Game Wrap 08-10-2010: Cubs 8 Giants 6

Tim Lincecum had one of the worst starts of his career. The Giants offense was plucky enough to almost pick him up, but a late bullpen failure put the game out of reach. Key lines:

Emmanuel Burriss- 2 for 3. With Sanchez hitting so poorly, maybe this game earned Burriss some more playing time.

Buster Posey- 3 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .345. One of the doubles was a gift on a drop by Tyler Colvin at the warning track in front of the 401 ft sign in left-center field, but Posey had a great game. He may be a Son of the South, but the cool climes of SF seem to have re-energized him.

Pablo Sandoval- 3 for 5. BA= .257. No power, but it's a start.

Tim Lincecum- 4 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.41. Tough to imagine the Giants making a run without Tim leading the way, so let's hope he gets this figured out again.

Santiago Casilla- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.32. Nice, nice performance by Casilla to give the offense some time to get back into the game. I guess he's their long man and emergency starter now?

With the L, the Giants fall to 2.5 games behind the division leading Padres who got 2 dingers from Ryan Ludwick in a 4-1 win over the Pirates. Mike Pelfry outdueled Ubaldo Jimenez as the Rockies lost to the Mets 1-0 to fall into 4'th place 7.5 games off the pace. The Dodgers clubbed the Phillies 15-9 to remain 7 games behind the Pads, but they climbed over the Rockies into 3'rd place. Arizona beat Milwaukee 2-1 to remain 21.5 games behind bringing up the rear of the pack. In the Wild Card Race, St Louis topped Cincinnati 8-4 in a game that featured a first inning jawing match and tussle. The loss left Cincinnati in second place in the NL Central by percentage points and tied with the Giants for the Wild Card. The Phillies loss to the Dodgers kept them 1 game behind the Giants.

Barry Zito tries to right the ship tonight against Tom Gorzelanny who has pitched fairly well this year. If Zito is up to his recent snuff, this is one the Giants should win.

  1. Right now, I think it would be better to get hits from Pablo than power. We are not currently relying on him for power, and for him, I think he just needs to get into a good rhythm first and get on base a lot, then he can punch in the power after he got the hitting part down.

If we can get Posey and Panda going, that plus Torres and Huff would get our offense flowing easily. Ishikawa, meanwhile, has been starting to turn on the power himself, he already has more extra-base hits in August than all of July, I guess as he got more comfortable starting semi-regularly.

Yeah, pretty shocked about Lincecum. According to Carl Steward writing for Baggerly, Lincecum has been trying to handle his mechanics without his dad's help, and you can see what the results are this season.

I don't see what the problem is about getting help from his dad, unless it is an ego problem where he wants credit for what he has done and not be viewed as a creation of his dad (which the Steward article promulgates). He should remember that Barry Bonds was getting help from his dad, Bobby Bonds, up to the day the senior Bonds passed away.

  2. Good analysis on Timmeh, OGC. I think it is natural for a young man to want to step away from "daddy" and prove his independence. It is, technically, immaturity on Timmeh's part, but understandable immaturity. Hopefully he grows out of this phase quickly.

This all makes a comment made by Chris on the "Father Knows Best hour" a few month's back take on a bit more meaning. He said that he and Timmeh had not talked in "month's". He stressed that it was not a big deal, and it was not challenged by the host, but it was a pretty big comment that stuck with me since.

  3. Thanks for the comments, guys. I agree that Pablo needs to just concentrate on making solid contact and forget HR's for awhile.
