Down on the Farm: 7/19/2013

Even more good stuff last night.

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies held off the Tacoma Rainiers 3-2:

Gary Brown(CF)- 2 for 4.  BA= .246.
Brett Pill(1B)- 1 for 4, HR(16).  BA= .340.
Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 1 for 2, 2B, BB, SB(1).  BA= .273.

Heath Hembree(RHP)- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K, Save(21).   ERA= 4.43.

Good that Hembree did not give up the walks in front of the dinger.  He allows a run after 9 scoreless appearances.

Angel Villalona(1B)- 3 for 3 2B, HR(3).  BA= .274.
Phil McCormick(LHP)- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.24.

Wow!  Angel V showing he can hang with the AA guys!

Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 2 for 4, HR(3).  BA= .377.

Derek Law(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.70.

3'rd QS in a row for Blackburn.  Dominant peripheral numbers in this one.  His overall season line is 5-4, 4.26, 95 IP, 26 BB, 107 K's, GO/AO= 1.42.

Low A  Lakewood Blueclaws scored 3 runs in the top of the 9'th inning to edge the Augusta Greenjackets 3-2:

Matt Duffy(DH)- 2 for 4, 2 SB(21).  BA= .308.
Mitch Delfino(3B)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .232.
Chuckie Jones(RF)- 0 for 2, 2 BB, 2 SB(10).  BA= .213.

Tyler Mizenko(RHP)- 1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 2.24.

Encouraging start for Stratton, although not quite the dominant numbers you would hope for.  Rare BS(3) by Mizenko against 21 Saves.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes came from behind to bury the Tri-City Dust Devils 10-7:

Tyler Hollick(CF)- 3 for 5, BB.  BA= .307.
Brandon Bednar(2B)- 2 for 5, BB, SB(3).  BA= .298.
Jeremy Sy(SS)- 3 for 6, HR(5), SB(8).  BA= .286.

Lorenzo Mendoza allowed 6 unearned runs in the first 2 innings as the Volcanoes committed 6 errors in the game including 3 by Jeremy Sy.

Rookie AZL  Giants pounded the Rangers 12-3:

Christian Arroyo(SS)- 1 for 5, HR(1).  BA= .254.
Ryder Jones(DH)- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .422.
Cristian Paulino(CF)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .286.
Nick Vander Tuig(RHP)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Matt? Young(RHP)- 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.60.
Carlos Alvarado(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.13.

The Giants top 2 picks both go deep.  It will be interesting to see if either of them get any respect in BA's League Top 20 this offseason.  Jones, in particular, scorching the desert.  Vander Tuig make his pro debut.  I imagine the Giants will be conservative with him after he pitched through the College WS.  milb.com continues to list Matt Young, an 18 yo HS draftee on the Giants roster and in boxscores.  This has to be a mistake, right?  Matt Young was drafted by the Marlins.  The Giants drafted Pat Young out of Villanova.

DSL  Giants were idle.

  1. Arroyo and Jones go back-2-back in the 4th! Good to see some power, and Ryder is absolutely cruising right now. I watched some of the Fresno and San Jose games last night on the net. Blackburn is fun to watch, works quick, keeps the hitters off balance. He looks like an old pro! His breaking ball has tons of movement, but he hung it pretty bad on 3 occasions that I noticed last night. One was smacked into LF for a single, another was ripped foul, and the final one allowed a 2-run base hit.

The Griz did a pretty good job of getting to Taijuan Walker in the 5th. I love watching that guy. The end of the game was pretty funky. Hembree had the tying and go-ahead runs on base, 3-ball count, and caught Triunfel napping off 2nd to end it. Bonehead play!

  2. It is early and SSS, but Angel, after a slow six game start, has been hitting over 900 OPS, which he hit over after his ten game slow start at SJ, but before his cold streak just before his promotion. To me, it was almost like the Giants told him he was going to be promoted but had to wait, and he started pouting, because why promote him when he was struggling badly and not when he was hot?

While I greatly respect your opinions, I don't think you should accuse anyone of "pouting" without actual knowledge as that term carries too much negative connotation. I also don't see the Giants ever promoting someone who is "pouting".

I suspect that the swap of Oropesa for AnVil has more to do Oropesa's struggle than AnVil's performance. However, I do hope that the Giants' FO saw something in AnVil that us casual fans don't see. If he keeps up the hitting, I hope to see AnVil getting a cup of coffee at the end of the year. That would be a good story.

    1. I agree with this. I saw Villalona play several times this year and he looked like he was having fun out there.

I think it's just a simple case that the Giants thought both Ricky and Angel V would benefit from a change of scenery, probably more so on Ricky's part.

  4. Vander Tuig is going to be the steal of the draft. Book it. Mentally tough, prepares, strives. Has a nice portfolio of pitches and is ready to compete. Giants got a huge steal.

Agreed on the Young data slip. I was all excited for a second - 3rd youngest pitcher in the Gints system? Hope they get it cleared up soon. Pat Young was a steal as well. Game the draft at your own risk. Giants got some big arms while half of MLB drafted seniors, and then got some more nice picks while bonus baby HS kids were pursued. I'd add "2nd tier" to that bonus baby HS kids, because obviously the best ones were already taken. Drafting for consensus is a suckers bet. Greybeards did great.
