A squibbed, broken bat liner down the 3B line in the 8'th inning by Matt Adams was the difference in this ballgame. Of course, a team that strikes out 8 times is going to get more chances for hits like that than a team that strikes out 16 times. Key Lines:
Evan Longoria 3B- 3 for 5, 2B. BA= .250. Longo was just 2 for 17 coming into this game. Fun Fact: His hard hit percentage is the highest of his career.
Chris Shaw LF- 1 for 3, BB. BA= .237. Shaw singled in his first AB then drew a bases-loaded walk in the 3'rd to drive in the Giants first run of the game and chase SP John Gant.
Alen Hanson PH/2B- 2 for 2, 2B. BA= .264. Based solely on this year's performances, Hanson should be the starting 2B heading into the offseason.
Madison Bumgarner LHP- 6 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.20. Although the Giants loss may have been a bit BABIPy, Bummy got some outs on hard-hit balls too, so it cuts both ways. He did leave the game tied after the Giants 2-run 7'th inning.
Mark Melancon RHP- 0.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K. ERA= 3.06. We've seen this from Melancon time and again: 2 quick outs then hit a wall. Tony Watson came in to face the LH batting Adams and made the pitch he wanted, but Adams would not have had the opportunity to put the ball in play had not those 2 runners reached. The 2-out walk hurts the most. Not the type of performance to get himself penciled in as the closer in the offseason.

I have a few moves I would like to see the Giants make this offseason that I think could get them back to being competitive next year. Instead of dumping a ton of money into Harper or Machado they should target 2 under the radar free agents who would be affordable and perfect fits in AT$T. Nick Markakis and DJ Lemahieu. Trade Panik as the big offseason shake up and play DJ at 2B and Markakis in RF and bat them 2 & 3 in the lineup.
ReplyDeleteNot the sexiest moves but you acquire a contact hitting RF who loves to spray the ball gap to gap and a star in the making in Lemahieu. See how the season goes next year with those moves and if a bigger splash is still needed then go after a big name free agent like Arenado, Goldy, or JD Martinez after the 2019 season.
2019 lineup:
Dugger CF
Lemahieu 2B
Markakis RF
Posey C
Belt 1B
Longoria 3B
Crawford SS
Mac/Shaw/Hanson/Slater LF
2020 lineup:
Dugger CF
Lemahieu 2B
Markakis RF
Arenado 3B
Posey 1B
Belt LF
Bart C
Crawford SS
In 2021 we would start to see guys like Ramos and Luciano replace Markakis and Belt as well as hopefully a new young core. Until then i think DJ and Markakis would do wonders to solve some of the offenses problems for the next 2 years.
I agree with the basic premise of your post. My specific concerns with Markakis and Lemahieu: 1. Does Markakis have enough speed to get to balls in Triples Alley? 2. Lemahieu has rather severe Home/Road splits which suggest he my be a Coor's Field phenomenon.
Delete4 Posey
Delete5 Belt
6 Longoria
7 Crawford
8 ??? LF
is not a lineup that's going to win you games and go to the playoffs. This team needs to be deconstructed, and it's probably too late to get anything back for the pieces. It was a fun ride, get ready for the rebuild!
If the Giants want to shakeup the roster, it won't be easy, check out Pavs recent article about the subject. Posey, Crawford, Melancon have full no trade clauses. Even Belt and Madbum have partial no trade clauses. Reading that makes me wonder how they're going to make the changes they need to make..
DeleteLG
I was starting to have some hope that the back end of Melancon's contract might be a lot better than the front until the last couple of games. Ugh!
Deletenext start could be madbum's last in a giants uniform, i think madbum will be made available in winter meetings for the right price
ReplyDeleteYou might be right. I have been getting the same vibes lately, especially from some recent quotes from Bummy himself. He'll have less value this offseason than last, but they should still be able to get a couple of MLB-ready prospects plus maybe a lottery ticket or two from the lower minors.
