Preseason Update: Another Lefty Shines

The Giants have an intriguing stable of lefthanded pitchers in camp who could find roles on an expanded roster.  Drew Smyly, Andrew Suarez and Conner Menez have had strong multi-inning outings so far.  Now add in the name Caleb Baragar to the mix.  He struck out 3 batters and allowed just one hit in 2 IP.  YtY, who was one of his strikeout victims, said "The ball explodes out of his hand."   Baragar has been quietly working his way up the organizational ladder.  He's a big lefty at 6'3", 215 lbs who spent the bulk of last year as a SP at AA and pitched to a 3.45 ERA over 120 IP.  Maybe his FB gains a couple of ticks in shorter outings?

Hunter Pence and Wilmer Flores homered in the intrasquad game.

Joey Bart threw out Will Wilson trying to steal 2B.

Now the bad news:  Evan Longoria is out with an oblique strain and could miss Opening Day.  The good news?  If Longoria is out, it opens an opportunity for one of many Giants infielders in camp.

The Padres made another inneresting trade sending Franchy Cordero OF and a pitching prospect to the Royals for Tim Hill LHP.   A couple of years ago, the Padres had a whole bunch of very promising young OF's breaking into the major leagues.  Since then, they have sent out Manuel Margot, Franmil Reyes, Travis Jankowski, Jose Pirela, Hunter Renfroe and now Cordero.  Their starting OF now consists of Tommy Pham, Trent Grisham and Wil Myers with Josh Naylor as a fourth OF with Taylor Trammell still in the minors.  That's it!  All the others are gone, gone, gone! Very strange!

  1. Caleb Baragar has put himself in the right place at the right time!
The 275th pick in the 2016 amateur draft signed for $20,000 and worked his way to Sacramento last year for an inauspicious start before being, perhaps, the "only man standing" to start and win the final game of the Triple-A National Championship.
Is he to be a pleasant surprise or just a flash in the pan?
Great to see the new faces, in with the new!
