgment on the team, followed by a drastic overhaul up top, doesn’t strike me as in accord with all the sanguine opinions in this thread. It strikes me as a judgment that the Giants, however valiant in 2018, were enough alike the dismal team of 2016 part 2 and the bottom-feeders of 2017, that change needed to be deep and thorough. We didn’t have a good team hit by bad luck, but a low-mediocre team hit by bad luck. Isn’t that the logical inference from the behavior of upper management, and also endorsed by writers who watched the Giants most, such as Baggarly and Pavlovich?
DeleteCampanari,
DeleteYou are basically talking about Larry Baer and the ownership group here and appealing to their authority to know what's best. Maybe not Larry Baer, but I would put most of the ownership group somewhere below the Twitter users who listen to KNX Newsradio in terms of their understanding of baseball.
If I had to guess, the ownership decision to oust Evans and kick Sabes upstairs came down to "gee, we just had a higher payroll than the Dodgers and look what it got us. Hey! Maybe we should hire someone who knows how the Dodgers did it to run our team."
Well, the Dodgers or Piirates or Brewers or Rays or D-Backs or Cubs or the MLB Office Torre Tigers, given that the Giants interviewed (or wanted to) at least Huntington, Bloom, Sawdaye, McLeod, and Ng.
DeleteInteresting that the Giants were in no hurry to hire or interview until after the WS ended so they could interview Zaidi. Then boom! He's the GM, like 1 day after his interview. Hmm.....
DeleteSince 2011 (8 years in-a-row this coming season!) attendance has been down year-to-year EVERY YEAR except 2015 when it was up 7,000 (out of 3.3 MILLION)!
ReplyDeleteIt was down 147K in 2018 when the Giants tried really hard to compete within the CBT dictates and were at .500 at the end of August and on on life support but still kinda in it.
Unless the 5 IFers (including C) rise to their "potential" -- whatever that is -- without a Miracle on 3rd Street (well it's close phonetically to 34th Street) there will not be 3,000,000 B-I-T-S in 2019 for the first time in TEN years (in the entire post Bondsian Era).
Is that why Farhan was hired?
I think not!
I'm for a re-build, I'm for a spend-and-tough-it-out, I'm for an entertaining cast on the AT&T stage, I'm not ready for a Country of Old Men -- Grumpy Old Men at that -- collecting 10x my lifetime income every year going through the motions of lying prostrate in front of the Los Angeles Zeitgeist begging for mercy.
Give Colorado -- is there anyone else in the West who will put up a legit protest -- a couple of STARS (haha) for a few lottery picks so someone can contend with the Wicked Witches of the West!
Give them Panik and Belt and a couple stud relievers for a few prospects, take a top 5-10 for Bum, give them some short term RPs, deal anyone who is not the future, that's the only way to stop LA!
What's important anyway, Giants can finish 4th in the NL West with or without a whole lot of gray beards.
Oh, I think BITS was a big part of why Evans/Sabean were fired and Zaidi brought in. Combine that with a higher payroll than the Dodgers in 2018 and you have a perfect storm for a "do something!" demand from the majority of the ownership group.
DeleteAs for Grumpy Old Men, if that is the plan, I'm A-OK with it, but where do you see that happening right now? The Dodgers just found a way to dump 3 expensive pieces of dead wood in 1 single trade. Do you see the Giants doing that?
DeleteLAD had a willing patsy in Cincinnati -- I read in a MLBTR blog excited Reds fans -- they even want Grandal, they "are going to compete" for the division. Gotta love the 'tude, they could jump the Bucs but the "Big 3" in the Central are not sitting idly by.
DeleteBTW, I went back and was reading your earliest blogs to lead into the 2010 season -- I wanted to see how you read the "Arrival." Of course, it was a lot of uncanny trades and signings and the culmination of great drafts starting with Cainer, but was surprised Brandon Belt was not mentioned, not even a HM for the top 50 prospects. A 2009 4th round pick he didn't quite come from nowhere but he sure barrelled in tearing up the monors like it was Boys Baseball.
He's always been an enigma wrapped in a puzzle creating his own riddle (doing Winston Churchill no favors).
Nobody expected anything out of Brandon Belt coming out of the draft. He did not start his pro career until the 2010 season which was a revelation to say the least. I was almost immediately a big fan and ranked him quite highly in my 2011 Top 50 Prospects.
DeleteOf MLBTR’s top 10 free agents, only 4 have signed: #3 Corbin, #7 Eovaldi, #9 Happ, #10 Brantley.
ReplyDeleteOff-season isn’t over.
Relax and let Zaidi do his job.
Who's not relaxed!
DeleteI'm ready for 3rd espresso.
BTW, Mojo the Seer (meant as a compliment), what is Zaidi's job?
Do we know?
Stock the Farm, tear-down, rebuild, compete, spend, save for August signings or the next FA class, get 3,000,000 BITS, confound the Fans, confuse the Dodgers?
The LAD part was a throw-away -- they probably know better than we!
Yeah, I'm not sure who's not relaxed. I just trying for have a little fun with it all in addition to serious(hopefully) analysis.
DeleteHa ha! I’m not much of a Seer.
DeleteI think Zaidi is playing a weak hand. Giants don’t have players to dump. We can say all we want about the Reds being a patsy in that trade, but the truth is Puig, Kemp & Wood all start if they are on the Giants in ‘19. And Farmer makes the team as well over Pablo. The Dodgers needed none of them.
I believe Zaidi is waiting out the market. Not smart to give Pollock 6 years. Or Bryce 10.
Giants have one player who is currently tradable with positive contract value. Bum. And if the Giants trade him, they’ve cashed out of 2019.
I guess I’m saying that there are not a lot of options. And they’re not going to magically appear now that Farhan is here.
For now I favor no move as opposed to a Longoria move.
