Game Wrap 5/3/2025: Giants 6 Rockies 3

A grand slam home run by Matt Chapman was the deciding factor in this game.  Key Lines:

Willy Adames SS- 1 for 2, 2 BB, R.  BA= .215.  One of the walks came ahead of Chapman's big blow.  Adames has become more patient and selective as he works his way out of his slow start to the season.

Matt Chapman 3B- 1 for 3, HR(7), BB.  BA= .205.  Chapman follows up his HR from yesterday with another big fly today.  This one drove in 3 runs and put the Giants in a commanding position.  What is the winning percentage for teams with at least one player hitting a grand slam home run?

Luis Matos DH- 1 for 1, HR(2), 2 BB.  BA= 167.  Speaking of better AB's, Matos has looked a lot better the last two games.

Jordan Hicks RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 7 K's, 7/1 GO/AO.  Hicks start was a lot better than the line looks.  He was electric for 5 innings allowing 1 hit in the 5'th inning.  But as we have seen, when Hicks hits the wall it's a hard stop.  There was a lot of bad luck involved though.  He came out for the 6'th and opened with a walk.  Two ground ball singles brought in a run and Melvin went to Randy Rodriguez RHP with no outs and runners at the corners.  A line drive single by Goodman drove in the second run.  Rodriguez then got two outs on a flyball and K, but then longtime Giants nemesis Kyle Farmer hit a sharp comebacker that deflected off Rodriguez and Willy Adames couldn't make a play which drove in the third run.  New RuleJordan Hicks comes out after the first baserunner in any inning after the 5'th.

Camilo Doval RHP, Erik Miller LHP and Ryan Walker RHP pitched scoreless innings with Walker recording his 6'th Save.

The Win improved the Giants record to 21-13.

Logan Webb tried for a third consecutive and series win tomorrow afternoon against German Marquez RHP.

In a note that may or may not be of interest to Giants fans, the D'Backs announced that Corbin Burnes RHP will miss his next start due to shoulder inflammation.

  1. Re: Corbin Burnes, Blake Snell, Carlos Rodon, Tyler Glasnow (just to name a few). Is it possible that pitchers in a contract year will pitch through nagging injuries they are no longer willing to pitch through once the ink is dry on their big deals and their bank accounts plump up? I know there is that in pro football where many interviewed former players have said they were willing to do whatever it took to get the bag in their 2nd contract before finally taking care of lingering injury bugs.

Probably too competitive of guys for that to be true of all of them, and some of the injuries are significant enough they couldn’t hide them or actually pitch through them at all, but it sure does seem to be a growing trend That the big money starting pitchers approaching 30 and beyond get paid and go on the IR rather quickly thereafter…

    1. Well, they are human and we're talking about almost incomprehensible amounts of money. Not sure if someone has done a study on it but it's definitely a widespread belief that players often perform best in their "walk" years. Even if that's not their conscious intent, the subconscious brain is a powerful thing.

    2. "New Rule: Jordan Hicks comes out after the first base runner in any inning after the 5th."
Does long relief start warming up before the 6th inning begins?
Or a quick start guy (?) like Rogers starts playing catch in the bullpen at the beginning of the 6th?
The "rule" is needed but implementing it?

    3. I don't know why you couldn't at least have a bullpen guy on high alert to start the 6'th inning.

    4. Hicks is another guy who could benefit from an opener

  2. I know there was a push for Corbin but I’m very happy the way it worked out. V is the perfect bridge. We have Ray for one more year and he’s pitching the way he was before he got hurt (and traded). Roupp seems like a solid back of the rotation guy, Harrison seems to have found his fast ball in AAA and Birdsong is knocking on the door. We have 5 starters, without Hicks or V. Corbin would have been a road block and financial anchor.

  3. I was at the game yesterday, what a great vibe when Chapman hit the grand slam. Only thing that would have made it even better would have been if Jung Ho Lee's ball had carried over the fence when he was up with the bases loaded. It was a quick game, the fiirst half of the game was only an hour long, as the Giant's had only two hits. Then the fun started and it was downhill for the Giants after the slam. Luis Matos' game was a highlight for me. Maybe he can be a sparkplug that gets the offense rolling. I would like to see him get more consistent ABs now.
On another note, what's up with the SF Chronicle? The Sunday Green Sheet had zero articles about the Giants. No mention of the "day" game yesterday. I get it when late night games don't make it into the paper (although it used to happen), but this was a day game. I only get the Chronicle on Sundays, at this rate I will cancel the paper altogether.

  4. Then only one who did not resign with the Giants; I still miss is Kevin Gausman.

    1. Kevin Gausman's 5 yr/$110 M contract looks like quite a bargain now even if he had a career-ending injury his next start.

    2. We can talk about the "one who got away" rather than the ones who didn't drain the treasury
