As thin as the Giants were up the middle last season, it is quite possible that Will Wilson was on track for a call up, but 7 games after a promotion to AAA, he suffered a fractured hamate in his left hand and underwent surgery causing him to miss the next 6 weeks. He was left off the Giants 40-man roster and exposed to the Rule 5 draft but not selected. He should start 2023 in Sacramento. The Giants are still way thin up the middle so there is a real possibility of a call up this season a la David Villar last year. The problem for Wilson is he might not have quite the range and arm to play SS in the major leagues and may not quite have enough bat for a lesser defensive position.
Not the Star hoped for but he might be an able utility player – too bad he doesn't bat LH.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of RH extras, what is signing Stephen Piscotty about? To back up Pederson as DH against LHP? As difficult as it seems to be, Piscotty is an even worse fielder than Joc so no outfield help. He's a little better than Slater offensively, especially power, but not defensively.
Could be a trade chip if he has a positive Spring and that's always appealing to the the Giants Trade Master...
Well, never really had a profile of a star, a guy with decent tools across the board but nothing that stood out. The ceiling was like a regular starter. Now the hope is as an utility guy who can back up SS.
DeleteWhy can't he play 2nd base? Not as much range or bat required. La Stella is gone. As good as any position for Wilson.
ReplyDeleteHe profiles best at 2B. Doubtful that he can outhit Thairo though so Wilson will have to prove himself as a utility guy for now.
