Down on the Farm: 4/17/2014

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Sacramento River Cats 7-3:

Gary Brown(CF)- 1 for 4, BB, SB(4).  BA= .274.
Joe Panik(2B)- 3 for 4, 2B, SF.  BA= .271.
Andrew Susac(Catcher)- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(2), HBP.  BA= .333.
Juan Perez, Tony Abreu- 2 hits each.
Chris Heston(RHP)- 5.2 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.60.
Dan Runzler(LHP)- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.13.
George Kontos(RHP)- 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K.  ERA= 3.97.

If Brown averaged a hit, a walk and a SB for every 5 PA's, he'd a darn good leadoff batter!  Panik is heating up a bit.  Abreu played 3B in this one.

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels edged the Altoona Curve 2-1:

Angel Villalona(1B)- 1 for 2, BB, SF.  BA= .311.
Clayton Blackburn(RHP)- 6.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K, GO/AO= 10/3.  BA= 1.76.

In a very SSS, Angel Villalona seems to be starting to get the hang of situational hitting and a little plate discipline.  A nice Huddy type start for Blackburn.

High A  San Jose Giants crushed the Bakersfield Blaze 9-2:

Jesus Galindo(CF)- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .321.
Elliott Blair(LF)- 2 for 5, 2 HR(3).  BA= .357.
Mac Williamson(DH)- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .235.
Brian Ragira(1B)- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .262.
Chuckie Jones(RF)- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .205.
Blake Miller(3B)- 2 for 4, 2B, 3B.  BA= .194.
Martin Agosta(RHP)- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.93.
Jeff Soptic(RHP)- 3.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.79.

Nice game for the batters to pad their stat lines.  Agosta came out early due to pitch count considerations(32 in 1 inning).

Low A  Lexington Legends edged the Augusta Greenjackets 5-4:

Devin Harris(LF)- 2 for 3, HR(1), BB.  BA= .250.
Tyler Horan(RF)- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .302.
Keury Mella(RHP)- 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.16.

Horan and Harris are two hitters who might be able to help SJ if needed.  Why is Harris back in Augusta anyway?

  1. Saw the Richmond game...Not as attentive as I would like to be --with a bunch of people...Anyway.Blackburn looked good...not overpowering (low 90's, top, I think..a few balls had pop) but has 3-4 effective pitchers that he can control....And he's very poised,,,He breezed through the lineup the first time, then struggled a bit 4-7 inning while leaving the ball up a bit....Does really well when he keeps the ball down, which he is trying to work on with Grimsley and the coaches....Though U expect Blackburn to trim down even more, with the way he pitches, Big Daddy Reuschel is not a bad comp...The Giants could only be so lucky...Law got dinged for a homer in the 9th for his first run of the year, but got the job done..

Another Giant big boy that is looking good is indeed Angel Villalona...Looks much more comfortable and confident up there and not just widly swinging with power like last year...Has everything going right now...
