Down on the Farm: 08-08-2010

AAA Albuquerque Isotopes zapped the Fresno Grizzlies 8-2:

Emmanuel Burriss- 1 for 3, 2B. BA= .295
Brett Pill- 1 for 4, HR(15). BA= .275.
Tyler Graham- 2 for 2, 2 2B. BA= .351.
Craig Whitaker- 3 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.60.

Whitaker gets the start here. Not sure if this is a new development plan or an emergency start. Not a great line but Albuquerque is a notorious hitter's park.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels exploded for a 16-8 win over the Portland Sea Dogs:

Darren Ford- 4 for 6, 2 2B. BA= .254.
Nick Noonan- 2 for 6, 2B, HR(3). BA= .272.
Thomas Neal- 4 for 6, 2B. BA= .295.
Conor Gillaspie- 2 for 5, 2 2B, SF. BA= .292.
Sharlon Schoop- 4 for 5, 2B, HR(2). BA= .294.

Pretty much everybody in the Squirrels' offense got hot all at once. It's not like it's just for one game either. This has been building for awhile.

High A San Jose Giants dumped the Bakersfield Blaze 4-2:

Francisco Peguero- 3 for 5, SB(37). BA= .314.
Juan Perez- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .297.
Kyle Nicholson- 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 5.98.
Jason Stoffel- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 5.01.

Stoffel's line for his last 9 games: 0-0, 2.00, 9 IP, 4 BB, 14 K's.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets edged the Asheville Tourists 4-3:

Chris Dominguez- 2 for 4. BA= .257.
Tommy Joseph- 3 for 4, HR(14). BA= .233.
Luke Anders- 1 for 3, HR(12). BA= .296.
Andy Reichard- 7 IP, 10 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 3.69.
Chris Wilson- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(1). ERA= 0.00.

Tommy J is hitting .320 over his last 10 games. Is Wilson the closer for Augusta now? What is Jose Casilla's role now?

Short Season Eugene Emeralds trounced the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 9-1:

Adam Duvall- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .289.
Dan Burkhart- 4 for 4, 2 2B. BA= .714.
Seth Rosin- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 1.93.
Aaron King- 3 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 4.50.

Is Dan Burkhart going to be a gem from the 2010 draft? He's still young for a college draftee at age 21, and he bats lefthanded. He's from a major D1 program. I could see him developing quite quickly into a nice complement to Buster Posey. The Giants are going to have some decisions to make about PT between him, Tommy Joseph and Hector Sanchez next year in San Jose. Could Burkhart jump all the way to AA? I think they are just keeping Seth Rosin loose the rest of the way. We should get a chance to really see what he can do in SJ next year. Typical outing for Aaron King who is going to have to get his stuff under control to amount to anything.

Rookie AZL Giants out hit the Royals 14-10 in 12 innings:

Wes Hobson- 3 for 6, 2 2B, BB. BA= .305.
Brice Cutspec- 2 for 7, 3B. BA= .330.
Charlie Jones- 3 for 6, 3B, BB. BA= .274.
Joe Staley- 3 for 6, 2B, 3B. BA= .223.
Alex Burg- 3 for 6, 2B. BA= .333.
Johnathon DeBerry- 4 for 6. BA= .261.
Austin Fleet- 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.32.
Matt Graham- 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.50.
Jake Dunnington- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 0.42.
Gaspar Santiago- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.70.

Nice game to pad those stat lines.

DSL Giants were idle.

There is an excellent, well-researched fanpost on possible upcoming draft pick signings by the Giants by fla-giant over on mccoveychronicles.com. It's under Recommended Fanposts. I highly recommend reading it. Sounds like a lot more help could be on the way soon. exciting stuff. Putting 2 and 2 together, I wonder if the Giants pulled out of the international market in order to invest in some of the draftees who will require above-slot money to sign?

  1. DrB,

Keep the great stuff coming..I try to read it everyday...Great to see the kids in Richmond hitting...Between, Belt (if you include his limited number of ABs), Neal, Gillespie and Noonan you got 4 of the top 30 averages in the EL..Not bad...And Noonan, seems to be doing very good for his age now that he is healthy....None of these guys will be ready next year (maybe Belt) but in two years (or late next year) they might provide a lot of competition on the ML level....OTOH, the lack of pitching throughout the minors really bothers me..almost like we are on the other end of the spectrum we used to be on..Hopefully, the next draft focuses on pitchers...

  2. Thanks for the tip on FLA-Giants post. It was excellent! I have seen his posts in the past few weeks and have been very impressed with him, he'll probably lure me back to MCC, I had weaned my addiction a few times before but always get sucked in! Just reading the stuff there made me crazy, though, I had to stop

SteveVA, that is the beauty of what Sabean has built on the major league roster, we control most of the guys for another 3-6 years and can extend most to the full 6 years, I think, barring injury. But there's Wheeler and if they can find a J-Sanchez or Brian Wilson (he could be starting now if they had another closer) every 3-4 years, they are covered for the next 6 years at the starting pitching position.

Plus, they have still focused on pitching on an overall basis, drafting more pitchers than hitters despite there being more hitters than pitchers on most rosters. I wouldn't worry about their pitching quite yet.

Did not remember/know that Noonan was injured. He is still very young for AA, and even if he repeated, he would still be very young for the league (22 vs. average pitchers age of 24.3 YO). I thought he was ready to make the jump this season, but apparently the EL strong set of pitcher's parks there affected him greatly, despite lack of reliance on power for his value as a player. Still, his strikeout rate was OK except for July, and it looked like he was figuring things out in early June when he got injured, and that injury had set him back until this month.

