Game Wrap 5/4/2025: Giants 9 Rockies 3

Willy Adames had a day at the plate with Logan Webb turning in a signature Quality Start to end the Giants (interrupted) homestand on a high note.  Key Lines:

Mike Yastrzemski RF- 2 for 4, BB, 2 R, 2 RBI.  BA= .283.  YtY drove in 2 runs with a single in the 5'th, advanced to 2B on the throw and scored on Willy Adames double.  He also drew a walk and scored in the Giants 4-run rally in the 7'th inning.  He's been remarkably consistent with a line of .296/.345/.444 over his last 7 games and .283/.387/.491 overall.  And per a discussion in yesterday's comments, he's in his "walk year".

Willy Adames SS- 3 for 5, 2B, 2 HR(4), 2 R, 3 RBI.  BA= .230.  Adames showed signs of heating up for the past couple of weeks but this was a breakout game.  He's always looked like he was having fun out there but he was on cloud 9 today.  Since his BA bottomed out at .185 on 4/18 and before today's game Adames went 13 for 49(.265) so it's not like today's outburst came completely out of the blue.

Lamonte Wade Jr 1B- 2 for 4, RBI.  BA= .141.  The batted balls found some holes today.

Luis Matos LF- 2 for 4, 2B, R.  BA= .196.  Matos PA's have been noticeably better over his last 4 games.

Patrick Bailey C- 2 for 4, 2 R.  BA= .176.  Signs of life from Bailey's bat.

Logan Webb RHP- 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 8/4.  ERA= 2.61.  Webb showed off a new weapon in this game, a letter-high fastball as a strike three pitch.  That may also account for the lower than usual GO/AO.

Spencer Bivens RHP gave up 2 runs in the 8'th inning and Lou Trivino RHP pitched a scoreless 9'th despite giving up 2 hits.(more on him later).

The Win gives the Giants a 3-1 series win against one of the worst teams in MLB so anything less would be disappointing.  Their overall record stands at 22-13.

The Giants head out on a road trip against a hot Cubs team that has a serious lineup so the pitching will be tested.  Landen Roupp RHP tries to finds some command consistency in the first game tomorrow evening against former Giant Matthew Boyd LHP(minor league rehab assigment only).

In a surprise move immediately after the game, the Giants announced that Lou Trivino was DFA'd with Kyle Harrison LHP recalled from AAA Sacramento.  Based on the timing it seems this move must have been in the works before Trivino's 9'th inning appearance today.  It was obvious for a couple of weeks that Trivino had fallen to the bottom of the bullpen depth chart.  Harrison was expected to be part of the Giants rotation on Opening day but his spring ramp up was delayed by an illness.  He's gradually built his strength and velocity in AAA and was absolutely electric with his FB hitting almost 98 MPH in his last start.  Per Alex Pavlovic, Harrison is expected to pitch out of the bullpen for the Giants, at least initially.

In news that may or may not be of interest to Giants fans, the Rangers announced that Offensive Coordinator Donnie Ecker(memba him?) was relieved of his duties and they are re-evaluating their approach to coaching their hitters.

  2. Harrison has only been an SP in Sacramento in 6 appearances. Tomorrow is his 5th day since he pitched 5 innings April 30th.
Why wouldn't they put him in the rotation tomorrow?
Roupp has not been effective and got the 5th SP role because Harrison didn't.
If Harrison starts tomorrow, hopefully, the wind is blowing in...

  3. Keep pushing up the young pitchers, trade (during our after season) Ray & Hicks, maximize funds for Tucker & extending Lee

  4. Adames reverse splits are so profound, he should pretty much always bat between other RHBs

  5. Bivens inherited a 9-1 lead & threw strikes. If he's now the last guy in the pen, that's a fine performance.

  6. It’s very cool that the giants are going with a bullpen of guys who can throw 2-3 innings. Very retro-futuristic and very cool.

  7. According to ActionNetwork.com the wind at Wrigley Field will be blowing almost straight in, knocking down many fly balls.
Given that the Cubs have out-homered SF 52-37, that might help Roupp (he is still slated to start).
Roupp has given up 1 more HR than Boyd in 3 less innings: 1 HR could be the difference.
Giants are 2-8 against LHP — not a good omen.SF is expected to go (Rotowire) with their RH lineup, Lee being the only LHB in his customary #3.
The Cubs are favored — this would be a very nice win!

    1. If Roupp can't get past 5 innings, which seems likely, I would think it's a lock we see Harrison.

    2. If you're going to have a clunker, might as well do it well!