DeleteQuick note on 2019 draft order. (I’m not sure if Doc noted this previously) The Braves will get a compensation pick at #9 next year for failing to signing Carter Stewart in this past draft. This will push the Giants down one.
ReplyDeleteTrade MadBum??? No way!!! ARE there any prospects that are a GUARANTEED to make it to the MLB for a lifetime 3.03 ERA pitcher in his prime?? C'mon folks the last three years wouldn't have been any different for Marichal had he had to endure this mess? 3 yrs ago MadBum gets the least run production in his starts. 2 yrs ago bike accident and this year fractured pitching hand... Anyone think that he wouldn't win 20 games with the Yanks or Bosox. This team brings in OLD postdated retreads and expects to win. Meanwhile they destroy the mentality of the young guys in their system with a manager LONG past his days. I'll make a guarantee,,,,,,, this team will NOT win another NL West title, much less a WS with this present regime and mentality. I have followed this team from their greatest man and player in the '51 Polo Grounds, through the jungles of VietNam and 4 wonderful WS Titles... It bothers me to see this team look like the pathetic Mets of old....
ReplyDeleteTackle box
Whoa there, Tacklebox! Take it easy there, my friend! Nobody is dumping on MadBum. All this trade talk is because he is the one veteran Giant who could bring back significant talent in a trade. Here's the problem: He's going to be a free agent after next season. The Giants have 3 choices here: 1. Trade him when he will still command significant talent in return. 2. Give him a great big ol' contract extension added onto all of the crippling long-term contracts they already have. 3. Keep him for 1 more run in 2019(likely futile) and let him test the market after the season is over.
DeleteNone of those are ideal scenarios, but I have just one question: Do you think the Giants should give a 30 yo pitcher with a ton of miles on his arm and declining velocity another 5+ year/6 digit contract? If the answer is no, they should trade him if they can get good value. If the answer is yes, then we'll just have to agree to disagree.
...er make that 9 digits.
DeleteI didn't intend to show excitement concerning MadBum. I just believe that it is a shot in the pickle barrel to guarantee equal replacement for him. I believe he is worth a large contract, but not out of sight one. The amount of money they are paying some of these clowns to blow games is ridiculous... Plain ignorance has caused this situation. It just seems to me that the Giants are going to punish MadBum for their signings of the following per year:
DeleteMelancon - $15.5M
Samardzija - $18M
Belt - $14.56M
Pence - $18M
Please don't take me a an excitable person, especially to people I value highly. I just so sick of this destroying these kids. I am just sick of Bochy and both GMs... I guess we are going to find out if Baer has any balls this offseason>..
If Bochy had any sense at all, he would have had Aramis CATCHING long ago and testing these young guys instead of cramming Blanco and Pence down our throats..
Sincerely thank you for all your hard work...
Barry Zito's contract was bad for the Giants. Matt Cain's contract extension bad for the Giants. Jeff Samardzija's contract was bad for the Giants. Tim LIncecum's last contract was bad for the Giants. Johnny Cueto's contract can still be salvaged if he comes back strong from TJ, but at this point looks bad. Mark Melancon's contract has been a disaster. A Madison Bumgarner extension will almost certainly be bad for the Giants.
DeleteLesson: Long term contracts for aging pitchers are almost always bad for the team.
I don't see it as "punishing" Madbum because of the other contracts. Extending Madbum will be bad even if all those other contracts never happened. Since long term contracts for 30+ yo pitchers are quite obviously bad, the Giants should stop giving them out. Since MadBum is the next one up, they need to start by saying no to him. Stinks that it has to start with MadBum but if not him now, who and when?
I understand that prospects are prospects and no prospect is a sure thing. It's just that it comes down to 3 choices: 1. Getting something for Bumgarner. 2. Giving him a big longterm contract. 3. Getting nothing for him.
DeleteI'll take #1, myself.