What are your thoughts on Brock Bond DrB? I'm not impressed. I see people on MCC and elsewhere sing the praises of his minor's numbers but they clearly don't understand MLE (part of the craziness that keeps me away).

Do you think Schoop can become a utility guy? Seems to be his ceiling now, what do you think?

Belt was apparently took out early in yesterday's game, causing some to speculate that he might be brought up. Burriss has actually been called up, been waiting to see who got DFAed, Wellemeyer would be my guess, I think they like Casilla.

  3. I would be upset if they dumped Casilla and kept Wellemeyer. Pitchers with 97-99 MPH heat don't grow in trees, but you can pick up a Wellemeyer off the waiver wire most any time.

Brock Bond? Very one dimensional player. Love the OBP, but is there anything else there? I'd think the Giants future 2B is either Noonan or Culberson at this point.

The pitching in the minors is not a huge concern yet, but I'd like to see them go back to it in the next draft.

  4. Yeah, DrB, I agree with your assessment regarding their lack of interest in international vs. FLA-Giants's excellent assessment that there are a number of players that the Giants might sign for much over cap for that pick.

And I agree about Noonan or Culberson (amazing how he has hit himnself into relevancy) being future 2B starter.

And totally agree about Casilla, velocity like that is rare.

  5. DrB and OGC - The pitching is not a major cocern yet becasue right now the Giants have 5 good starters that could be pitching in SF for the next 3-4 years..However, if yo udeal a SP (Sanchez) in the off-season,,your are getting pretty thin..OPbviously, a FA starter would have to be signed..but there is nothing in AAA or AA theat can start in the MLs (i see Sosa as a reliever)..Tanner, exept for yeasterday, has done well in AA ball but his stuff for the ML level is questionable..After that, you have to go down to Buchardo and Surkamp in SJ...Pretty dicey right now...Looking forward to the return of Wheeler as a starter next season..

  6. Good news, Wellemeyer DFA to bring up Burriss.

SteveVA, I don't see the Giants trading away Sanchez unless they are blown away by the deal. And given his (relative) inconsistency I don't expect another team to blow the Giants away.

But even if they are blown away, that gives us a real improvement in the lineup, and then the Giants can make due with a 5th starter off the FA market, that would be tolerable because almost every other team struggles with their 5th starter, so it would not be a disadvantage but a status quo there for us. And Hacker would probably be acceptable for half a season before picking up someone's OK starter for a second tier prospect in the second half.

Plus, there is the guy we got in the Texas trade, Main, I assume he's all over the place now because the Giants are fixing his mechanics now, but if he can figure it out, he could be ready by mid-season too (very outside chance right now, but still).

Also, Waldis Joaquin was a starter before and only 24 for next season, he could be moved back into rotation for 2011, he should be recovered from his TJS by now.

And Henry Sosa is available as well. And Maday is probably a closer option for #5 than Tanner.

Plenty of back of rotation options who we could go to in order to fill up half a season of starts before picking up someone mid-season, if necessary, though I would probably prefer a major league FA to who we have in the minors.

  7. I am not sure Maday is even on the depth chart anymore. His stint in Fresno was HORRENDOUS, and his number in AA are only above average, not stellar.

Hacker, too, has regressed back to career norms. I don't think he has a prayer of getting any SF time any time soon.

With the loss of Martinez AND Welly, the G's really have no internal options for a spot start in the org. I would have to agree that Sosa and Tanner are the only pitchers who could even be considered for action if one of the starters were to get injured at this point. Maybe Yourkin, but I really don't know much about him...

  8. The concern about pitching in the organization is well taken. I believe I was somewhat advocating for the Giants to draft pitching high in this year's draft. I still think I might be happier with pitchers they could have gotten in the first two rounds than I am with Brown and Parker, not that I think Brown and Parker are particularly bad picks. I think next year's draft really needs to go heavy on pitching if it's available when the Giants draft.

The Giants also need Wheeler to be healthy and good next year and need a breakout or two from someone like a Seth Rosin or an Austin Fleet. They seem to be giving some bullpen guys a look at starter here late in the season too.

The farm is always fascinating to watch.

  9. OGC - I agree that there is no doubt that if the Giants traded Sanchez for help in the line-up and added a good starter via FA, it would improve the ML roster. And that would be a good thing....but it also would thin out the orgnaizational pitching depth...I see most of the pitchers you mention as question marks and very suspect as potentila ML STARTERS (I just don't see anybody close that is a sure 4th-5th starter; let alone a top 3---Hopefully some of the younger kids change that, including a healthy Wheeler)...Anyway, I hope you are correct and I am just makign am moutain out of a mole hill..time will tell..Either way, the Giants need to bring in more top end young pitchers via the draft (or trade)

  10. I don't disagree with anything said about how poorly the guys I mentioned might do, I was just thinking that with our rotation and developing offense, we would still be competitive even with a huge question mark in the #5 starter position for up to half a season, before the Giants pick up a better solution somewhere.

#5 starter is not a crucial position normally, but obviously having a rotation like we have now, that is a competitive advantage that we should not give up willingly unless we get someone really good in return for the offense. Those types of trades, however, are usually few and far in-between, most involve trading youth for experience and making the tradeoff of now versus later, whereas we are looking for a lateral move.
