Game Wrap 4/15/2024: Giants 4 Marlins 3

A 3-run rally in the 7'th inning turned a Quality Start by Kyle Harrison into a Win with the bullpen closing it out.  Key Lines:

Jung Hoo Lee CF- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .258.  Lee singled to lead off the game but was CS.  He walked in the 4'th inning and scored the Giants first run of the game.  Then in the 7'th, he singled in the Giants third run but was left stranded at 3B in a bases-loaded, 2-out situation.  So Lee was directly responsible for 2 of the Giants 4 runs and contributed to a third run.

Kyle Harrison LHP- 6 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 2 K, GO/AO= 3/11.  ERA= 4.70.  Kind of an odd pitching line and not one you want to count on to repeat but in this game it was good enough for a QS and a W.

Tyler Rogers RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, GO/AO= 3/1.  Forever Giant Otto Lopez led off the 7'th inning against Rogers by reaching on a throwing error by Nick Ahmed.  That apparently counts as a GO which is how Rogers could accumulate 3 GO's and 1 AO in one inning of work. Other than that, nice job pitching out of the leadoff error.  BTW, Ahmed committed two throwing errors in the game.

Camilo Doval RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 2/0, Save(2).  ERA= 4.50.  Doval had not pitched since April 7. I guess Bob Melvin doesn't believe in using Closers in non-save situations just to keep them loose.

The Win improved the Giants record to 7-10 and cut the Giants deficit to the NL West leading Dodgers to 3 games. The Giants remain in 3'rd place 2 games behind the Padres and 1 game behind the D'Backs. Interestingly enough the Giants and Dodgers have both played .500 ball since the opening series.

Jordan Hicks RHP tries to secure a series win tomorrow facing Ryan Weathers LHP.

  1. One of the errors by Ahmed was a bounced throw that BB9 and probably Wade would have scooped for the out. Flores fumbled the ball.
Another poor play not called an error occurred when Conforto dove for a ball that he had no chance to get, then had to chase it down in left field allowing a runner to score from 1st base.
Another interesting incident happened in the bottom of the 8th with 2 outs when Melvin came out to get Walker. He raised his right arm to get the RH Doval but the lefty Taylor Rogers came out of the bullpen and got most of the way to the mound. Melvin said no, he wanted the RHer. Marlins manager Skip Schumaker went ballistic and got tossed by the infamous Laz Diaz. There was the opinion that Doval was not ready and Taylor went out to give Doval some time.
Also, of interest, Doval was taking his time getting ready to pitch with a 3-2 count and was about to get a delay which would have walked the batter but Chapman called timeout from 3rd base.
    Wow, that was awareness!

  2. Chapman calling time from 3rd base was one of the more heady, under-the-radar moves I can remember in the last few decades. As a spectator, you were just left with "wow, that was out of the ordinary and extremely intelligent!"

  3. harrison has been improving this year as a starter, i'd still like to see that ERA get below 4.50. i think he's done enough for a stay in the rotation as we start getting healthy bodies.

  4. Lee had a really good game. The Ab in the 7th inning he had resulting in the hit to tie the game was very impressive. He fouled off tough pitches against a hard throwing lefthander until getting the hit. He also made some nice throws from the outfield, one reportidly clocked at 94 mph! I can understand why you are bullish on him Doc.

  5. Rookies:
Giants have 6 rookie pitchers in the NL top 23 (innings pitched).
They have 2 in most games started, 1st (Harrison) and 3rd (Winn tied with 5 others)
They have 2 rookie batters in the top 13 (Games). Lee is #1 in most ABs (66), Fitzgerald is #13.

  6. J. D. Davis: 55 PA's slashing .196/.255/.373/.628
Which is slightly better than Chapman
bWAR: Chapman leads 0.6 to 0.0 (it's ALL in dWAR)
Fangraphs: Davis is negative Off/Def/WAR; Chapman is negative Off but positive Def & WAR
    OPS+ Davis leads 86 to 65
Chapman's offense leaves a lot to be desired but he has far more RBI's and 1 more HR (in more ABs) than Davis
    Let's not talk about $$$

  7. Sometimes Melvin almost makes one wish for Kapler.
    Almost,
    For sure, Bochy.
Whether or not Farhan has drafted or traded well, he is heading for 0 for 2 on managers.
