Minor league roster assignments are in with a few surprises:
AAA Fresno Grizzlies: Rotation: Chris Heston, Mike Kickham, Yusmeiro Petit, Boof Bonser, Andrew Kown. Bullpen: Dan Runzler, Steve Edlefsen, Jean Machi, Mitch Lively, Ramon Ramirez, Sandy Rosario, Jake Dunning, Heath Hembree. Catcher: Johnny Monell, Jackson Williams. IF: Kensuke Tanaka, Carter Jurica, Juan Perez, Todd Linden, Juan Ciriaco. OF: Gary Brown, Francisco Peguero, Roger Kieschnick, Cole Gillespie, Chris Dominguez.
It's not clear where in the IF Juan Perez will be playing. It is also not clear how Gillespie and Dominguez are going to get playing time with Brown, Pegs and Roger K needing to play full time. I agree with Shankbone that Brown is going to tear it up.
AA Richmond Flying Squirrels: Rotation: Ryan Bradley, Justin Fitzgerald, Chris Gloor, Craig Westcott, Jack Snodrass. Bullpen: Fabio Castillo, Omar Javier,Daryl Maday, Phil McCormick, Edwin Quirarte, Scott Shuman, Jose Valdez, Tom Vessella. Catchers: Andrew Susac, Mark Wagner. IF: Ehire Adrianza, Adam Duvall, Mark Minicozzi, Ricky Oropesa, Joe Panik, Skyler Stromsmoe. OF: Javier Herrera, Brett Krill, Ryan Lollis, Jarrett Parker.
The pitching is uninspiring to say the least. We'll see if the EL helps them put up respectable numbers. Susac gets the promo! Panik officially moves to 2B. Aggressive promotion for Krill who played for Augusta last year. It will be interesting to see how Parker does in the big, bad EL after hitting under .250 for 2 seasons in San Jose.
High A San Jose Giants: Rotation: Kyle Crick, Clayton Blackburn, Edwin Escobar, Adalberto Mejia, Chris Marlowe. Bullpen: Josh Osich, Cody Hall, Luis Rojas, Jorge Bucardo, Bryce Bandilla, Ty Blach, Jeff Soptic, Clarlos Teller. Catchers: Jeff Arnold, Eliezer Zambrano. IF: Ryan Cavan, Angel Villalona, Kelby Tomlinson, Bobby Haney, Ydwin Villegas OF: Mac Williamson, Shawn Payne, Devin Harris, Chris Lofton, Elliott Blair.
That's gotta be one of the top prospect rotations in baseball. If you go to games, you will want to stick around to get a look at the flamethrowers in the late innings. Mac Williamson is definitely the guy to watch on offense along with Angel Villalona and Shawn Payne.
Low A Augusta Greenjackets: Not posted on Greenjackets' website yet.

Mano, I liked Garrett (and Alex Burg). Hard knock baseball. Hope they get a second chance with another team. Maybe Buechele's release has something to do with Cavan backtracking to SJ to play 3B.
ReplyDeleteWhere is Boch jr?
ReplyDeleteDunno. Good question. Maybe his arm is still tired?
DeleteYeah, curious how they are going to handle OF in AAA, those three got to start the vast majority of games, so where Gillaspie and Dominguez will get ABs is a question mark. However, I suspect that Quiroz is only up here until Hector is ready and at that point, Gillespie will go to Giants and only Dominguez will be the backup OF.
ReplyDeleteI think that Brown will have a blast in AAA too, and while I don't think the Giants will move him to the majors this season, he should do well enough that he should be in the mix for CF in 2014, I think.
Yeah, I was surprised by how sparse AA is, particularly compared to Advanced A. However, if the pitchers do great enough in Cal League, they will have no problem getting promoted to AA, as nobody will be holding them back in AA. With Ehire around and Crawford looking like the real thing at SS, may as well move Panik to 2B now so that he can prepare for his eventual role with us, assuming he beats out Noonan for 2B eventually. It also gives him flexibility should the Giants decide to trade him (I still think he's on their no-trade list, though).
Interesting offense in San Jose, to go with their great pitching staff. Could be a lot of HRs with Mac and AnVil there, plus Payne setting the table ahead of them.
I'm hearing JCPerez is slated for 3B. Brett Bochy has some arm fatigue.
ReplyDeleteGiven that Boch Jr. was shut down with arm fatigue at the end of last season and already has it this year, well, I would say that does not bode well for the future, especially with 1 TJ already under his belt.
DeleteIs it typical for a rookie like Stratton to start off at Augusta? I was hoping to see him this year at San Jose.
ReplyDeleteI would say that a first round draft pick out of a major college program would generally be expected to start out in High A ball, so yes, I am surprised by Stratton's assignment. The Giants have a history of being very cautious with their assignments of players coming off injuries, so I would speculate that might be the reason. I would hope that if he pitches well there, they would move him up quickly because of a first round draft pick out a major college has to prove himself at Low A, then he's almost a bust before he even gets started.
DeleteI've heard that High Single A is equivilant to a major college program. I'm wondering if the same holds true for Martin Agosta. Is it a bad sign if Agosta stays at Low A for the whole year. I know St Marys is not a major college program, but their conference has some talent too.. Patrick Wisdom played on St Marys ..

I think part of the problem is that SJ is already overloaded. Richmond's rotation on the other hand is quite weak. I expect someone to be moved up in the middle of the year.
DeleteI"ll second that. I wouldn't be shocked to see Stratton go from Augusta to Richmond and bypass SJ. Clayton Blackburn is a candidate for early promotion if he continues to show advanced skills at SJ. Escobar could be fast tracked too.
DeleteThe G's could potentially have 2 spots available in the rotation next year (wcs), so I think the kids will have extra incentive to have big years. Start the year with Kamp, Heston, Kick; let crick and Stratton take the spots by the end of the year.
