Down on the Farm: 5/13/2025

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats defeated the Salt Lake City Bees 5-3.

Tyler Fitzgerald 2B- 1 for 3.  BA= .333.
Casey Schmitt 1B- 1 for 3.  BA= .333.
Grant McCray CF- 2 for 4, SB(8).  BA= .244.
Daniel Johnson RF- 1 for 3, HR(2), BB.  BA= .194.
Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K's, 8/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 3.48.

Tyler Fitzgerald and Casey Schmitt start their rehab assignments but the big news here is Carson Whisenhunt's third consecutive 7-inning Quality Start, this one with no runs allowed which is also his third start of the season in which he has not allowed a run in at least 6 IP. I read a post on BlueSky saying he's really upgraded his breaking ball to round out a 3-pitch mix he will need to be a SP in  MLB.

AA:  Erie Seawolves downed he Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-1.

Diego Velasquez 2B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .292.
Calvin Mitchell RF- 2 for 4.  BA= .182.
Aeverson Arteaga SS- 2 for 4.  BA= .215.
Jack Choate LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 3.07.
Nick Morreale RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, 6/0 GO/AO.  ERA= 7.71.

I continue to be impressed by Diego Velasquez' ability to sustain a near .300 BA in an apparently insanely difficult hitting environment.

A+:  Spokane Indians topped the Eugene Emeralds 3-1.

Quinn McDaniel 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .248.
Shane Rademacher RHP- 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.02.
Brayan Palencia RHP- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 5.59.

A:  San Jose Giants smacked around the Stockton Ports 10-2.

Carlos Gutierrez RF- 4 for 6, HR(1), SB(13).  BA= .345.
Jakob Christian 1B- 3 for 6, HR(5).  BA= .302.
Walker Martin SS- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(5), SF.  BA= .214.
Fernandon Gonzalez C- 2 for 5.  BA= .228.
Hunter Dryden RHP- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 1.37.
Evan Gray RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.16.

Carlos Gutierrez is 16 for 32 in the month of May so far.  Good looking young ballplayer with a great hit tool and speed with power potential.  Walker Martin now has 4 HR, 2 doubles and a triple in his last 5 games.

Rookie ACL:  Giants beat the Guardians 6-1:

Oliver Tejada LF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= 231.
Dario Reynoso 3B- 2 for 3, 3B, BB.  BA= .421.
Ricardo Estrada LHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K's, 5/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 2.57.
Jose Rengel LHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, 4/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 6.23.
Mauricio Estrella RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.93.

  1. Sacramento Team stats among the PCL teams:
Pitching good, near the top in every category
Batting poor, close to the bottom in most categories
So, give them a couple of major league batters (Fitz, Schmitt, and Encarnación) and they win!

  2. So when a SP inevitably goes down this year, who the heck takes it?
Wizz, Birdsong or Harrison? What a problem to have.

    1. Seems like the pecking order is Birdsong, Harrison, Whisenhunt.

    2. It might come down to whether they need a left handed or right handed pitcher.

  3. Undrafted Trent Harris at age 24 underwent something spectacular in his final collegiate season in 2023 before he was signed by the Giants that transformed him from ho-hum to Sensational.
That he's pitched 10 innings in 8 appearances this year with Richmond without allowing a run, is just another improvement: he keeps getting better.
Won't be easy to move him up with the River Cats who already have 19 pitchers although maybe half of them including Winn, Teng, and one of the Carsons (Ragsdale) have been knocked around a bit. Seymour, too, in his last start.
