AAA Sacramento River Cats nipped the Fresno Giants 2-1:

Emmanuel Burriss- 1 for 4, 2B. BA= .290.
Ryan Rohlinger- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .314.
Jesus Guzman- 1 for 4, 2B. BA= .309.

Dan Runzler- 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K. ERA= 3.86.

Monell gets the callup all the way from SJ. Is somebody hurt? He had 1 AB in yesterday's game that I didn't notice. Belt is off to a slow start in AAA.

AA Richmond Flying Squirrels edged the Altoona Curve 5-4:

Brock Bond- 2 for 4, HBP. BA= .231.
Thomas Neal- 2 for 4, 2B(39), HR(12). BA= .294.

Andy Sisco- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.60.

Neal is finishing a fine season strong. Bond played LF in this game while Neal played RF.

High A San Jose Giants defeated the Stockton Ports 7-2:

Ehire Adrianza- 2 for 4, 2B, SF, SB(31). BA= .251.
Francisco Peguero- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .317.

Kyle Woodruff- 6 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.22.

Low A Augusta Greenjackets had the day off.

Short Season Vancouver Canadians beat up on the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 7-1:

Mike Murray- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .353.
Addison Proszek- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 10.38.

Rookie AZL Angels out hit the Giants 9-6:

Gary Brown- 0 for 3, 2 BB. BA- .182.
Brice Cutspec- 2 for 5. BA= .288.
Joe Staley- 1 for 4, HR(5). BA= .250.
Ryan Honeycutt- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(1). BA= .213.
Jake Shadle- 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 7.29.
Andy Altemus- 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 4.87.
Ryan Bean- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 1.47.

Brown has drawn 4 walks in 26 PA's and his OBP is .333. Bean seems to be dominating this level. Staley is hitting for power, but will need to make better contact at higher levels.

DSL Giants were idle due to winning their playoff series in 2 games. They will face the Reds in the championship series starting tomorrow.

  1. Although it is a small sample size, it is good to see Gary Brown working on what was thought to be his greatest weakness. A number of the scouting reports I have read make mention that he is a hard worker and a quick study, so this is a good sign that the Giants' leadoff hitter of the future is coming along nicely, especially given his long layoff due to injury.

  2. Good point, Junkie. Brown was a senior or Junior? Either way, we should be expecting him to by pushing for a cup of coffee by at latest Sept '11, and contend for a full-time spot by mid-late '12. Unless he is Calvin Murray / Adam Hyzdu redo...

  3. It's a bit of a mixed bag for Brownie. On the one hand he drawing walks, which is what everybody said he couldn't do(except OGC who showed he DID draw walks when he had to). On the other hand, he's hitting .182 at about 3 levels lower than he should be. It's all a microscopic sample size though so none of it probably means anything.

  4. Thanks for the plug DrB, I was going to mention that again (junkie and calsnowskier, check out his stats in Baseball Cube, first college season and first Cape Cod season, bad BA but walked to good OBP).

To DrB's point, it is very disappointing that he's hitting so poorly so far given how far up he should be, but that is what I would say, small sample. I would also note his elevated strikeouts too as a poor sign, though again, SSS.

I would also note that he's been out longer than most college guys because he missed a few weeks due to his injury, and I wonder if he's still favoring that injury, is it really healed or just healed enough so that he can play?

So I would mostly take positives out of his performance so far, but with a grain of sale mostly, we won't really be able to assess him until next season, unless he gets to play in AFL and/or maybe Winter League.

I wonder where all those people are who were upset by the Sanchez signing because they wanted to start Brock Bond or thought he was good enough that they didn't want to block his path with the 2-year deal for Sanchez. Well, I see them still complaining, but about other things now...
