DrB's 2026 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #23 Trevor Cohen

23.  Trevor Cohen OF.  DOB:  10/29/20003.  B-L, T-L.  6' 1", 195 lbs.  Rule 5 Eligible Dec. 2028.

2025(College- Rutgers):  .387/.460/.523, 24 2B, 2 HR, 19 SB, 11.0 BB%, 5.5 K%, 273 PA.
2025(A):  .327/.438/.402, 3 2B, HR, 8 SB,  15.4 BB%, 11.5 K%, 130 PA.

Giants 3'rd round draft pick in 2025(their second pick due to signing Willy Adames).  Cohen was so lightly regarded in predraft evaluation MLB Pipeline did not rank him in their top 250 draft prospects despite elite contact numbers at Rutgers.  He is a 3-tool player with Hit, Run, Field but power and arm strength lag.  The main rap on him is an extreme groundball tendency which probably helps his BABIP but leaves him with almost no power.  Can he improve on those without tanking his hit tool?  If he can there may be a MLB career in his future.

  1. I’m a little bummed we couldn’t put together a better package to acquire Freddy Peralta. None of us have a clue what they were asking for but my guess is they wanted Josuar and wouldn’t take Level or Kilen and 2-3 of our top 10 instead of settling for the Mets offer.

I was hoping for a big move this offseason and there have been a few that made sense. There are still moves out there to be made but if this is all Tony V has to work with then I will look forward to a year of developing prospects. We won’t be winning many games so probably good to see what we have in our farm and if any of them can be a part of the future.

My fear is that the future is at least 2-3 years away maybe even with a big move. So maybe it doesn’t make much sense to overspend now or trade prospects with potential. Patience is my mindset even though it is hard not to be frustrated….

Peace and love to you and your family Doc

    1. I have a post coming up about Freddy Peralta so stay tuned for that. In the immortal words of Roger Craig, don't get your dawber down. Where is that Hummbaby spirit? If you are talking about competing directly with the Dodgers, they may be 2-3 years away but I see no reason the Giants can't make the postseason with the team they have right now.

    2. To tack on to your Roger Craig post, Buster and the Giants front office have taken great pains not to criticize or overtly react to anything that the Dodgers do. Also, they try not to blame COVID, the city of San Francisco, the economy, or anything else. The culture is more for each person to improve what they can.

  2. I think players like this can develop into valuable bench players. The problem with such players is that they often have the field and speed tools, but not the hit tool. How many times have the Giants been in a 1-2 outs 2-3 men on and they’ve had to reach for 3 true outcomes or a guy who can play 5 positions but only has wt dreams of ever beating the Mendoza line. A guy with a 350 OBA and a 360 SLG can have a lot of potential when he comes up with the table set.
