Spring Training Game Wrap 2/27/2019: Giants 15 Royals 2

The Giants did lots of good things on the field today in a lopsided win over the Royals in Scottsdale.  Key Lines:

Gerardo Parra LF- 2 for 2, 2B, HR(1), HBP, SB(1).  BA= .333.  I wasn't a big fan of the Giants signing Parra, but maybe he's better than the shiny new toys Farhan Zaidi found in the dumpster?

John Andreoli LF- 1 for 2.  BA= .667.  Amdreoli is 2 for 3 on the spring with 2 BB's for an OBP of .800.  His hit today came in a 9-run 9'th inning with a bases-loaded single to drive in 2 then came home on a triple by Breyvic Valera.

Yangervis Solarte, 2B.  2 for 3, 3B.  BA= 500.  I've always liked Yangervis Solarte a lot, in no small part for his name which I would grade as at least a 60.  Gotta say, as much as I liked Alen Hanson last year, Solarte is almost certainly an upgrade despite his down year with Toronto last season.

Evan Longoria 3B- 1 for 1, HR(1), SF.  BA= .750.  Longoria is acting like he has something to prove.

Breyvic Valera 3B- 1 for 3, 3B.  BA= .375.  Valera could give Solarte a battle, but I tend to think Solarte has the inside track.

Chris Shaw PH/DH- 1 for 2, HR(1).  BA= .250.  Shaw hit the first of 3 consecutive dingers for the Giants in the 9'th inning blowout rally.  On the video, he looks slimmer than I remember him.

Joey Bart C- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .571.  Bart led off the big 9'th with a loud double then hit the second round tripper of the B2B2B sequence. Woo Hoo!!!  I wonder if he could get assigned to AA out of spring training?

Zach Green 1B- 2 for 3, HR(1).  BA= .429.  Green had the last of the 3 dingers in the 9'th inning run.

Mike Gerber CF- 2 for 2.  BA= .667.  Gerber has been playing some CF in Steven Duggar's absence and making the most of the opportunity.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.  Shark reportedly hit 94 MPH on the FB and showed a sharp slider.  He pitched like he has something to prove.

Andrew Suarez LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.  Solid spring debut for Suarez who may find himself in Sacramento to start the season due to options.

Brandon Belt has missed 3 games with an illness, because of course he has!  He is scheduled to play tomorrow against the BrewCrew in Phoenix.  Chris Stratton gets his second spring start which Ty Blach and Melvin Adon are also scheduled to pitch.

Still waiting for Bryce.  The Giants may actually be in this thing for real if MLBTR is to be believed. The Larry Baer went beck to Las Vegas to try for deal and the Giants are reportedly now fully invested in a 10 year deal for at least $300 M.  Bryce seems to really, really not want to go to Philly and the Dodgers are still rumored to be only interested in a shorter term deal.  Come on, Larry, prove me wrong and get this done!

  1. Per Harper, if they sign him, make it on their terms, not his. Ten years? No way. Five, tops. Let's not make this another Barry situation, where the team ended up being Bonds and whoever he wanted management to get. And they ended up winning NOTHING. This current team has pedigree. 3 in 5 wasn't that long ago. If they give this team to him, I'm going to be ticked.

    1. What you are really saying is you don't want them to sign Bryce Harper, because he's not going to sign a 5 year contract.

    2. I don't want them to be locked up in a contract for 10 years for Barry 2.0 Again, they won nothing with Bonds. I don't think Harper is good enough to carry this team. I'd much rather have a healthy Crawford, panik, belt, and posey than Harper.

    3. Looking at this from ownership's point of view, they may not have won championships with Bonds but he was very good for the team's bottom line. I have no doubt Bonds played a big role in helping the Giants get Oracle Park built. I would rather invest long term in a position player with power than a pitcher, especially in Oracle Park. I hope the ownership can get this done.

    4. If a healthy Crawford, Panik, Belt, and Posey could be bought with money, the preferences of CDH would be relevant—the team could use funds that would have gone to Harper to . . . what? Fly a crackerjack Mayo team to Willie Mays Plaza for each home game? Zaidi is trying to build depth so that when Crawford et al. crumple, the team can play good ball and also not have to rush the injured man back prematurely. Getting Harper is part of that effort, not its alternative.

Also, to say that the Giants never won anything with Bonds is absurd, isn’t it? They didn’t win a World Series with him; but we know, or ought to know, on what small accidents the winning of a WS turns. They got into WSs with Bonds and because of him, and they won a great number of games with and because of him.

    5. Everything moot! Harper’s a Phillie for thirteen years!

  2. Maybe the Giants are offering a 10 year contract, front loaded, with a option after 5 years. Harper would still be young after 5 years. His contract beats Machado's. He seems like he doesn't want go to Philly. More money guaranteed up front. I actually would like the Giants to sign him to something like this. Giants get him, and just importantly, the Doh-yers don't. Just as Kershaw is seeming to falling apart.

  3. Worry about an aging vet when he’s an aging vet. Get Harper.

I hope Bart goes to A+ so we can see him in some Rancho/Lancaster/IE games.

  4. And yes, if it must be a ten year deal, in my opinion, he can keep it and continue asking, "where's my ring"

  5. Nice power display by Bart and Shaw - totally legit power bats. I'd like to see Bart on fast track to the bigs and Shaw and Mac are again legit end elite power bats in the organization. Maybe the organization can find a way to get Mac healthy and to further develop Shaw and Bart because it has been years since they produced a home grown deep threat. Suarez was bright spot on 2018 team - hope he makes the Big Club.

  6. OT: Howe is pence doing so far this ST? I see he is not in the line-up today as starter. Would love to see his stat line this Spring if anyone has it.

  7. Nothing to worry about any more, Harper to Phillies for $330M, was just reported on mlb.com. Is Parra gaining the inside track for RF? Can Solarte play LF? Or is there a trade that has been sitting on Zaidi's desk waiting for this Harper thing to finish?

    1. Good for BH. Enjoy Philly! Now maybe we get to see a home grown (not groan) outfield. Duggar, Mac, and Slater or Shaw.
