Game Wrap 9/11/2018: Braves 4 Giants 1

Same song 10'th verse, could get better but it's gonna get worse.....  It was the familiar storyline for this game as Andrew Suarez had a Quality Start but the Giants failed to provide runs and chalked up their 10'th consecutive loss, tying a team record in the San Francisco era.  The Giants have had some pretty bad teams in the San Francisco era, which does give this some perspective.  Key Lines:

Austin Slater 1B- 0 for 4, E(3).  Slater tried to backhand a ball in the 3'rd inning and muffed it for an error.  It was not a routine play.  More in the "likely" category.  Later he saved the inning with a nice recovery on a ball hit by Freddie Freeman that took a bad hop.  Just for the record, Slater has a slightly negative UZR at 1B but is strongly positive at all 3 OF positions, all SSS's.

Chris Shaw LF- 0 for 3.  BA= 0.50.  Shaw probably needs at least a half-season more AB's in AAA but I'm OK with him getting MLB looks this month as the season is way beyond lost anyway.  Shaw made a nice running catch of a slicing liner in the 4'th inning but then ran about 10 yards before unleashing a weak throw as Nick Markakis waltzed home with the Braves first run.  I guess how that play would affect Shaw's UZR would depend on how likely the observer thought Markakis was to score on it.  If his chances were 100%, the stroll Shaw took after the catch may be poor form, but it didn't matter.  I guess I would rate the chances of a successful throw as "remote" which is in the 1-10% range.

Andrew Suarez LHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 12/1.  ERA= 4.33.  This was Suarez' 10'th QS out of 25.  That ratio should be more like 15 out of 25, but he's had 3 other games where he went at least 5 IP with 2 or fewer runs allowed.  His ERA is 3.63 over his last 7 Starts, 4.08 over his last 15 and 4.33 over the full 25, so he has gotten stronger over the course of the season.  It is probably as safe to pencil him into next year's rotation as any pitcher.

Steven Okert LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.  Okert is probably not someone the Giants want to release over the offseason based on his record in AAA and since being called up.

  1. Schulman says:
last 11-game losing streak was 1951 -- the year they won the pennant on the Bobby Thomson home run. They've had only three streaks longer than 10 since 1908. That one, another 11-gamer in '40 and 13-gamer in '44

  2. belt now needs offseason surgery, shut him down and bring up miguel gomez and this likely increases the chances of a bumgarner trade this offseason.

  3. The team BA for September is .190 (30th). Team OPS for September (.538) is 30th. Can't win if you can't score.
