Game Wrap 9/26/2018: Padres 3 Giants 2

Aramis Garcia hit his 4'th HR of the month to drive in 2 runs, but the rest of the Giants offense was quiet and could not overcome the 3-0 Padres lead.  Key Lines:

Aramis Garcia C- 1 for 3, HR(4), BB.  BA= .302.  Garcia has toonder in his bat and has had quite a month of September.  Is he ready for a full season of MLB AB's?

Abiatal Avelino SS- 2 for 3. BA= .250.  Avelino gets his first 2 MLB hits.  Does not commit any errors.

Casey Kelly RHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.04.  Kelly decent 5 innings for Kelly.  The first run scored on a Freddy Galvis triple and Sac Fly  by Wil Myers.  The second scored when Travis Jankowski hit a dribbler that was scored as a hit but advanced to 2B on Kelly's wild throw.  Jankowski then advanced to 3B on a groundout and scored on a balk.  Kelly is someone the Giants should keep on the 40 man roster and bring to spring training next year.  Can he be another Giants dumpster dive success story?

The Giants are in sole possession of 10'th place in the Tank Derby.  Q:  Is that pick protected even though a compensation pick pushes it down to #11? That could have big implications for signing FA's with QO's.

The Giants get their last day off at home before starting the final series of the season against the Dodgers who come in trailing the Rockies by 0.5 games.  Tank Derby vs knocking off the Bad Guys?

  1. Is Garcia a good bad ball hitter? Looked like he golfed that out of the park, like some left handed pull hitters do. Like to see him on the 25 man squad next year.

    1. I hope he can stick - he plays a pretty good 1B as well - with Posey, Hundley and Garcia you wouldn't need Belt taking up space in the training room so maybe Belt can be packaged with one of the white elephant contracts and move on out. Can they move Longoria out and put Sandoval as starting 3B? Posey starting 1B, Hundley starting C, Garcia back-up both. Anyway, we'll see....

  2. After being swept in 3 games in LA, Rockies have won 6 straight leaving them a loss ahead of the Dodgers. Heh heh.
A streaky team plays their last 4 AT HOME (1 against scuffling Phils and 3 with Nats who are 1-3 playing Rox in Washington), Colorado "could" win out and it doesn't matter what the Giants do against LA.
MLB probables have the Dodgers using their day off today to go to a 4-man rotation with Ryu and Kershaw on Friday-Saturday, while the Giants inserted Kelly to have Bumgarner and Rodriguez to start the series and Suarez or Holland in the finale.
Early favorites, LA and Chicago may well end up being the Wild Cards!
If the Dodgers end up as the Wildcard on Tuesday it's likely to be Stripling against Chicago or Milwaukee. The Brewers may be in the drivers seat in the Central facing Detroit at hmee with the Cubs hosting St Louis.
Back in March not too many would have picked Atlanta, Milwaukee, and Colorado winning divisions but it is very possible to happen with SF and StL facing their rivals.

  3. Thank you Dr B for a great season of blogging - I began following you from pre-season this year (remember when we all thought for a minute that Bobby Evans wasn't a dumbs^&t after all when he creatively dumped and signed to stay under the CBT? He did get rid of Span and Moore, now someone needs to come in and get rid of Samardjiza, Longoria, Melancon. Anyway, thank you for opening my eyes to the many points of view about SFGiants baseball! Cheers

    1. Amen.
Making an "old" team older rarely works.
Adding vets to a solid core with young guys playing key roles can work, but the Giants have one regular position player under 30 -- either Hanson or Panik depending on who is playing 2nd.

  4. If its Tank Derby v knock out the Dodgers - well, it's knock out the Dodgers isn't it? If St Louis can rise up and overcome the Cubs (was StL trying to lose to the Brewers yesterday? How does the pinch game-tying runner fall down between 3rd and home) and the Giants do the same v LA the Rockies will coast in as NLWest champs, Brewers as NLCentral champs and Cubs v Cards for the wild card game.

  5. Giants are likely to pick 10th whether they sweep or get swept. Minnesota and the Mets both play teams they should be able to win a couple.
SF while losing has an outside chance at 9th if Toronto comes up strong against Tampa Bay.
St Louis in an epic fail today probably lost their shot at the 2nd WC.
