Down on the Farm: 7/14/2013

AAA  Sacramento River Cats and Fresno Grizzlies scored all 3 runs for the game in the 10'th inning with the Cats taking the walkoff win 2-1:

Juan Perez(RF)- 2 for 5, 3B, SB(14).  BA= .310.
Ehire Adrianza(SS)- 1 for 2, 2 BB. BA= .313.
Mitch Lively(RHP)- 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 5.77.
Brett Bochy(RHP)- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.39.
Dan Runzler(LHP)- 0.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 5.49.

Lively has kind of alternated strong games with poor ones.  Melonhead Jr. has a 1.38 ERA over his last 10 appearances with 15 K's against just 2 BB's in 13 IP.  Runzler just can't seem to get any traction.

AA  Bowie Baysox beat the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-2:

Adam Duvall(3B)- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .250.
Mark Minicozzi(DH)- 1 for 2, HR(8), BB.  BA= .337.
Brett Krill(RF)- 2 for 4.  BA= .282.
Jack Snodgrass(LHP)- 6 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 11/2.  ERA= 3.47.

High A  Lake Elsinore Storm out hit the San Jose Giants 14-9:

Brock Bond(DH)- 3 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .261.
Mac Williamson(RF)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .273.
Ricky Oropesa(1B)- 2 for 4, HBP.  BA= .400.
Travious Relaford(2B)- 1 for 1, 2B, BB.  BA= .194.
Austin Fleet(RHP)- 1.1 IP, 6 H, 7 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.57.

Low A Charleston River Dogs scored a walkoff win in the bottom of the 10'th inning 5-4:

Matt Duffy(SS)- 3 for 4, 3B.  BA= .310.
Alberto Robles(2B)- 2 for 4.  BA= .275.

Yes, Duffy is a bit old for the league, but I really like the numbers he is putting up with an OBP of .408 with a reversed K/BB of 38/41.  He has just enough power to keep pitchers from pounding him up in the zone.  With 17 SB's, he at least has enough speed to take the extra base and make pitchers watch him when he's on base.  I don't know if he can stick at SS, but if he can, he's a serious prospect.

Short Season  Spokane Indians doubled up the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 8-4:

Brandon Bednar(2B)- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .284.
Tyler Horan(RF)- 1 for 3, 2B, BB, SF.  BA= .227.
Shilo McCall(LF)- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .257.
Cameron McVey(RHP)- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.40.

Rookie AZL  Giants were idle.

DSL Game 1  Giants edged the Orioles1 3-2 in 11 innings:

Carlos Valdez(LF, 19 yo)- 2 for 5, HR(2), SB(4).  BA= .253.
Marco Guzman(2B-SS, 18 yo)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .233.
Raffi Vizcaino(RHP, 17 yo)- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.53.
Shawn Gomez(RHP, 18 yo)- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.52.

DSL Game 2  Giants dominated the Orioles1  9-1:

Nicol Parra(CF, 18 yo)- 1 for 2, 2 BB, SB(11).  BA= .254.
Jean Angomas(LF, 18 yo)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .244.
Royel Astacio(1B, 19 yo)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB, SB(2).  BA= .165.
Hengerber Medina(SS, 18 yo)- 1 for 2, 3B, BB.  BA= .167.
Eber Guzman(RHP, 20 yo)-6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 2.75.

  1. Any chance they skip Duffy up to Richmond next year? Tomlinson doesn't seem to be a reason to hold him back. I would like to see him get challenged next year.

