Down on the Farm: 5/2/2025

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats edged out the Reno Aces 3-2:

Daniel Johnson RF- 1 for 4, 3B.  BA= .250.
Marco Luciano LF- 0 for 1, 3 BB, SB(2).  BA= .232.
Trevor McDonald RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, 9/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 3.49.
Tristan Beck RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.89.

Daniel Johnson is a lefty swinging......power hitter signed as a minor league free agent. He is from Vallejo, CA and was drafted by the Nationals in round 5 in 2017 out of New Mexico St.  He has a career minor league BA of .267 with 19 HR's/600 PA's.  Trevor McDonald gives the River Cats their third well-pitched start in a row.  Tristan Beck is ready to help out at the MLB level as soon as needed.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels outscored the Somerset Patriots 8-7:

Diego Velasquez 2B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .319.
Carter Howell RF- 1 for 5, HR(2).  BA= .217.
Bryce Eldridge 1B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .300.
Devin Mann DH- 2 for 5, HR(1).  BA= .286.
Jairo Pomares LF- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(5), SB(3).  BA= .258.
Aeverson Arteaga SS- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .207.
Zach Morgan C- 1 for 3, HR(1), BB.  BA= .306.
Nick Morreale RHP- 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 7.84.

A+:  Everett Aquasox defeated the Eugene Emeralds 7-3:

Jonah Cox CF- 2 for 5, SB(13).  BA= .273.
Luke Shliger C- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .233.

A:  San Jose Giants cracked the Modesto Nuts 4-1:

Jakob Christian 1B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .316.
Elian Rayo DH- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .229.
Greg Farone LHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 0.42.
Darien Smith RHP- 3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.80.
Cole Hillier RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.08.

A ball is a conservative placement for the first full season for a player drafted out of college. Greg Farone has not been challenged in 5 appearances.  He appears to be too good for this level and needs a promotion to A+.

Arizona Complex League starts today with several exciting prospects to follow including Rayner Arias OF, Jhonny Level SS, Argenis Cayama RHP, Santiago Camacho C, Jesus Alexander C and Oliver Tejada OF.

  1. Could Beck be another rotation piece for the Giants, or would he likely be used out of the bullpen if called up in the near future?

    1. Tristan Beck and Sean Hjelle seem to be prepped for multi-inning relief roles should circumstances change for Hayden Birdsong and Spencer Bivens.

  2. Promote Rademacher to Richmond, Farone to Eugene. What do you think of Tibbs so far? He seems to have a good bb/k ratio, but lower than expected batting average.

  3. Jury out on Tibbs. It's still early in the season.

    1. Tibbs III second bite of the apple @ Eugene is much, much better than 2024. Ks down to 14%, Ws are up, lower HRs but better SLG, still early, as you said.

  4. Have you any confidence, Doc, that Johnson is going to "break out"?
Possibly he was drafted in 2016, not 2017, as he has some A- ball numbers with the Auburn Doubledays (New York-Pennsylvania League) that year.

    1. Johnson is a L-R mirror image of Jerar Encarnacion. The Giants found both of them tearing up the Mexican League so they must have a scout working that league which is a good thing all by itself. Johnson has kicked around awhile so the odds are against him. I would say if you gave both Jerar and Daniel Johnson 600 PA's at the MLB level they would both probably bat somewhere between .200 and .220 with 30-35% K's and about 20 HR's. Since league-wide hitting seems to have time-travelled back to 1968, that might be an asset to a lot of lineups.

  5. What a May (2 games) for Bryce Eldridge.
Even for this series (4 games): 7-17 to raise his average from .154 to .300, although with 6 Ks.
