Game Wrap 7/3/2014: Cardinals 7 Giants 2

The Giants did not pitch well, field well or hit well and the result was another lopsided loss and another lost series.  Key Lines:

Madison Bumgarner- 5  IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 6 K's.  It is generally not a good sign for the game when the SP gives up a 2 run dinger to Jhonny Peralta in the first inning.  A throwing error by Adam Duvall in the 4'th opened the gates for another 3 runs to come around and that was pretty much the ballgame.

The Loss, coupled with the Dodgers' win left the Giants 0.5 games behind the Bad Guys for the NL West lead.

Matt Cain tries to get his and the Giants ship turned around to open a weekend series in San Diego facing Eric Stults, and if they don't win this one, you KNOW things are bad!

Adam Duvall got shipped out after the game to make room for the return of Brandon Belt.

  1. I like the alternate universe Giants 7-2 victory in spite of things gone wrong.

    1. Pagan is a valuable member of the team, but I think that is a gross oversimplification. The Giants also miss Belt's LH bat with HR power. I don't think Pagan's injury caused Romo to melt down or starters to pitch poorly. I don't think it caused Morse to go into a slump. The Giants have been running out half of a AAA lineup for several weeks now. They need to get Belt back, then either Scooter back or trade for a 2B. They probably need to trade for a closer. Hopefully Pagan is not out too much longer.

I just think a lot of things came together at once, bad luck, injuries, Romo's meltdown it all added up.

    2. belt comes back today

you have changed your tune though....i think you should go back to look at your earlier posts re pagan that noted how important he was to the offense "even more than posey"

wasnt just offense, it was also defense and energy

granted...the romo implosions did little to improve the team's overall mood

      but we will see

the earliest pagan can come back in july 18 (baggs reporting) and that is "best case scenario"

in other words, they need a cf, 2nd baseman and closer and possibly a starter to actually compete

      too many holes...season over

and that is not an oversimplification

    3. I agree, Pagan is probably the MVP of the team. His absence is not the only problem and I think they could win without him if it was. So no, I have not changed my tune!

I think the holes are fillable, but Sabes needs to move fast. I would target Steve Cishek or even Huston Street for closer and Daniel Murphy for 2B. They might be able to get Juan Lagares from the Mets at the same time. There will be a price, but the season is not yet lost and flags fly forever. I don't think they can afford to wait around to see if the Affeldt/Casilla tandem works nor can they afford to wait to see if Scutaro can come back. If they keep losing at this pace, obviously, July 31 will be too late.

    4. From CSN, Baggarly today

As for that meeting, it came one day after Bochy and GM Brian Sabean met with a small council of team leaders they tasked with disseminating a message: Get mad, get a sense of urgency, play like it’s September now, every game is crucial, and if you want club officials to believe this team is worth investing in trade deadline improvements, the time to convince them is now.

As Sabean told Yahoo SportsTalk Live earlier this week: “They’ve got to play better and they’ve got to be more competitive and play better at home. If they don’t, then I guess turning into a pumpkin was bound to happen.”

This is the part I noticie:

"if you want club officials to believe this team is worth investing in trade deadline improvements, the time to convince them is now."

Sometimes you go for it; sometimes you don't.

If the team doesn't convince club officials, they won't invest.

    5. If they are not going to invest in the present at the trade deadline, then they need to trade as many pieces as they can to invest in the future. Pablo Sandoval would bring the most in return.