    1. I see Duffy as more of a 1 level at a time kind of prospect.

    2. Totally agree that he's a one level at a time kind.

Let's take a look at the past for .408 OBP who are Matt's age in SALLY, or so. Shawn Payne was similar in 2012, .413 OBP, almost same SLG. Dave Freitas had .409 and almost same SLG in 2011, he had a nice season in 2012, but pretty bad 2013 so far. Nobody profiled that close in 2010 or 2009, Chase d-Arnaud was the closest, he had a nice run getting promoted to Advanced A in the same season in 2009, but never did much of anything in the minors after that, though he did made the majors in 2011, only he didn't do that well. Brock Bond profiled the closest in 2008, though not as good overall, and we know what has happened to him. Jason Donald was the closes in 2007, very close, plus he's a SS too. He got promoted to Advanced A that season, did well there too, but struggled as he rose, though got enough tries in AAA to hit OK (for the league), and make the majors, where he was an so-so hitter, utility IF.

The recent history of prospects who had similar numbers at the same age is not sparkling with great outcomes so far. Bond is the only one who kept up the high OBP as he rose, but the Giants never thought enough of him to bring him to the majors, nor did any team thought enough of him to steal him from the Giants via the Rule 5 draft in the off-season. So Matt has a tough road ahead of him in making the majors, though not impossible, hence why he'll probably have to prove out at each level before making the Giants.

    3. Even if he's old for the level and the odds are stacked, its nice to have a guy rank 7th in OBP in the Sally and 15th in OPS. There are a bunch of bonus babies he's there with: Boyd, Allie, Murphy, Nick Williams, Gallo, Elander, Plawecki, Josh Bell. They'll fly on quick, he'll have to grind out.

Maybe in a couple of years with Arroyo/Jones/Gustavo/Javier we'll have some hitting prospects in the Sally.

    4. And with what we have in Fresno (Adrianza) and Richmond (total organizational flotsam and jetsum in Ciracao and Stromsmoe), I would not be adverse to NOW moving one or both of DUFFY and TOMLINSON up a level..Nothing wrong with facing a challenge..They will know oon enough if it is a overmatch..But DUFFY is not getting anything out of SAL now...move him up, sink or swim...

  2. I, too, am intrigued by Matt Duffy - and have been for awhile. I think I'd have to sneak him into the back end of my Top 25 at this point.

    1. Top 25 might be a bit rich, but his numbers definitely have my attention.

    2. Same here on Duffy..have been mentioning him as one of my dark horse faves for quite awhile.(Along with Fleet, who got hammered yesterdy!!!)..He just seems like a BALLPLAYER and the type the Giants like..Maybe very Noonanish.....Can hit, can get on base big time, and can run the bases..Good college program (LBSU).Love to see him moved up to either Sj or, even better, Richmond....Richmond especially has garbage at SS right now with organizational filler Ciriaca and Stromsmoe

  3. Good article on Mac W from Bernie P: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130713&content_id=53603656&vkey=news_sf&c_id=sf

Kyle Crick was wild yesterday in the futures game. Galindo made the final out of the game, wearing some sweet knee socks.

  4. STOP THE PRESSES! According to BA's database we got Dylan Brooks!

Only guy in the first 31 we didn't get according to my read is Brandon Zajac, the lefty in the 23rd. 32 out of 40 - the Greybeards draft to sign, that was my main point.

This draft is looking great if you ask me.

    1. Oh man! I absolutely LOVED the Dylan Brooks scouting video. I mean, there is probably a reason he wasn't drafted until the 31'st round, but there has to be huge ceiling there.

    2. I think the Giants sneaked in early on the draft-HS guys at the end. I thought they had a decent chance to get Brooks/Riley/Cieri and that proved to be correct. I even won a bet with Fla-Giant. The Arroyo as Alex Bregman theory is all mine now. (That was the bet)

  5. I only count 30 signings of the 40, who have I missed? I do not see any reports of Cieri signing. Has he?

    1. Nope. He's going to be a Terp at the U of Maryland. Garrett Hughes and Mike Connolly have signed.

    2. Thanks. I needed to go to their Twitter accounts to find that they signed.

    3. Pretty much. There is an article on Connolly...

    4. reading Connolly's twitter made me kinda root against the kid. Seems a bit a DB...

    5. If I was an agent, the first move after signing would be to take away that twitter account.
