DeleteI thought it was fun to listen to and covered a lot of topics you've discussed here. Good to hear the person behind this great blog! I agree with you I liked the Freddie Sanchez trade because he was a key player in the 2010 WS Championship. I'm wondering if the Giants should bring in a coach like a Brett Butler to help Brown with his stolen base skills.. His batting average against RHP is also a serious concern currently .194. Its been fun checking out the Richmond box-scores lately because they're scoring a lot of runs.. Nice to see Ricky O playing again.. I'm wishing tonight that the Giants had drafted more starting pitchers in the previous 2 or 3 drafts before the 2012 draft. Its part of the reason for their lack of starting pitching depth besides Mike Kickham in the high minors.

DeleteThe old saying goes, "you can never have too much pitching." That's part of why I've always said that if the Giants had a choice of shipping Zack Wheeler or Gary Brown to the Mets, they picked the wrong guy. Of course, we will never know for sure if they had that choice, but I hated losing Wheels even though I supported and still support the trade because of the circumstances.
Yep, good to see Ricky back in the lineup. He had a collision with an opposing player while on defense at 1B and got shaken up a bit. They carried the other guy off the field on a stretcher though. Hope the other guy is OK too, but yeah, good to have Ricky back. Memo to opposing baserunners: you DON'T want to collide with Ricky Oropesa!
I forgot which beat writer asked this - I believe it was Baggerly - but one of them asked Sabean point blank whether the choice was Wheeler/Brown or just Wheeler, and he said that the Mets only wanted Wheeler. So that mystery is ended.
DeleteI liked the Franchez trade irrespective of how he helped us win (though that certainly helps). Alderson was clearly starting to show the cracks in his prospect-ability that season and we got a major league starter using him in trade. Great trade, much like getting Randy Winn for Foppert and Yorvit.
Speaking of Winn, I hope that Winn was helping out Brown in spring training (I believe he contributes as an extra coach, like Kent, Will the Thrill, and others). He had speed too but during his years with the Giants, our coaches were able to help him learn to be a very effective base stealing, dropping his CS greatly, and he was already good before, if I remember right, 80% but with the Giants I think he pushed it to 90%, thereabouts. He should be able to pass along those tips to Brown.
Or maybe he learned something from Dave Roberts while DR was a Giant. Roberts learned from the master, Maury Wills, and I was hoping he would coach in our system after his career, but he wanted to return to his home team SD Padres, where he has been a coach in their system. But he played under Bochy twice, so maybe if the Padres ever drop him, we can pick him up.
Speaking of returning home, Brett Butler cried like a baby fawning over signing a deal with the Dodgers as a free agent right after he was a Giants player, as LA was his home town, and I don't think that many in Giants management remember that very fondly. I know I certainly didn't. So I would not expect him to come into camp teaching anytime soon.
I thought the Giants picked up pretty good pitchers in Crick and Blackburn in 2011...
Finally got to listen to this. Good stuff. I like the banter with those guys. Wheeler was definitely the target of the Mets. There is an article about them preparing to deal Beltran from 2 months out, and Wheeler grew to laser like focus. My small criticism of the trade would be they had an artificial deadline before the actual deadline because Don Carlos had to approve the trade. Taking them closer to that might have yielded lesser pitchers being given up. But most likely not. Sabean is never one to play that game though, he wants what he wants.
ReplyDeleteAt the time, with Twitter going wild, I was more upset about Brown than Wheeler when it was one or the other (or both, which flashed for a sec!)
Anyways, good to put a voice behind the excellent blog.
Sabean understands that in baseball, you often have to live in the present and that a perfect solution is rarely ever possible, that you need to accept limitations in what can do in situations. He also understands that it is better to find a good enough chair, before the off-season free agent music stops, instead of finding yourself without a key component for the upcoming season. So yes, he wants what he wants and his laser focus is on getting that checklist done, instead of still needing something when the season starts.
