Eric Surkamp(LHP)- 7 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.90.
Gary Brown has a pattern of slumping after teammates get promoted. Nice rebound game for Surkamp.
AA Richmond Flying Squirrels blanked the Portland Sea Dogs 4-0:
Ryan Lollis(CF)- 2 for 3, 2 2B, BB. BA= .275.
Angel Villalona(1B)- 1 for 4, HR(5). BA= .241.

I love these lines that Flores puts up. They are so clean! He now has 109 K's against just 15 BB's in 113.1 IP on the season. Rapp is hitting .385 over his last 10 games and .295 for the month of July.

What does Gustavo Cabrera's OBP look like? His average isn't anything to write home about, but he always seems to have a couple of walks in his line. Considering how these international free agents tend to be free swingers, it's kind of refreshing to see the walks.
ReplyDelete.349 OBP according to baseball-reference.com
Deletewild swinger though, 16 BB vs. 23 K's in 88 AB. He really needs to knock the K's down a lot, nearly halving it, to be good.
OMG! We're talking about a 17 yo DSL player here, for crying out loud!
DeleteYeah, gotta say chopping up stats for low level minor league guys is a little much.
DeleteNon wild swingers, don't they tend to, or at least sometimes (so there is a possibility), strike out a lot as they work deep into the count?
DeleteI'm not sure why there is criticism here.
DeleteAll the comments made were valid, I thought it is understood that small samples is in effect. A 74% contact rate is a wild swinger so far. I didn't say he will continue that, but he does need to get it down if he expects to be good, I wanted to give an idea of what the standard is. And his average isn't anything to write home about. And it is nice to see all the walks. And where did I chop up his stats? I provided his full numbers.
What did I get wrong? I didn't even bring up age. :^)
ogc,
Delete"He really needs to knock the K's down a lot, nearly halving it would be good."
That, my friend, is NOT a valid criticism of a 17 yo playing in the DSL!! Let the kid play, for crissakes! He's doing some things well. He has PLENTY of time to work out anything he might be not doing well. Kids strike out! It's not even really a problem in this context!
ogc,
DeleteContext is everything. If you tell me that Gary Brown is striking out too much in AAA after a 3 year major college career and over 1000 professional AB's, I would say you raise a very good point. It's definitely something that has to improve of he's going to get eaten alive in the majors.
To say the same thing about a 17 yo kid in his very first year of pro experience in the lowest professional level, well, that's really taking it way too far and crosses the line into absurdity.

Crick struck out the first 7 he faced. Then got in a bit of trouble. Tame the wildness, get that third pitch going, he's top 10 in baseball.
ReplyDeleteMatt Duffy is a nice sleeper story, and he's why we do this stuff. Keep it up. Matt Duffy!
Love the line from Surkamp. Totally agree on Flores. Beat reporter David Lee gives the good news that the fastball is going up to 93-94. If that thing has movement... Giants have something because he has sweet control.
The pitchers are definitely keeping our spirits up this year.
I would like to see them arrive in 2014, if not 2013.
DeleteBut realistically, maybe 2015 to get acclimate in San Francisco...perhaps 2016 to contribute significantly.

ReplyDeleteWow, Ian Kennedy traded away for hardly anything.
Sometimes you get a Scutaro without having to give up a Wheeler.
DeleteThings can get random occasionally.
We didn't trade Wheeler for a Scutaro, we got Carlos Beltran, an MVP level hitter. Unfortunately, he didn't hit like that until we were out of the race.
DeleteWe only gave up Charlie Culberson for Scutaro, so we got Scutaro for hardly anything.
Two relievers and a compensation pick is hardly anything for a pitcher like Kennedy who up to last season was their Lincecum, though I guess ironically, he has been since as well.
Funny thing on that one - both GMs were trading for the same players a 2nd time. Musical chairs in the NL West...
DeleteAnd in our case, we didn't have to give up Wheeler for Scutaro.
DeleteIt's sort of random because you don't have to get a MVP type player (but without the right 'chemistry') to get MVP type production (or inspiration).
2 completely different situations. Remember the Giants also last year acquired Hunter Pence, the guy they really wanted in 2011, but got aced out for by Philly, and gave up 3 pretty good prospects to get him.
DeleteHow often has a team traded for a guy like Scutaro and had him hit almost .400 for the remainder of the season? Not very!

ReplyDeleteOrioles pick up Norris for Hoes, #6 BA rank prospect before the season, plus a competitive balance pick and another prospect, Hader, #19 LH SP. Belt is worth a lot more than that, I think, unless Hoes really broke out this season.
Congrats to Roger Kieschnick on his first major league at bat, single and RBI, with family, friends, high school coach, even his San Jose host family in the crowd. He should have his family print out his batting average now, he's batting 1.000!
