Game Wrap 4/2/2024: Dodgers 5 Giants 4

Logan Webb couldn't contain the top of the Dodgers lineup and the Giants offense continued to miss opportunities as they failed to take advantage of a Dodgers bullpen game.  Key Lines:

Jorge Soler DH- 2 for 3, HR(1), BB.  BA= .238.  Soler heating up would be a big boost to the Giants offense.

Michael Conforto LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .391.  Conforto stays hot but lined out softly to 2B when he had a chance to get a rally going in the 8'th after a leadoff single by Soler and got picked off to help kill another earlier rally.

Wilmer Flores 1B- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .313.  Wilmer did not show any ill effects of his dive into the Padres dugout Sunday.

Logan Webb RHP- 3.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 6.52.  Webb threw 96 pitches in 3.2 IP.  Just a really rough outing against the toughest first inning lineup in baseball.  It didn't help that Mookie Betts hit a pop fly that landed for a hit to lead off the Dodgers first which led to a 29 pitch inning.

Landon Roupp RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  Nice couple of innings from Roupp who is looking like a keeper.

Taylor Rogers LHP- 0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA- 3.86.  Line doesn't look like much but he managed to get Ohtani to ground out to end a threat in the 6'th.

Ryan Walker RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 1.93.  Walker is an early bright spot too.

Kyle Harrison LHP goes up against Tyler Glasnow RHP trying to stave off a sweep tomorrow evening.

Churn Watch:

The Giants managed to get something back for Joey Bart in a trade with the Pirates.  The haul was Austin Strickland RHP and 8'th round draft pick in 2023 who has yet to appear in a professional game.

Oh, and I hate the Dodgers. They make my physically ill!

  1. Man, that Dodger lineup just wore Webb down to where he lost it against the bottom guys too..He'll be sharper the next game.

ROUPP was on fire. That curve is as good as it gets and he has other pitchers too...Not afraid of anybody and not afraid of throwing the deuce at nay time, any count, any player...Could really help as a starter or, more likely, a reliever after SNELL and COBB come back...And Walker looked like the Walker of last year. So, some good stuff. Bailey looked overmatched at the plate tonight and Ahmed sure doesn't like to take any pitches!

    1. Ahmed did get the Giants first RBI of the game on a line drive single.

    2. Bailey was 4-6 in his 2 games before last night

    3. Really wasn't dissing either player as a whole.... just commenting on Bailey's at bats LAST NIGHT..and I watched AHMED get the single..I have just been surprised by his take no pitches and just swing approach so far....But, hey, if it works....Long season to find out

    4. Ahmed is certainly outplaying his keystone counterpart!

    5. At 9 PM here, the Giants ̶a̶r̶e̶ were trying to make a game of it but look at those averages!
Estrada, YtY, Fitz, Slater, Murphy: 5 Mendozas = offensive futility!

  2. So, the Pirates fleeced the Giants again? Still getting payback for that whole Jason Schmidt/ Don Robinson/ Rock Reuschel deals? I can't wait to see what Bart does in a lineup with Reynolds. 🤔

    1. I think for some of us Joey Bart is a microcosm of a much larger frustration. To see him traded for a low level pitching prospect in the middle of a humiliating series with the Dodgers just rubs salt in that wound. There is also irrational but rational fear of seeing Bart go on a midseason tear with another team while Patrick Bailey gets sent back to AAA for more seasoning.

    2. Agreed, Doc. And the fact that Bart had a pretty solid spring.

  3. Two young pitchers who have been positives are Landon Roupp and Keaton Winn. Both pitched well against the Dodgers and gave them a chance to win. Hopefully they stay healthy all year. Saw something that people are questioning why the Giants signed Tom Murphy. A scout actually preferred joey Bart over Murphy saying he's a better defender and 5 years younger . I like the Bucs as my 2nd favorite team ever since my friend took me to a ballgame there at PNC park, can't beat watching a game at Oracle of course. My friend is not sure what kind of opportunity Bart will get once Yasmani Grandal comes back from IL. They also have a #1 pick Henry Davis. It's a long season and I'm excited to see this Giants team come together.

  4. On an emotional level, I share the group's disappointment at releasing / trading Bart. Perhaps it is fair to say that he hasn't reached the midrange of potential yet, and we all like to root for the guys to get to the best versions of themselves.
Going beyond the emotions, I wonder if there is real world data on when it is possible to tell that a player won't work out (perhaps playing to a 0.0 WAR) and whether there are studies on late bloomers that can give perspective on these decisions. I get the feeling that the Sabermetric guys probably make decisions based on these factors, given the high stakes of 40 man roster and economic decisions.
On another note, have you ever seen a team carry 3 catchers on the 25 man for any length of time?

  5. The Giants easily could have kept Bart and sent Bailey to Sacramento. Perhaps they had a better idea than we fans of Bart vs Bailey.
In that the Giants did not get a "good" trade offer, seems like they are happy with Bailey and younger guys is the system.

  6. Interesting that Ahmet is frequently criticized by contributors to this blog while not a word about his keystone counterpart with an OPS a couple hundred points below his.

  7. Giants seem to have an automatic transmission: no clutch...
